Every Premier League club ranked by number of set piece goals conceded in the 2017/18 season

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are truly a joy to behold this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side just keep winning in both domestic and European football, and they sit eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after 12 matches.

And, incredibly, they are the only top flight side to have achieved a remarkable feat in the 2017/18 campaign.

Of all 20 Premier League teams, only City have yet to concede a goal from a set piece - with all six of the goals they have let in coming from open play.

But where do all the other teams rank in terms of goals conceded from set pieces so far? Click the right arrow, above, to find out…

Five memorable Southampton v Everton matches

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton and Everton meet for the 97th time in all competitions on Sunday. We look at some notable clashes.

Striker Graziano Pelle scored his 11th goal of the season as Ronald Koeman’s depleted Southampton side put on a commanding display to end a run of five league games without a win.

Everton went behind after Romelu Lukaku headed into his own net in the first half and Pelle doubled Southampton’s lead with a shot from close range before Maya Yoshida added a third to dent the Merseysiders’ chances of finishing in the top four.

Southampton, who made a strong start to the campaign despite losing manager Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur and several players in the close season, went on to finish seventh, four places above Everton.

The lightning-quick Jimmy Settle scored a blistering hat-trick as Everton thumped Southampton at Goodison Park to storm into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Despite their barnstorming win over the Saints, Everton ran out of steam in the last four, exiting to eventual Cup winners Aston Villa, initially drawing 1-1 before losing the replay 2-1.

Settle, who cost Everton 400 pounds ($530) from Bury in 1899, helped the club to their first FA Cup the next year, when Sandy Young struck to seal a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Southampton caretaker manager Steve Wigley’s first game in charge following Gordon Strachan’s sacking would have ended in defeat but for midfielder Fabrice Fernandes’s added-time equaliser in a dramatic finale.

Trailing 3-1 after two goals by 18-year-old Wayne Rooney and a Duncan Ferguson strike, Southampton scored twice in the final eight minutes to deny the Merseysiders a first win of the year.

“The first half was shocking and it was a good job I could not be replaced as manager there and then because I was ready to go,” Wigley said.

Everton ended the season just above the relegation places and Rooney joined Manchester United in August.

Two headed own goals by Everton in the first half helped mid-table Southampton to a victory that ended the Merseyside club’s chances of overtaking fourth-placed Arsenal for a Champions League spot.

Everton went behind in the first minute when defender Antolin Alcaraz guided Rickie Lambert’s cross from the left into his own net before his defensive partner Seamus Coleman joined him on the wrong side of the scoresheet.

Victory helped Southampton equal their best points tally (52) in a 38-game season with two games to spare, and Mauricio Pochettino’s men eventually finished with 56 points, three places below fifth-placed Everton.

Wales centre forward Ron Davies tapped home a last-minute winner as Southampton beat Everton in a five-goal thriller at The Dell for their first victory in three months.

Striker Joe Royle put the visitors in front on the stroke of halftime before Southampton levelled through forward Frank Saul’s left-foot drive a minute later.

Alan Ball restored Everton’s lead but Saints midfielder Jimmy Gabriel headed in John Sydenham’s free-kick to make it 2-2 before Davies got the decisive goal in front of over 25,000 fans.

Southampton finished the season in 16th place while Everton were fifth.

Lambert insists it’s no time to panic over Saints’ form

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Rickie Lambert insists that now is not the time to panic about the club’s poor form – and believes it’s a “matter of time” before Mauricio Pellegrio’s men climb up the Premier League.

The 35-year-old, who netted 117 goals in 235 appearances for Saints, keeps track of the team’s progress and is sure they’ll end a woeful recent run, which has seen them win just one in seven matches.

“I’ve heard from a few of the players and everyone inside the building understands it’s not quite going well exactly,” said the former England striker, who retired back in October. “But it’s not far off.

“It’s the first time in a few years there’s been a little dip. It’s not anything to worry about. It’s only a matter of time before this group of players are climbing back up the league.

“But you can’t forget how fierce the competition is in the Premier League. Sooner or later you’re not going to be constantly going up. Eventually you’ll have a little dip.

“The players are on it now and the manager too. Everyone involved I can see they are going to start climbing the league.”

Lambert, who left Saints for boyhood heroes Liverpool in 2014 after a sensational stay at St Mary’s – which included double promotions from League One to Premier League, has urged calm about the way the season is going.

“That’s got to be there from the get-go anyway and I’m sure it is there,” he said, when asked if the team need to fight and pull together now. “If you’re not quite on it you get punished.

“You might not be a million miles away, you might just be able to tweak it here and there and you can see the results change.

“But I don’t think its anything to panic about. Not quite now anyway and I think they are all together.

“From speaking to a few players it’s a good bunch of lads and you’ve just got to be patient with the team. I’m sure they’ll turn it around.”

He added: “I’ve been there myself. Sometimes it’s a performance when you’re losing 2-0 or 3-0 and you come back and draw or you win it, or you’re playing against one of the big boys who you’re not expected to win against and you beat them 2-0 or 3-0.

“That gets you going again and you go on a run. We did it the first season when I was at Saints. We were struggling and then you win three games on the bounce and you go up four or five places and it is soon forgotten about.

“It’s obviously what everyone is hoping for here. As long as you’re believing in what you’re doing it will turn and I’m sure it will.”

Watch out for the Daily Echo’s interview with Lambert about his plans for his retirement soon.

Pellegrino needs a lift in crunch Everton clash

Show/hide article…

LONDON (Reuters) - When Mauricio Pellegrino was hired to help Southampton take the “next steps” after four consecutive top-eight finishes in the Premier League, the fans did not expect them to be backwards ones.

Twelve games into the Argentine’s first season, however, they might be scratching their heads wondering about the logic of sacking Claude Puel under who they finished eighth last season and reached the final of the League Cup.

Three matches without a victory and one win in seven means they have their lowest points total after 12 games since the 2012-13 campaign when they were coming to terms with being back in the top flight after a seven-year absence.

Rumblings of discontent can already be heard meaning Saturday’s home clash with Everton takes on even greater significance for former Liverpool player Pellegrino and his struggle win over followers of the south coast club.

Southampton, 14th with 13 points, are only one point worse off than this time last year under Puel, but considering European qualification was touted as a realistic aim this time, it is not where they expected to be.

With trips to Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United before the end of the year, they are in danger of being dragged towards the relegation places.

What is more, the players’ attitude was questioned in last week’s listless 3-0 defeat by Liverpool.

”We need to be upset. If you are not upset then something is wrong,“ defender Cedric Soares said. ”You want to climb out of the hole and come back to winning ways.

“Every team has difficult moments during a season and it’s in these moments you need to come together and fight for it.”

Pellegrino, who took Alaves to ninth in La Liga last season and to the Copa del Rey final – almost mirroring Puel’s season at St Mary’s – will only need to look around the other clubs in the lower half to know how precarious his tenure could be.

Everton, a point and two places below Southampton, have already pressed the ejector button this season – sacking Ronald Koeman after a dreadful start saw them in the bottom three.

Caretaker manager David Unsworth is likely to still be in charge on Saturday, although the silence over his prospects of taking over on a full-time basis is deafening.

Watford’s Marco Silva has been continually linked with tel job and refused to rule himself out of the running on Thursday.

Yet Unsworth has sparked something of a revival of sorts in Everton over last two games. They came back from 2-0 down to beat Watford 3-2, then drew 2-2 with bottom club Crystal Palace.

Former Everton winger Andrei Kanchelskis believes Unsworth, who stepped up from coaching the under 23s, should be given the chance to steady the Goodison Park ship.

”If a new coach comes in he needs time to look at the players and some coaches come in and say ‘I don’t want this player, I want to buy a new player’ which will be extra money.

“For me Everton should keep these on until the end of the season and after see what happens,” he told Sky Sports.

Everton have lost on three of their last four visits to St Mary’s and are without a win in their last six away games.

They also suffered a blow this week when Senegal striker Oumar Niasse who was handed a two-game ban for “deceiving a match official” by diving to win a penalty against Palace.

Lambert confident Southampton’s fortunes will change

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton are suffering a blip in form but former striker Rickie Lambert believes it will be only a matter of time before Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad improve in the Premier League.

Ahead of Sunday’s league visit of Everton, Southampton are 14th on the table with just one victory in eight matches.

Lambert, who netted 117 goals in 235 appearances for Southampton, defended the club’s recent performances and said it has become increasingly difficult for Premier League clubs to produce a string of positive results.

“You can’t forget how fierce the competition is in the Premier League. Sooner or later you’re not going to be constantly going up. Eventually you’ll have a little dip,” the former England striker told the Daily Echo.

“The players are on it now and the manager too. Everyone involved can see they are going to start climbing the league.”

“You might not be a million miles away, you might just be able to tweak it here and there and you can see the results change.”

Lambert reckons the team need a fighting performance to kickstart their campaign as they face a busy run of fixtures which will pit them against nine top-flight opponents before the end of the calendar year.

“Sometimes it’s a performance when you’re losing 2-0 or 3-0 and you come back and draw or you win it, or you’re playing against one of the big boys and you beat them 2-0 or 3-0,” he added.

“That gets you going again and you go on a run. As long as you’re believing in what you’re doing it will turn and I‘m sure it will.”
