Roma parody Southampton to announce signing

Show/hide article…

Roma have used news of their their latest signing to mock Southampton.

The Saints brilliantly confirmed Stuart Taylor’s new contract last week as the craze of transfer video announcements peaked.

And the epic news didn’t go unnoticed in Italy as Roma replicated it to announce the arrival of Gregoire Defrel.

The Giallorossi recently completed the move of Sassoulo forward Defrel in a £16m deal, and revealed the news - taking aim at Southampton in the process.

Roma even added a few extra touches included a Star Wars-themed intro - and shots of random goats standing on a tree’s branches.

The video, which was posted on Twitter on Thursday, had the same caption as Southampton’s: “Are we doing this right?”.

Saints promptly replied with a GIF picturing a girl that looks perplexed but Roma maintained their innocence.

This is the second ironic announcement by Roma, who informed the world of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s arrival - with the player scoring as himself on FIFA.

With the summer transfer window still ongoing, we can only expect more teasing videos to make this hilarious saga continue.

Saints have a stronger hand than ever with Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

SAINTS hold an extremely strong hand if they do decide to sell prized-asset Virgil van Dijk in this extraordinarily inflated summer transfer market.

Manchester City have just made Kyle Walker the most expensive defender of all-time when they signed him for £50m from Tottenham.

Pep Guardiola has also had an eye watering £44.5m bid turned down for Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy.

This all comes in a summer of madness, during which Manchester United have already splashed £75m on Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea could shell out up to £70m on Real striker Alvaro Morata.

That’s not to mention AFC Bournemouth spending £20m on Nathan Ake and Everton buying £100m worth of new recruits.

Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s main admirers Liverpool have had a bid of £66m turned down for their other main summer target Naby Keita of RB Leipzig, having already set a new club record after signing Mohamed Salah for £39m.

It’s safe to say the world’s gone mad and there’s no sign of it stopping.

So if Liverpool do want to land Van Dijk, or even drag Saints to the negotiating table for that matter, it will take a bid that reflects the true valuation of a player in this inflated market. £60m, for example, would just not be enough.

Saints have already stated their desire not to sell any of their key men this summer, but if they were to cash in it would undoubtedly be immensely profitable on a player they signed for £13m in 2015.

Despite Liverpool’s embarrassing climb down earlier in the window, when they apologised for their actions and dropped all interest in Van Dijk after Saints reported them to the Premier League for an ‘illegal approach’, the rumour mill is still churning away.

There is daily stories about the Dutchman’s future, although it is understood that the central defender is yet to hand in a transfer request at St Mary’s.

But with the transfer market now hitting new vulgar heights, Saints have the trump card in their hands on this one, if the Merseysiders do come knocking.

Liverpool are struggling to strike a deal with Leipzig for Keita and will, if they do make a bid for Van Dijk, find St Mary’s equally as reluctant to do business.

The Anfield club need only look at their nearest rivals in the Premier League to see what lengths clubs must now go to to land certain targets.

They will need to smash their transfer record if they are to even grasp Saints’ attentions.

Bednarek set for Saints debut

Show/hide article…

JAN Bednarek is in line to make his Saints debut as Mauricio Pellegrino’s men continue their pre-season programme at Championship side Brentford tomorrow.

The £5m signing from Lech Poznan, who is Saints’ only summer signing of 2017, arrived at the club this week, having enjoyed an extended break after playing for Poland at the European Under-21 Championships.

The 21-year-old central defender is likely to be thrown straight in to the mix as Pellegrino continues to mould his team ahead of the new Premier League season, which starts three weeks tomorrow against Swansea at St Mary’s.

It will be another chance for the Argentine to experiment with his team and get them playing the football he wants to see, having complained that the conditions of the pitch in Switzerland in their 0-0 friendly draw against St Gallen inhibited his side’s progression.

The 45-year-old stated that with time at a premium ahead of the big kick-off this week, and will be eager for his team to make big strides at The Bees.

Virgil van Dijk seems unlikely at this stage to return to the field, with the club stating that the Dutchman is continuing to step up his recovery from the foot ligament injury which has sidelined him since late January.

The central defender continues to be heavily linked with a move away to Liverpool, but has, as reported by the Daily Echo this, not handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s yet.

Ryan Bertrand has been in full training after a minor hamstring problem kept him out of the St Gallen draw and could be involved tomorrow.

Along with Bednarek, James Ward-Prowse, Matt Targett and Jack Stephens returned to the club this week after their involvement with England Under-21s at the European Championships.

The Young Lions trio will be pushing for game-time at Griffin Park tomorrow, while Nathan Redmond and Cedric Soares are yet to return to the fold but are set to join the squad for their trip to France on Monday.

The Brentford game will be Saints’ second pre-season game of five, with games at Saint-Etienne and at home to FC Augsburg and Sevilla still to come.

Liverpool gossip: Van Dijk makes decision over future

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has reportedly told Southampton he wants to join Liverpool

The Dutchman looked set to move to Anfield in a £60m deal earlier this summer only for the move to collapse.

Southampton complained about alleged tapping up and Liverpool vowed to end their interest.

But according to the Sun , Van Dijk is pushing for a move to Merseyside before the transfer window closes.

This one looks set to rumble on.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Anfield for some time as Barca eye a long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta.

According to the Mail, a stunning offer has been made - but rejected outright by Liverpool.

The Reds have no interest in selling Coutinho and certainly not for that price due to the ridiculous transfer fees elsewhere this summer.

Liverpool will consider their options carefully before deciding how to respond to RB Leipzig’s rejection of their £66million offer for Naby Keita.

Keita has been one of Jugen Klopp’s targets all summer but the club are struggling to make any progress, report the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds had hoped their improved offer for the Guinea international would have secured a breakthrough in discussions with the Bundesliga outfit.

However, it was dismissed out of hand and Liverpool are left facing the prospect of missing out on Klopp’s top summer target.

Relaxed Jurgen Klopp claims he leaves the burden of carrying Liverpool ’s search for the league title to others, writes Darren Lewis in Hong Kong .

The Anfield giants have never won the title in the Premier League, having last finished top of the table in 1990.

Boss Klopp ’s success at steering them back into the Champions League last season — though they must still negotiate a playoff next month to reach the group stage — has heightened hopes among fans that he could yet be the man to finally end that long wait.

The charismatic German ended Borussia Dortmund’s nine-year wait for a Bundesliga title six years ago and went on to land a League and Cup Double with them the following year.

Having already smashed Liverpool’s transfer record once with the £37million capture of Mohamed Salah this summer, Klopp remains keen on both RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton’s defender Virgil van Dijk , who would both surely cost more again.

Arsenal top charts for Premier League minutes given to homegrown players

Show/hide article…

Arsenal gave their academy graduates more playing time than any other Premier League side last season, a study has concluded.

The investigation conducted by Press Association Sport discovered 6,628 of Arsenal’s total Premier League minutes - 19.4 per cent of the Gunners’ total - were played by graduates of their youth set-up, with six players contributing to that tally.

Manchester United used more homegrown footballers that any other top-flight team last season (10), with 16-year-old attacking midfielder Angel Gomes becoming the first player born in or after the year 2000 to play in the Premier League.

But as a percentage of minutes played, United were still some way behind Arsenal with their total equating to 17.1 per cent.

Of the Arsenal six, only Kieran Gibbs and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are still eligible to play for England. Maitland-Niles was part of the England squad that lifted the U20 World Cup in South Korea earlier this summer.

The single biggest contributor to Arsenal’s homegrown tally was Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin, who played 2,498 league minutes. Francis Coquelin, Alex Iwobi, Emiliano Martinez were the three other academy graduates involved in the calculation.

Paul Pogba was the biggest contributor to United’s total (2,609 minutes). The France international made his Premier League debut in January 2012, before leaving to join Juventus at the end of that season, only to return last summer for a world-record £89m fee.

Bournemouth had the highest percentage of players developed in the UK youth system (90.3 per cent) but their own academy accounted for only 0.1 per cent, courtesy of a single substitute appearance apiece for Baily Cargill and Matt Worthington.

Burnley were the only side to use players developed exclusively in the UK or Europe - with UK-developed players accounting for 85 per cent - but the Clarets were one of only two sides who did not give a single minute of action to one of their own homegrown players, along with Swansea.

Manchester City had the lowest total of UK-developed players (14 per cent). They used only four players who came through from UK-based academies, with Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), John Stones (Barnsley) and Fabian Delph (Leeds) joining City youth product Kelechi Iheanacho.

Watford’s percentage of UK-developed players was the second-lowest, at 17.2 per cent, while Man City also had the greatest proportion (41 per cent) of players developed outside Europe.

The top six teams in the league - Chelsea, Tottenham, City, Liverpool, Arsenal and United - all finished in the bottom eight in terms of minutes played by UK-developed players.
