Van Dijk future still uncertain

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk will tomorrow step out at Anfield for the first time since his summer transfer saga with manager Mauricio Pellegrino admitting he is unsure over the long-term future of his star centre half.

Van Dijk spent most of the summer trying to force a move to Liverpool, but was unsuccessful as Saints held firm.

There is speculation that the Reds will be back in for van Dijk during the January transfer window, and that this time they could land their man.

Pellegrino admitted that if they were prepared to cough up enough money then he could not rule out van Dijk moving, and insisted it would not be his decision over whether to sell.

He said: “You never know because the market when we talk about money everybody has got a price.

“The budget to sign players, the biggest teams have got money to try to sign players.

“I can’t decide about that. This is a question for our owners.”

He added: “I don’t know, I can’t control the market.

“I cannot control the whisper about my player because we have got a lot of good players, and most of the teams want to sign them.

“The majority of the teams in Europe want to try to improve their squad and the market is huge now around the world, and information is enormous right now.

“We can’t control this and we have to be focussed.

“Right now Virgil is thinking about us but a lot of players are thinking about other clubs, we are thinking about maybe other players to try and bring here next year.

“Everybody is focussed on their area to try to bring the best players possible for our club. It is something that happens every single transfer window.”

Liverpool’s summer pursuit of van Dijk attracted a lot of headlines, as well as some criticism after they apologised following accusations of tapping up.

Van Dijk’s transfer request also made things difficult, but the 26-year-old is now back playing regularly for Saints.

“He is training well and thinking about the club,” insisted Pellegrino.

“We can’t control the market and the whisper. We talk about something we can control.

“As a manager and people in this club we have a lot of players who are important, a lot of clubs in the world want players from our club.

“Virgil is one of this but we have to focussed on our job.”

Emotional Anfield return for Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is relishing an emotional return to Anfield.

The Saints boss is a former Liverpool player and assistant manager, and tomorrow leads a team to his former home for the first time as a boss in his own right.

Pellegrino played 13 times for the Reds in 2005 and returned to Liverpool in 2008 to work on the coaching staff under Rafa Benitez.

Pellegrino has many happy memories of Liverpool, both the club and the city, and is excited about a return.

He smiled: “It will be really, really special, and not just about football because I had been living there with my family, my children in the school, in the streets.

“It’s not just about football, it’s about the people and I have got good memories, I know the people that is working there. My only words is to be grateful.

“As a first experience in my life in England first of all as a player I think it was really good.

“I had good memories from this moment because we won the Champions League and I was in this group.

“After as a coach it was my first experience also to be in contact with professional players with Rafa Bentiez, and I can say I am really grateful for those days, for those times.”

Pellegrino is taking his first steps into English football management with Saints, and insists he isn’t dreaming of one day returning to Anfield as the club’s manager.

“In football I don’t think about tomorrow, I think about today,” he insisted.

“I don’t like to do any plans.

“I did plan when I was a player and always I failed because football is like life and in one moment everything changes.

“I leave the reality in football. Football has a lot of risks. It is really nice this profession but I think about every day.”

Pellegrino is about to pit his wits against some of the best managers in the world.

Over the next month or so he will come up against Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger, Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

It is a big challenge for him but one he is excited for.

“To be in the Premier League is a nice inspiration,” he said.

“To be with these players to try to be better every single day and to try to give ideas to be better every day is an inspiration.

“My career is an inspiration because you never can be calm, can be quiet, because it is a profession you never finish and have to be ready all the time. To play against the biggest teams representing Southampton for me is amazing.”

Pellegrino optimstic ahead of Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is refusing to be distracted by the prospect of a daunting run of fixtures, and believes Saints might have the style to get it off to a flying start at Liverpool.

Saints have to play all of the Premier League’s top six before the end of the year, with five of those matches away from home.

It all begins tomorrow with a trip to Anfield. Saints went unbeaten in four games against Liverpool last season, and Pellegrino feels the Reds are a good match-up for his side’s strengths and style of play.

“Maybe Southampton and Liverpool are teams with similar characteristics,” he reflected.

“We are comfortable when we are managing the ball, when we are higher, when we are in the opposite half.

“I know that it will be really difficult because at Anfield the people are pushing all the time and they will be trying to press high up.

“It will be an opportunity for us to show how we can play this game and maybe with more space maybe it will be easier for us. We never know.

“I know it will be difficult but it is an opportunity to show again if we can do the same away as at home.”

Saints have played seven of their 11 Premier League matches at St Mary’s this season, and have struggled to get the results they desired in a number of winnable looking fixtures.

With Saints fans starting to voice their displeasure at the way things are going the players could be forgiven for feeling relieved at getting some more time on the road.

They will also have another pressure release valve by virtue of the fact they will be underdogs for many of their upcoming matches, rather than heavy favourites expected to win and to attack.

However, Pellegrino was not so sure.

“I don’t think we feel pressure at home,” he said.

“At the end when the game finishes if the people are not happy it is normal at every single pitch.

“I feel more comfortable at home than away because our fan is supporting us.

“Most of the games we play better at home than away but you can’t control the result.

“I would like to play in every single pitch the same way. Sometimes you can’t do it but this is our goal.”

Many fans are talking about the next ten games which run up until the turn of the year as a complete package, and a taxing one at that, but Pellegrino is trying to keep his side only looking at the next one.

“We have to be focussed on what we have to do as a team, during the training sessions, in the game, in every position, because when we think about the big picture, the big match or big names, you sometimes lose your focus on what you have to done the pitch.

“If you think it’s a really big game you are not focussed too much and you have to keep your feet on the floor and be focussed there.”

Liverpool expected XI: Who will make Jurgen Klopp’s 4-3-3 to face Southampton?

Show/hide article…

LIVERPOOL take on Southampton tomorrow, but who will make the line-up?

The Reds host the Saints at Anfield in their first match since the international break, and will hope to pick up where they left off two weeks ago by beating West Ham 4-1.

Nathaniel Clyne’s injury-enforced absence now looks set to go on until at least February after back surgery, but Adam Lallana is now close to a return and might even make the bench.

Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane are slight doubts for the game too, with the former having missed England’s friendlies and the latter having returned from Senegal duty early after tweaking his hamstring.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are 12 points behind leaders Manchester City but just three off Chelsea in fourth.

Liverpool fans contact Virgil van Dijk ahead of weekend clash

Show/hide article…

It was the great “what if?” of the summer transfer window, but in the end Liverpool were unable to get their hands on Virgil van Dijk .

The Dutchman was seen as the answer to Jurgen Klopp’s defensive problems, but with Southampton seemingly growing sick of the talent drain from St Mary’s to Anfield in recent years, the Saints put a block on his move.

Van Dijk refused to train with his teammates as he tried to force through a move away, but in the end he didn’t get want he wanted and didn’t head to Merseyside.

Until Saturday, that is.

Because - as the transfer rumour has resurfaced ahead of the January window - he’ll be in the Southampton side to face Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend.

And Reds fans have been tweeting him ahead of the weekend, with a few specific requests in there, including “let us score” and “score an own goal please”.

Will he read the tweets and help his wannabe employers out?

Almost certainly not, no.

Reliance on Southampton players an indictment of Liverpool transfer policy

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is the perfect symbol of Liverpool’s flawed transfer policy. The Southampton defender should be wearing red when the teams meet in front of the Kop on Saturday. That he is appearing for the away side is a serious indictment of Anfield’s summer window.

Throughout the past three years, Liverpool have had an unhealthy reliance on buying from Southampton. The Merseyside club have returned to St Mary’s again and again to pad their squad. It is a little surprising. The production line has hardly been an unqualified success.

Sadio Mane has probably been the best of the crop from the South Coast, but Adam Lallana’s impact has been impressive. Nathaniel Clyne was relatively inexpensive, but has not quite lived up to his potential. Rickie Lambert’s “dream move” ended with the 30-something striker sleepwalking through a single season on the periphery of the squad and Dejan Lovren’s career at Anfield is still unfolding in nightmarish fashion.

Even the latest acquisition, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, began his career at St Mary’s. Liverpool were interested enough in 2011 to ask to be kept informed about his status if Southampton were inclined to sell the 17-year-old. The South Coast club duly made the call when the teenager was available, but received no response from Anfield. Oxlade-Chamberlain then moved to Arsenal for £12 million. Liverpool finally got their man this summer, spending £40 million on the 24-year-old who was struggling to get into Arsene Wenger’s side. Oxlade-Chamberlain has started one Premier League match for his new club so far.

Much of this business took place before Klopp’s arrival in England. Only Mane has made the direct journey during the German’s time in charge. Van Dijk will probably join him soon. Even if the Dutchman does not make his way to Anfield, more than a quarter of the players for whom Liverpool have paid fees since 2014 have come directly from Southampton.

Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, admire the way they do things at St Mary’s. FSG wanted to develop a similar system where they bought or developed young players, improved them and increased their sell-on value. Cashing in on players is not the primary ambition at Anfield. Trophies remain the target for the owners. Unfortunately they have been unable to win silverware or create a successful recruitment policy.

One of the biggest indictments against Michael Edwards, the sporting director who oversees Liverpool’s player acquisition, is his dependence on Southampton. This, coupled with the inability to build a coherent defence, throws up question marks about the way things are done on Merseyside.

Liverpool have the financial muscle to compete with all but Europe’s richest clubs. Going back to the same well repeatedly suggests a failure of scouting as well as a lack of imagination.

Klopp has the chance to change this. The 50-year-old is critical to Liverpool’s direction in the next five years – he is under contract until 2022 – and that makes his health scare this week extremely worrying. The club needs him fit and firing and able to shift the emphasis of the recruitment strategy to bring in players who suit his style.

So far, Klopp has been steadfastly supportive of the transfer dealings, but there are concerns in the German’s camp that progression on the pitch has not been fast enough. There is an awareness that the mood of the supporters is on a knife’s edge. A series of poor results would create an unhealthy mood in the stands.

When Liverpool’s attack is at their seductive best, some of the problems in midfield, defence and the goalkeeping position are easily overlooked. This happened at the beginning of last season and raised ambitions. When the forward line are not sparking, the deficiencies in other areas come under the spotlight. More than two years into Klopp’s tenure, fourth place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification remains the ceiling for expectations.

Edwards keeps an extremely low profile and the manager is the lightning rod for criticism about signings. Brendan Rodgers took flak for poor performance in the transfer market and some of the criticism was undeserved. There are times in Anfield’s recent history when the requirements of the manager have not been paramount when buying players. It is a trap Klopp needs to avoid.

Southampton’s system of buying cheap and then selling for a profit appears to be running out of steam. This season, under Mauricio Pellegrino – who was briefly a Liverpool centre-back himself – they have struggled to score goals. Their three league victories have come against sides in the bottom five. This could be a season in which they get sucked into the relegation fight.

Van Dijk will get to show how good he is in front of the Kop. The 26-year-old’s performances for Southampton this season have done little to suggest that he will be the man to solve Klopp’s defensive woes. Liverpool might have to get much more creative in the transfer market to solve their untrustworthy back line.

In the short term, Klopp will aim for the sort of straightforward victory over Southampton that will give him a boost after a difficult week. Further down the line, the German will look forward to a time when playing the South Coast club no longer throws up a multitude of questions about Liverpool’s recruitment policy. After each disappointing window, the pressure builds for everyone at Anfield.
