Puel looks doomed as fed-up Southampton players turn against him

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s slim hopes of keeping his job have been hit by rising discontent in the Southampton squad.

A number of Saints players are unhappy with some of his methods, increasing the heat on the under-fire Frenchman, who is expected to be axed next week.

Mirror Sport understands certain stars have complained about the quality of his training sessions. Boss Puel ’s preference for delaying the naming of his team until shortly before kick-off has also raised eyebrows and left some feeling it prevents them preparing properly for games.

Puel is known for being a man who sticks to his beliefs and choices and refuses to compromise them. That too has also caused issues when it comes to team selection, and led to suggestions that certain players are receiving favourable treatment.

The unrest is an unwelcome headache for Puel, who is already battling to keep his job less than a year after succeeding Ronald Koeman when the Dutchman left to manage Everton.

Some Southampton supporters have turned against him due to some of the disappointing football his team has served up, with their Europa League group-stage exit also not helping.

Saints have scored just 17 league goals at home, and Wednesday’s goalless draw with Manchester United made it four top-flight home games without scoring for the first time in club history.

Puel is understood to be surprised and shocked that his work is being questioned after leading the club to a narrow EFL Cup final loss , and a potential eighth-place finish.

He has done that having lost two of his best players, defender Virgil Van Dijk and striker Charlie Austin, to injury for significant periods, while captain Jose Fonte was sold in January.

And Puel, who steered French side Nice to European qualification last season, has also achieved one of the big targets he was set when appointed by making better use of Southampton’s famed academy.

That was a big issue for the top brass during Koeman’s time in charge, when the club’s youngsters were largely ignored and deemed not up to scratch.

But Puel has put his faith in Jack Stephens after losing Van Dijk, picking the England Under-21 defender ahead of vastly-experienced Uruguay international Martin Caceres in the absence of Fonte and Van Dijk.

Stephens, 23, has made 22 appearances for Puel who has also blooded the likes of 22-year-old left-back Sam McQueen, winger Josh Sims, 20, and 19-year-old goalkeeper Harry Lewis this season.

The good and bad of Puel’s reign will all be weighed up when Southampton chiefs perform a season review after their final game at home to Stoke on Sunday.

Chairman Ralph Krueger revealed this week that will take place, and Puel said: “Any teams have a debrief at the end of the season and this is normal but the end of the season is after the last game and the last game is very important.

“We have the possibility to finish up the table and this is most important. Afterwards we have time to discuss different things like any team.”

WATCH: Premier League goals of the week

Show/hide article…

There were some cracking strikes in the Premier League this week and you can watch the best of the bunch right here.

Shinji Okazaki - Manchester City 2-1 LEICESTER: City, strolling towards the break with a two-goal lead, were stopped in their tracks as Okazaki’s spectacular improvised volley cut the hosts lead three minutes before the interval.

Nathan Redmond - Middlesbrough 1-2 SOUTHAMPTON: Redmond made the hosts pay for their lack of potency, ruthlessly curling into the top corner after striding into the box, taking advantage of some slack Boro marking.

Ross Barkley - EVERTON 1-0 Watford: Barkley brushed aside speculation about his future to fire in Everton’s winner in their 1-0 victory at home to Watford on Friday night. Barkley stepped up in the 56th minute to power home Everton’s only goal from 25 yards out.

Kyle Naughton - Sunderland 0-2 SWANSEA: Naughton flashed an effort into the top corner from a tight angle in the third minute of added time at the end of the first half. It was Naughton’s first ever Premier League goal for Swansea in what was his 141st appearance, and it left the hosts with a mountain to climb after the break.

Mesut Ozil - Stoke 1-4 ARSENAL: Alexis Sanchez and Ozil combined beautifully to double the visitors’ lead. The Chile forward threaded an inch-perfect pass to Ozil, who neatly lifted his finish over the advancing Jack Butland.

Philippe Coutinho - West Ham 0-4 LIVERPOOL: Georginio Wijnaldum smashed a superb volley off the bar, but as the ball fell to Coutinho, the Brazilian weaved his way through the West Ham defence before driving an effort past Adrian to double Liverpool’s lead.

Cesar Azpilicueta - CHELSEA 4-3 Watford: Azpilicueta restored Chelsea’s lead when he fired in after a corner came out to him on the edge of the box.

Daryl Janmaat - Chelsea 4-3 WATFORD: Janmaat reduced Chelsea’s lead with a fine individual goal, driving down the left side and then finishing into the far corner.

Kevin De Bruyne - MAN CITY 3-1 West Brom: De Bruyne doubled City’s lead, latching onto a poor clearance from the West Brom defence before powering home from the top of the box, bending the ball past Ben Foster.

Heung-Min Son - Leicester 1-6 TOTTENHAM: Son added a second on 36 minutes for Spurs, finishing on the volley from 15 yards after Dele Alli’s delightful scooped assist

Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini unfazed by goal drought

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini says he is “not worrying” despite having failed to score for Southampton in his past seven Premier League outings.

The Italian striker hit the ground running in January after moving from Napoli, scoring six goals in his first four games.

That tally included a double in the EFL Cup final loss to Manchester United in late February, while the last of those strikes came in the 4-3 win over Watford on March 4.

However, the 25-year-old is not irked by his recent form in front of goal, and knows he can take positives from his first half-season in England.

“It always happens in football, having positive and negative moments,” Gabbiadini told Sky Sports.

"When things go well they go well, but when they are hard you know you need to work hard and believe you can get more goals.

"That’s what I’m doing now, working hard and not worrying about the moment I am in.

“I am happy and the team is happy as well. When I arrived I was in front of 90,000 people playing at Wembley, it was very positive for me and my team-mates, it has been a very positive season.”

Gabbiadini penned a four-and-a-half year contract with the Saints following his move from Napoli, which was understood to be for £14.5m plus £2.5m in add-ons.

And the forward, who has been capped by Italy six times, in confident that moving to Southampton was the right decision for his career.

“I have no doubt I made the right choice,” Gabbiadini said. "When I was growing up I would watch the Premier League teams on TV and you could feel the atmosphere inside stadiums even watching at home.

"Even speaking to my agents 10 years ago I was telling them I want to play in the Premier League one day. I achieved that goal coming to Southampton.

“I am improving [my English] but I want to improve more because everything will be a lot easier. I am trying to teach some Italian to the players but it is more important that I learn more English in the coming months.”

Revealed: Who has been crowned the Saints player of the season?

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu has capped off an excellent season by winning the Daily Echo’s Southampton FC Player of the Season award.

Romeu has been the standout man of an up and down campaign for Saints in defensive midfield.

And now his stellar performances have seen him crowned the 44th Echo Player of the Season after a runaway victory in the poll.

The 25-year-old, who was signed for a bargain £5m from Chelsea in 2015, was the top pick for 65 per cent of the thousands of voters who submitted their selection for the famous gong, which lists legends Matthew Le Tissier, Mick Channon, Kevin Keegan, Peter Shilton, Alan Shearer and Rickie Lambert among its previous winners.

Romeu was by far and away the most popular choice.

His nearest rivals were Maya Yoshida and Virgil van Dijk, who claimed joint-second place in the running with 11 per cent of the vote apiece.

Yoshida has stepped up at Saints this season, having become a mainstay at centre-back after Jose Fonte’s exit and Van Dijk’s long-term injury.

The vital Dutchman was ruled out in January with a foot ligament problem.

Van Dijk has since had an operation on the problem and is set to return next season.

His performances up until his injury were sublime and he would have given Romeu a run for his money had his campaign not ended prematurely.

Following this pair, James Ward-Prowse and Ryan Bertrand both claim third place.

They both received four per cent of the vote, while Nathan Redmond, Steven Davis and Charlie Austin notched one per cent each.

It was Romeu, though, who comes out deserved winner.

The former Barcelona man, who also claimed the club’s prize, has missed just three Premier League matches - and that was only through suspension.

He has made the fourth most tackles per game (3.4) in the top-flight of any player.

It has truly been an exceptional term, which has been made more praiseworthy because of the boots he had to fill.

When Romeu arrived from Chelsea in August 2015, he was very much second choice to the brutish Victor Wanyama.

It stayed that way until, inevitably, the wantaway Wanyama was sold to Tottenham.

Romeu got his chance at the beginning of this season and has not looked back.

He is more than just a defensive midfielder, boasting a great range of passing too.

Gabbiadini talks about penalties and pressure to score at Saints

Show/hide article…

MANOLO Gabbiadini insists he does not feel under pressure to score, but hopes the goals start flowing again after a seven-game drought as Saints take on Stoke on Sunday.

The Italian striker also says he will not be working on his penalty taking after missing a spot kick in the goalless draw against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

After six goals in his opening four matches following a £14.5m move from Napoli on January transfer deadline day, injury struck and since then Gabbiadini’s goals have dried up.

Speaking through a translator, the 25-year-old said: “There’s no pressure, not at all, I am used to the pressure and in Italy the pressure was much greater, so I don’t feel the pressure at all over here.

“It’s just one of those moments,” he added, talking about the penalty against United, “that happens in football and sometimes you score two or three goals a game, but sometimes you don’t score as many.”

The former Sampdoria man has stressed that penalty taking has never been an issue in his career before.

And, therefore, he doesn’t feel the need to go and practice them in training after Sergio Romero saved his spot kick.

“So far in my career I’ve never missed a penalty,” he said. “This was the first one, so I don’t think I need to do any extra work.

“You only miss a penalty if you step up and take it.”

Gabbiadini is learning English and although he arrived not being able to speak a word of the language, he is feeling right at home at St Mary’s.

“I feel well settled now because I’ve a lot of good and nice people here at the club and they’ve all helped in some way,” he said. “I am at home now.”

“I was very happy at the start I made because that’s what I was brought here to do, to score goals, so that was a big help for me,” the Italy international stated about his incredible start.

“But after some less positive moments I have to keep working hard and keep the belief that I can get back to that scoring form I had.”

Gabbiadini, who also lists Juventus, Atalanta, Cittadella and Bologna among his former clubs, isn’t too focussed on his own form, with the team’s results his main priority ahead of the season’s finale against Stoke on Sunday.

“I want to keep working hard to get back to my scoring form but it’s not as important for me to score as it is as the team getting results," he said.

“It’s the performance that’s important rather than my own goals.”
