SAINTS: Leicester City edition now available

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida stars on the cover of the club’s official matchday magazine for Sunday’s visit of Leicester City in the Premier League.

Remember, you can find copies of all this season’s editions of SAINTS on our partner site: saintsmagazines.co.uk.

Yoshida, who captained the team for the first time in midweek, opens up on how Southampton and the people around the club have become like a family for him as he approaches his five-year anniversary with Saints.

The centre-back also became a father for the first time in November, and he explains how he’s stepping up his level of responsibility both at home and with the club.

Fellow first team player Harry Lewis has also given an in-depth feature interview following his recent rise into Claude Puel’s side, which included playing in both of the recent FA Cup ties against Norwich.

With the visit of Leicester this weekend, we’ve spoken to two men who scored their only goals for Southampton which both coincidentally came against the Foxes.

Former defenders Pelé Pedro Monteiro and Franny Benali each speak to the magazine, with the latter penning his latest column exclusive to SAINTS.

There’s an in-depth look at opponents West Bromwich Albion, with tactical insight on Claudio Ranieri’s side. There’s also analysis on Dušan Tadić’s role in the team thanks to Sam Tighe of Bleacher Report.

What’s more, you can read the views of first team manager Claude Puel, plus the latest news from the academy and Saints Foundation.

Fans’ firsts explores Southampton supporter memories, as well as all the latest ticket news and on-sale dates for future home matches.

This week’s FREE poster also depicts Shane Long, who has been given the Minimalist Footy treatment.

There are more outlets than ever from which to purchase this season’s matchday magazine which retails at £4.

You can also pre-order editions, and take out a subscription for the season from saintsmagazines.co.uk

Shane Long backing Southampton to dump Arsenal out of second competition this season

Show/hide article…

Long scored a dramatic stoppage time winner in Wednesday’s third round replay triumph at home to Norwich.

Claude Puel’s men have already dumped Arsenal out of the EFL Cup en route to the semi-finals and Long is targeting a repeat when the sides clash at St Mary’s on January 28.

Republic of Ireland striker Long said: “It would be brilliant to have another cup run.

“We always seem to meet Arsenal in the cup but it’s going to be a great game and hopefully it will be a big turn-out and the fans will get us through that one.

“They’re a good side and I think they might make a few changes as well, which they normally do, and it could be an evenly contested game.

Puel: Fonte situation has been “difficult” for Saints all season

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel believes that Jose Fonte’s situation has been a burden on his Saints team throughout this season.

The circumstances surrounding the captain’s future have taken many turns since last summer, and have culminated in Fonte rejecting pay rises and contract extensions as he eyes the St Mary’s exit door.

The unsettled 33-year-old, who has been told he won’t play for Saints while his future is in doubt, has agitated for a move away for some time, which Puel believes has been a weight the squad has had to carry.

The Portuguese international, who is an influential character in the Saints dressing room, has been heavily linked with a move to either West Ham or West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window.

“This situation with Jose is difficult for the squad,” he said. "It’s difficult for him also.

"It’s not just about this market, it’s been since the beginning of the season.

"It’s been a difficult situation for Jose because always discussions with the club about contracts or no contracts.

"This is sometimes difficult for the squad.

"I took a decision at the beginning of this window market to keep Jose out the team, to study different possibilities and to protect the team of all this speculation about Jose.

"With all this many games it’s important to keep focused about our game, not just on the situation of Jose.

“It’s difficult, but the squad can take the responsibilities.”
