FIFA 18 ratings refresh: One player at every Premier League club who could get a downgrade

Show/hide article…

With the January transfer window done and dusted, on FIFA 18 the winter ratings refresh is just around the corner.

A lot has changed since the start of the campaign and many stars are playing well beyond the score given to them when the game was released back in September, but others aren’t doing as well.

Those who haven’t been performing throughout the year are almost certain to receive a reduction.

But which one player at every Premier League club deserves a downgrade the most? Click the right arrow above to see our predictions…

Pellegrino won’t ‘do maths’

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino won’t be powering up his calculator any time soon.

The Saints boss has ruled out any maths for the foreseeable future, insisting he is focussed on taking each game as it comes rather than setting a points total for his side in their bid for Premier League survival.

It also means trying to block out the FA Cup quarter-final tie at Wigan which could yield a Wembley spot.

He said: “I think we have to be 100 per cent in this game.

“I don’t like to do numbers right now when we have got an important game in front.

“It’s easy to do numbers but difficult to translate this into the pitch.

“I don’t want to do maths right now. I want to be focussed on what we have to do on the pitch. Try to help my players, support them.”

Saints travel to Burnley tomorrow seeking to build on a decent run that has seen them lose just two of their last ten matches in all competitions.

In contrast, Burnley, who defeated Saints 1-0 at St Mary’s earlier in the season, have not won in 2018.

However, Pellegrino is pretty confident he knows what to expect at Turf Moor.

“I think they will not change too much their style, try to compete until the end.

“I think they will try to beat us in this pitch, to attack, to manage the ball, to dominate the game.

“The key will be the team stronger mentally, don’t make too many mistake and are clinical in the important moment.”

While Pellegrino is preaching the virtues of staying focussed, not looking too hard at the table, the crucial upcoming set of fixtures or the FA Cup, the hard part could be ensuring the players take that advice.

“To talk about us, overall,” he reflected when asked how he would guard against that sort of issue.

“Thinking about us, how we can improve definitely and attack, find different solutions, how we can be stronger when away or have a lot against us.

“We have to be focused on us.

“Results are down to performances – we have to focus on what we can do, not final results.

“We all want to win but easy to say, think of the win.”

Pellegrino also refused to speculate on whether playing so many games away from home would actually be a benefit rather than a hindrance to his side.

“In six weeks’ time I’ll let you know if positive or not,” he smiled.

“Now, about opinion. Fact, will be results. We have to do our best to win games.”

Saints buzz at Cup draw

Show/hide article…

Saints have an “amazing opportunity” to make it to the FA Cup semi-finals according to Mauricio Pellegrino.

Victory against West Brom has earned Saints a spot in the last eight, where they will travel to Wigan, who were shock winners against Premier League leaders Manchester City.

A semi-final spot and a trip to Wembley awaits the victors and presents Saints with a great opportunity to progress.

“For sure it’s an amazing opportunity for us in all different aspects but we have to think about one week at a time and be fully focussed and then we will see,” said Pellegrino.

Wigan’s win over Man City shocked the football world and Pellegrino added: “It was an unpredictable result for everybody but for this reason football is amazing.

“When you play 11 against 11 anything can happen.

“In tennis play the number one with the number 100 it’s almost impossible to beat the number one, but not in football. It’s a great thing. When a team from League One plays a Premier League team the fans believe they can win and it’s true.

“Maybe the chances are smaller but there are chances in one moment.

“When you play like Wigan did the other day anything is possible.”

Saints star caught speeding at 56mph in 30mph zone

Show/hide article…

ANOTHER Saints footballer has been convicted of speeding.

Left back Sam McQueen was clocked by a speed camera doing 56mph in a 30mph zone in the New Forest, a court was told.

McQueen was captured speeding on the A336 Southampton Road at Cadnam in a 63-reg Land Rover on August 10 last year.

The 23-year-old admitted the charge but did not appear in court.

McQueen, whose address was given as Dunvegan Drive, Lordswood, Southampton, was fined £750 after admitting the charge at Aldershot Magistrates Court.

He was also ordered to pay a £75 victim surcharge and costs of £85.

His driving record was endorsed with six penalty points.

McQueen was born in Southampton and has been a player at the club since he was eight after being scouted while playing for Oakwood Rangers in the Tyro League.

A former pupil at Mountbatten School, in Romsey, he rose through the club academy following stars like Adam Lallana, James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw.

This season he has played six times and has yet to score.

He has played once for England under-21s against Denmark in March 2017.

In 2016 he went on loan to Southend United.

In the last couple of years a number of Saints players have been clocked speeding, usually on Kingsway/St Mary’s Place in the city centre. They include Soufiane Boufal, Nathan Redmond, and Dusan Tadic.
