Saints support World Pancreatic Cancer Day

Show/hide article…

Southampton Football Club is proud to be supporting World Pancreatic Cancer Day on Thursday 16th November.

Through Kelvin Davis’ heavy involvement with the Liver & Pancreatic Research and Development Cancer Charity, Saints are helping to raise further awareness of a cause close to the former goalkeeper’s heart.

Kelvin is patron and chairman of the Liver & Pancreatic Research and Development Cancer Charity, having got to know its founder, Mo Abu Hilal, who performed emergency appendix surgery on his wife, Kelly, in 2014.

The goalkeeper’s testimonial last year also raised vital funds for the Southampton-based charity, and now the club is showing further support for an important cause.

Throughout the week, the Ted Bates statue at St Mary’s has been lit a violet hue – the colour of the charity – to mark World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

Liver and Pancreatic Cancer affects more than 15,000 patients in the UK every year. There is still a scarcity of funds dedicated to research to improve early detection and survival rates, which are not improving.

“We want people to find out more about the disease and how we can raise funds to fight back,” Kelvin said.

“The purple lighting can help to spread awareness of the underfunding of this particular cancer and what it’s capable of.

“Hopefully we can reverse some of the statistics that are out there at the moment, which aren’t particularly good and haven’t improved over the last 40 years.

“It’s something I’ve thrown myself into to do as much as I can.”

Visit facebook.com/LAPRANDD to find out more about the charity’s work.

Leicester eyeing audacious move for PSG star as boss Claude Puel admits interest

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has claimed he would have loved to have had a Matt Le Tissier at Southampton last season to play more entertaining football - and he admitted his interest in bringing playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa to Leicester.

The Frenchman was sacked by the Saints despite taking them to the League Cup final and finishing eighth. Club legend claimed Puel had played “boring football”.

Now manager at Leicester, Puel said: “Le Tissier is one of the ex-Southampton players who still works for Southampton so, fine.

"That said, I would have really loved to have in my squad a player like him last season. Le Tissier was a fantastic player, a creator who really felt football.”

Former Newcastle and Hull midfielder Ben Arfa played for Puel at Nice in 2015/16 – and scored 17 goals - but has now been frozen out at PSG this season.

The Foxes coach said: “I want first to get to know the potential of my squad and see what I can discover. If it is necessary to make adjustments, we will see if it is possible.”

In an interview with L’Equipe today, Puel blamed the sale of Southampton to Chinese investors in the summer for his dismissal.

“There was not injustice,” he said. “In England there are owners who come from all corners and some are impatient.

"Southampton was living a particular moment, the club was in the process of being sold to the Chinese, it was unstable. That can explain certain things.”

Puel revealed he took up golf during his summer off back hoe in Monaco before replacing Craig Shakespeare at Leicester last month – and working with more foreign owners.

And the told the story of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha sending a helicopter to pick him up a for dinner date.

“It was the day after my signature,” Puel recalled. “A helicopter in the club colours came and took me from the training ground, from the grass, and we flew to London where I had a meeting with him in a big restaurant.

"I flew over England for 35 minutes. We passed over Wembley and the great London monuments and we landed next to the Thames. It was crazy – really nice.”

Puel signed a contract at the King Power Stadium until 2020. But he said: “I do not look that far ahead, I know that can stop very quickly, for me and for better known coaches.

"The Premier Leaue is very demanding. But if I manage to perform with this team, and give it an identity of play as I see it and get closer to the big teams, then it will work.”

Leicester face Manchester City on Saturday. “With Paris, City is the other team which is dominating Europe today. Their quality of play is incredible. Guardiola has found cruising speed.

"They have gained in confidence, they are in control and have mastery of their opponents. And the addition of a very technical goalkeeper (Ederson) has done them good.

"It is almost a pity to play them so quickly with so little work together. It is a challenge.”

Asked if a win against the Premier League leaders would make him untouchable, Puel responded: “Yes, for two matches.”

‘Liverpool given green light for fresh Virgil van Dijk bid’

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp has been given the green light to make a new bid for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk .

Liverpool were forced to make an apology to Saints after their failed attempt to sign the £70million-rated Dutch centre-back in the summer.

But Anfield boss Klopp will get a close up view of the player he still believes can help solve his defensive problems as he will be in the dug-out for the home game against Southampton on Saturday after recovering from his midweek health scare.

Saints’ first-year boss Mauricio Pellegrino admitted on Thursday he could not guarantee Van Dijk will still be at the club when the January transfer window closes.

He said: “I don’t know. I can’t control the market.

“You never know, because when we talk about money everybody has got a price.

“The budget is to sign players and the biggest teams have got money to try to sign players.

“I can’t decide about that. This is a question for our owners.

“Everybody is focused on their area, to try to bring the best players possible for their club. It is something that happens every single transfer window.

“We have got a lot of good players and most of the teams want to sign them.”

Liverpool had to apologise over the summer for making what was deemed an illegal approach when they tried to sign Van Dijk in a long-running transfer saga that saw the Netherlands international request a move and then be banished from first-team training.

Klopp took charge of training at Melwood on Thursday afternoon following the previous day’s trip to hospital for tests after he complained of feeling ill.

Everything you need to know for Liverpool vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Liverpool take on Southampton this Saturday at Anfield with both teams in need of a result for different reasons.

Jurgen Klopp’s side arrive in form having won all three games since that 4-1 humbling by Tottenham at Wembley, scoring 10 goals in the process, and are desperate to keep up the pressure on the top four.

The Saints have picked up only one point from their past two games but Mauricio Pellegrino is confident he can bring an upturn in results and Anfield would be as good a place as any to make a statement of intent.

Sadio Mane returned to training this week and is expected to be available for Liverpool following a minor injury on international duty, while Klopp is expected to be on the touchline despite being unwell this week.

The game kicks off at the Anfield at 3pm on Saturday 18 November.

The game won’t be broadcast on British television. Follow the action in our live blog above.

Jurgen Klopp. The manager was taken to hospital this week but returned to oversee training and is expected to be pitchside for the match. Liverpool were on something of a roll and the international break therefore came at an inconvenient moment. With Tottenham meeting Arsenal in the early kick-off Liverpool have the chance to haul themselves in amongst the chasing pack behind Manchester City. Klopp’s side cannot afford anything less than three points.

Southampton last beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League? In 2013 the future Reds defender Dejan Lovren scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 away victory for the Saints.

Mohamed Salah. With 13 goals in his opening 19 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, the Egyptian forward has already shown himself to be a canny purchase by the Anfield hierarchy. His recent form, with six goals in his past five games, makes him the man to stop.

Liverpool to return for van Dijk in January; Man City join Griezmann race

Show/hide article…

With the January window on the horizon, there’s plenty brewing in the transfer market. All the latest deals and potential deals can be found here.

Ahead of Southampton’s trip to Anfield on Saturday, the Daily Mirror reports that Liverpool are still keen to recruit Saints captain Virgil van Dijk when the transfer window reopens.

The Reds apologised for making an unofficial approach for the £70 million-rated defender in the summer but haven’t given up hope of rekindling the transfer.

On Thursday, Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said he couldn’t guarantee van Dijk will stay at the club, admitting “everybody has got a price.”

And if van Dijk impresses on Saturday, it could convince the Liverpool hierarchy to stump up the cash for a January move.

Manchester City have entered the race to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid but face stiff competition for his signature, reports The Sun.

Griezmann is being considered by Barcelona as an alternative to Philippe Coutinho should they fail to convince Liverpool to sell the Brazilian in January. He is also a long-term target for Manchester United.

But City have apparently now contacted the forward’s representatives with a view to making an official offer next summer.

Griezmann has struggled for form this season but is still expected to lead France’s attack at the World Cup and scored in the recent friendly win against Wales.

Barcelona are putting together a lifetime contract for Lionel Messi in a bid to end speculation about his future once and for all, claims Mundo Deportivo.

The Catalan giants came to a similar agreement with Andres Iniesta in October and now want Messi to commit his future to the club.

The Argentine already has a contract until 2021 at the Nou Camp, but talk of a potential move to Manchester City has persisted.

Barcelona now hope to make Messi an offer he can’t refuse to silence the rumours for good.

David Luiz is being lined up for a shock move to Manchester United after being dropped by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, according to the Daily Express. Luiz struggled to hold down a regular place under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge but has apparently been targeted for a reunion with the Portuguese coach at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are plotting a £9m deal for wantaway Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, claims TalkSport. The Dutch stopper has been forced to settle for a place on the bench this season and could replace Rob Elliot at St James’ Park.

Claude Puel is keen to link up with Hatem Ben Arfa again at Leicester, according to the Daily Mirror. The duo spent the 2015-16 campaign together at Nice, with Ben Arfa scoring 17 goals to earn a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Croatia international Domagoj Vida is a target for Everton and AC Milan, reports The Sun. The centre-back is out of contract at Dynamo Kiev and could move to England on a free transfer in January.

Van Dijk future still uncertain

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk will tomorrow step out at Anfield for the first time since his summer transfer saga with manager Mauricio Pellegrino admitting he is unsure over the long-term future of his star centre half.

Van Dijk spent most of the summer trying to force a move to Liverpool, but was unsuccessful as Saints held firm.

There is speculation that the Reds will be back in for van Dijk during the January transfer window, and that this time they could land their man.

Pellegrino admitted that if they were prepared to cough up enough money then he could not rule out van Dijk moving, and insisted it would not be his decision over whether to sell.

He said: “You never know because the market when we talk about money everybody has got a price.

“The budget to sign players, the biggest teams have got money to try to sign players.

“I can’t decide about that. This is a question for our owners.”

He added: “I don’t know, I can’t control the market.

“I cannot control the whisper about my player because we have got a lot of good players, and most of the teams want to sign them.

“The majority of the teams in Europe want to try to improve their squad and the market is huge now around the world, and information is enormous right now.

“We can’t control this and we have to be focussed.

“Right now Virgil is thinking about us but a lot of players are thinking about other clubs, we are thinking about maybe other players to try and bring here next year.

“Everybody is focussed on their area to try to bring the best players possible for our club. It is something that happens every single transfer window.”

Liverpool’s summer pursuit of van Dijk attracted a lot of headlines, as well as some criticism after they apologised following accusations of tapping up.

Van Dijk’s transfer request also made things difficult, but the 26-year-old is now back playing regularly for Saints.

“He is training well and thinking about the club,” insisted Pellegrino.

“We can’t control the market and the whisper. We talk about something we can control.

“As a manager and people in this club we have a lot of players who are important, a lot of clubs in the world want players from our club.

“Virgil is one of this but we have to focussed on our job.”

Emotional Anfield return for Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is relishing an emotional return to Anfield.

The Saints boss is a former Liverpool player and assistant manager, and tomorrow leads a team to his former home for the first time as a boss in his own right.

Pellegrino played 13 times for the Reds in 2005 and returned to Liverpool in 2008 to work on the coaching staff under Rafa Benitez.

Pellegrino has many happy memories of Liverpool, both the club and the city, and is excited about a return.

He smiled: “It will be really, really special, and not just about football because I had been living there with my family, my children in the school, in the streets.

“It’s not just about football, it’s about the people and I have got good memories, I know the people that is working there. My only words is to be grateful.

“As a first experience in my life in England first of all as a player I think it was really good.

“I had good memories from this moment because we won the Champions League and I was in this group.

“After as a coach it was my first experience also to be in contact with professional players with Rafa Bentiez, and I can say I am really grateful for those days, for those times.”

Pellegrino is taking his first steps into English football management with Saints, and insists he isn’t dreaming of one day returning to Anfield as the club’s manager.

“In football I don’t think about tomorrow, I think about today,” he insisted.

“I don’t like to do any plans.

“I did plan when I was a player and always I failed because football is like life and in one moment everything changes.

“I leave the reality in football. Football has a lot of risks. It is really nice this profession but I think about every day.”

Pellegrino is about to pit his wits against some of the best managers in the world.

Over the next month or so he will come up against Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Arsene Wenger, Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

It is a big challenge for him but one he is excited for.

“To be in the Premier League is a nice inspiration,” he said.

“To be with these players to try to be better every single day and to try to give ideas to be better every day is an inspiration.

“My career is an inspiration because you never can be calm, can be quiet, because it is a profession you never finish and have to be ready all the time. To play against the biggest teams representing Southampton for me is amazing.”
