West Ham boss Bilic sends Mauricio Pellegrino warning after Van Dijk saga

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic has warned new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino that he will be the eventual loser from the Virgil Van Dijk saga.

And the Hammers manager insisted players and agents now have too much power in the game with Philippe Coutinho and Diego Costa also in dispute with their clubs.

West Ham had a similar standoff in January which ended with Dimitri Payet getting his move back to Marseille. Now Van Dijk is training on his own after submitting a transfer request and will miss tomorrow’s game at St Mary’s.

“We were in that situation last year and it wasn’t the first time,” said the former Croatia coach. “It is more and more now but it didn’t start last year.

“Of course I have sympathy with other managers. The most important thing is that you are on the same line as your board - then you are strong.

“At the end of the day it’s your problem, because when it finishes you are missing something on the pitch. OK, it’s a club problem but at the end of the day, it’s the manager’s problem. It’s happening now with Coutinho, with Conte and Costa or whoever.

“Of course, the power of the agents and all that, it is massive, and you can’t say that we have to fight it. We have to live with it and we have to try to find the best possible solution for the club. That is the best possible situation for the manager as well.

“It is very hard, Is it becoming every year harder? But that’s why I say the football game is very simple but the manager’s job is a very complicated job. And that’s it. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose on the pitch and off the pitch. But I never, ever advise or ask the players to stop training. That’s low. That is low. It should not be like that.”

Manuel Lanzini has been linked with a potential transfer to Liverpool to replace Coutinho. But Bilic insisted the Argentine will stay and sign a new contract.

“The Payet situation was different, Payet was 29 or 30, Lanzini is 23 or 24,” he said. “We can’t expect the players to stay forever. Nowadays nobody is staying. Manu is very happy. He feels at home here. He feels wanted.

“When the player comes and when he is on one sort of contract and he is not very well known, and he plays good the chairman can have four more years or whatever. He is very happy to give him a new contract. So that’s what happened, for example with Michael Antonio, with Aaron Cresswell, a few of the players. So it will sooner or later happen with Manuel if he continues to be the kind of player he has been for us. He is very young and it is fully deserved so far. He is very happy here.

“I am sure he is going to stay with us.”

Bilic is set to make a major reshuffle of his team for Saturday’s trip to Southampton.

Bilic will act in the wake of the 4-0 hammering at Manchester United on Sunday.

Michail Antonio is now fit after two weeks of intensive training and Aaron Cresswell is in line to take the place of Arthur Maslaku who endured a torrid time at Old Trafford.

And there could also be a place for 18-year-old Declan Rice who impressed in the 30 minutes he played as substitute.

Virgil van Dijk has the big personality to be Liverpool’s Mats Hummels

Show/hide article…

Jan Molby strongly believes Virgil van Dijk has the big personality to sort out Liverpool’s wobbly defence - if only Southampton would sell to them.

The Reds approached the centre-back without Saints’ permission earlier in the summer, leading to a grovelling apology.

Chairman Ralph Krueger yesterday emphatically said the Dutch international is staying at St Mary’s, adding: “Nobody is for sale that we don’t want to sell and so he is not for sale in this window."

However, van Dijk has handed in a transfer request, wanting a move to a bigger club, and Liverpool and Chelsea would be at the front of the queue if he forces a move.

But ex-midfielder Molby believes Southampton would rather deal with anyone else if they have to part company with van Dijk, given the summer shenanigans.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo , he wrote: "With Virgil van Dijk, everybody now knows Southampton would rather sell to Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester City than Liverpool, so I’m not convinced that will happen.

"The Southampton situation is strange. I don’t know what we have done to upset Southampton to the fact they are being so stubborn about it.

"Southampton are a selling club, and it’s not just Liverpool they sell to. They sell to everybody. They let their managers go to everybody.

"I still think we’ll sign a few decent players before the transfer window shuts, but I’d like to see van Dijk, though. I really would. He looks Champions League level.

"Van Dijk is a bit like Mats Hummels in a way, the same type. He has the big personality that Klopp has spoken about Liverpool needing in defence.

"Everybody is talking about the Reds’ defence and set-piece defending, and I can imagine Klopp is thinking ‘this is getting on my nerves now’.

“But he has no thought of changing the way he approaches games. That was on his cv. That’s his way.”

While the Reds are determined to spend big this summer, they are adamant they will not finance their spending by selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic opens up on Virgil van Dijk: Managing is complicated

Show/hide article…

The Southampton defender misses tomorrow’s clash with West Ham as he tries to force his way out of the club.

But Hammers boss Bilic admits he feels sorry for his opposite number having gone through the same thing with Dimitri Payet last season.

“It’s your problem, because when it finishes you are missing something on the pitch,” said Bilic.

“Okay, it’s a club problem but at the end of the day, it’s the manager’s problem. It’s happening now with Coutinho, with Conte and Costa or whoever.

“That’s why I say the game is very simple but the manager’s job is very complicated. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose - on the pitch and off the pitch.”

Southampton lodge £15.5 million bid for Wesley Hoedt - report

Show/hide article…

Southampton are closing in on the capture of Netherlands defender Wesley Hoedt from Lazio, sources tell Press Association.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to rule out a deal for the 23-year-old, while sources say the St Mary’s outfit have lodged a £15.5 million bid for the four-cap centre-back.

Southampton continue to insist they can retain wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk, despite the Dutchman continuing to agitate for a move to Liverpool.

When quizzed on Hoedt, Pellegrino replied: "I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it, a negotiation isn’t 80 percent or 90 percent, the negotiation is either 100 percent or zero percent.

"When he signs, a player is then for you [to talk about], but before that I have nothing to say.’’

Former Celtic star Van Dijk missed Saints’ goalless Premier League opener with Swansea on Saturday, officially due to a virus.

Pellegrino revealed the centre-back has now recovered – but will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s home league clash with West Ham.

"The Virgil situation, nothing has changed, it’s the same as last week,’’ said Pellegrino, of Van Dijk.

"For that reason I have nothing to say on that. He’s okay but he won’t be available to play.’’

The Gao family from China completed their takeover of Southampton by purchasing an 80 percent stake in the club this week.

Katharina Liebherr will retain a 20 percent investment in Saints, and Pellegrino hopes the deal will further stabilise the club’s future.

Chairman Ralph Krueger has also this week reiterated the club’s determination not to sell Van Dijk, leaving Pellegrino still confident Saints can retain their highly-rated defender.

"When I met [technical director] Les Reed and Ralph [Krueger], they told me that they want to keep the best players on the pitch,’’ said Pellegrino.

"And at this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch.

"The idea in the club was to keep the best players in the club.

"Ralph was clear, Les was clear, and hopefully we’ve got the same idea, that to progress as a club we have to keep our best players.

"And if you’ve got the fortune to bring in another good player we’ll be stronger.’’

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic sympathises with Southampton over Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic has sympathy for Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino over want-away defender Virgil van Dijk.

West Ham face Saints at St Mary’s this weekend with Pellegrino unable to call upon centre-back Van Dijk - who has submitted a transfer request.

Southampton maintain Van Dijk will not be sold, but the ongoing transfer saga is all too familiar for Bilic after he saw Dimitri Payet eventually get his way and leave for Marseille following a drawn out impasse with West Ham.

“I know that the power is too much on the side of the players and their agents,” said Bilic.

"The power is massive. And you can’t say that we have to fight it. We have to live with it and we have to try to find the best possible solution for the club.

"That is the best possible situation for the manager as well.

"That’s why I say the football game is very simple but the manager’s job is very complicated. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, on the pitch and off the pitch.

"Of course I have a lot of sympathy. It’s hard for them, and sometimes you are on the other side of the story.

“Sometimes you are in the position that you are getting the player, but it definitely doesn’t help. It doesn’t help the managers.”

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady revealed on Sky Sports’ The Debate earlier this week that 17 Premier League clubs are in favour of shutting the transfer window before the season starts.

Bilic - who insists Manuel Lanzini will be staying at the club this summer - backed the sentiments from his board, but believes the change must take place beyond the English top flight.

“Yes. It is mutual from me and the club,” said Bilic. "I would like that to happen, it would help everybody.

"For me it is has to be across the leagues. Otherwise there is no point. Ironically it would put the clubs in a worse situation that you would still lose players if clubs abroad want them and you can’t replace them. It would only protect us in that no other Premier League clubs can take your players.

"The [Philippe] Coutinho situation, it would not stop Liverpool losing him, but would stop them finding a replacement. It’s a great idea, first one I’m definitely like ‘yes’.

“Some teams are losing like 30 per cent of their teams.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino wants defensive options

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has insisted Southampton want to keep Virgil van Dijk and still sign another centre-back.

Saints are thought to be closing in on landing Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt for a fee of £15.5million, according to Sky sources.

Pellegrino refused to rule out a move for the Holland centre-back, before claiming he would rather have too many defenders than not enough this season.

Wantaway Holland defender Van Dijk continues to agitate for a transfer before the end of the month and will sit out Saturday’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

Asked if he wants to add another centre-back to his squad even if Saints retain Van Dijk’s services though, manager Pellegrino replied: "Yes, because as you know right now it’s the position that we are in disadvantage.

“I think it’s an area where we can improve with another player.”

And when quizzed on whether five frontline centre-backs would be too many, Pellegrino continued: "I prefer to have a solution on the pitch, instead of problems on the pitch. I can manage that situation.

“Sometimes you have to make decisions as quickly as possible, because the competition will not wait for us.”

Southampton remain confident of retaining Van Dijk’s services past the end of the transfer window, despite the former Celtic man still trying to force his departure.

Saints could yet then add Lazio star Hoedt to their ranks, while also refusing to let Van Dijk leave.

Van Dijk ‘won’t be available to play’

When asked about Saints’ pursuit of Hoedt, Pellegrino said: "I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it, a negotiation isn’t 80 per cent or 90 per cent, the negotiation is either 100 per cent or zero per cent.

“When he signs, a player is then for you [to talk about], but before that I have nothing to say.”

“The Virgil situation, nothing has changed, it’s the same as last week,” said Pellegrino.

“For that reason I have nothing to say on that. He’s okay but he won’t be available to play.”

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger this week backed plans for England’s summer transfer window to close before the start of next season.

And new Saints boss Pellegrino admitted he supports that position, adding: "I am in agreement with that.

"I would like to know our situation, and to keep all my players focused in our competition, in our responsibilities.

"Because to talk about the transfer market right now when we are competing, it’s not good for the players and it’s not good for us.

“At the end of a transfer window there is always a lot of movement. I would imagine in the next few days there will be movement because people will wait until the end to make good business. So I still expect deals to happen.”

West Ham’s Slaven Bilic: Player power in transfer market ‘massive’

Show/hide article…

LONDON – Virgil van Dijk’s stand-off with Southampton is just the latest example of the player power that clubs now have to face in the transfer market, according to West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, who suffered similar problems with Dimitri Payet last season.

The Hammers travel to St Mary’s on Saturday and Van Dijk will not be playing, since he remains in dispute over Saints’ refusal to sell him.

Liverpool withdrew their approach for the Dutch defender in June after an official complaint from Southampton, but with two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Van Dijk is still not training with Mauricio Pellegrino’s first team.

He has also been dropped from the Netherlands national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers as Southampton hold firm, but as the Hammers decided in January, they may eventually cut their losses on a player who has been valued at over £50 million.

“We were in that situation last year and it wasn’t the first time,” said Bilic “It is more and more now but it didn’t start last year. At the end of the day it’s your problem, because when it finishes you are missing something on the pitch.”

Payet was sold back to Marseille in January for £25m, having signed a new contract the previous February, while Van Dijk signed a six-year contract with Southampton in May of last year.

“It’s a club problem but at the end of the day, it’s the manager’s problem and it’s happening now with [Liverpool’s Philippe] Coutinho, with [Antonio] Conte and [Chelsea’s Diego] Costa or whoever,” he said referring to a series of transfer wrangles that have been a feature of this summer.

Bilic continued: "Ask me about the power of the player. Of course, the power of the agents and all that, it is massive, and you can’t say that we have to fight it. We have to live with it and we have to try to find the best possible solution for the club.

“Is it hard? It is very hard. Is it becoming every year harder? That’s why I say the football game is very simple but the manager’s job is a very complicated job. And that’s it. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose on the pitch and off the pitch.”

West Ham visit St Mary’s after losing 4-0 in their opening match at Manchester United. Southampton drew 0-0 with Swansea.
