Redmond and Ward-Prowse help Young Lions to semi-finals

Show/hide article…

Saints duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse both featured as England under-21s progressed to the semi-finals of the under-21 European Championships with a 3-0 win over Poland.

Aidy Boothroyd’s men knew a victory would be enough to see them top their group, follow the 2-1 success against Slovakia three days ago.

And within six minutes, the Young Lions strengthened their grip on top spot when Ben Chillwell passed the ball inside to his Leicester teammate Demarai Gray, who swivelled and saw his deflected shot beat Jakub Wrabel.

At half-time, Redmond was withdrawn by Aidy Boothroyd, with Jacob Murphy replacing him.

On 69 minutes, Murphy doubled the advantage when he converted from close range after more good work from Gray down the left.

With progression all but secured, Ward-Prowse was replaced by Tammy Abraham on 73 minutes after another impressive display that included a number of superb set-piece deliveries.

There was time for another goal though, as Abraham was brought down by defender Jan Bednarak to earn a penalty, who received his marching orders after a second yellow card.

Lewis Baker was not ready to relinquish penalty duties and he duly dispatched the spot kick to complete the scoring.

Both Jack Stephens and Matt Targett are still waiting for game time after watching on from the substitutes bench.

Over half of Premier League clubs open to safe standing

Show/hide article…

More than half of top flight clubs are set to tell Premier League bosses that they would be open to piloting safe standing – should such a scenario arise.

As revealed by Sportsmail on Thursday, the league wrote to all 20 of its sides to see if they would be interested in trialling the safe standing at matches.

And it is understood that the majority will confirm that they would be open to such an idea.

The issue remains an emotive one – especially on Merseyside. Standing in the top two divisions of English football was outlawed following the Taylor Report into the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

The Anfield club remain against the introduction of safe standing – their position reflecting the stance taken by the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

Across Stanley Park, Everton say they are treating the issue as hypothetical and currently not an option. A February poll of 1,400 Toffees supporters, however, found 90 per cent would favour the introduction of safe standing at the club’s planned new stadium.

In Manchester, both clubs are known to be in favour in principle.

While United declined to comment, they have previously told a fans forum that they are in favour of the concept and would be open to piloting safe standing at Old Trafford.

City say they are also open to safe standing ‘in the right circumstances’.

Previously, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has disclosed that he is open to safe standing. Across north London, Tottenham hold a similar view.

‘We have consistently said that we would be open to investigating the opportunity to incorporate safe standing within our new stadium should legislation and licencing permit this,’ a Spurs spokesperson said.

Chelsea have already gone on record to say they would consider safe standing at the soon-to-be rebuilt Stamford Bridge if laws are changed while West Ham co-chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan are both on the record in favour of its introduction.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is an advocate and has been to Parkhead to see how Glasgow Celtic’s 2,600-capacity rail seating area operates.

In the West Midlands, West Brom would be open to a pilot scheme at The Hawthorns.

Swansea say they are also open to the idea, although would need permission from the local authority as their stadium is council-owned while Burnley are also in favour but believe a change in legislation would be needed before such a trial could take place.

Newcomers Brighton have a similar stance and officials have travelled to Germany and Scotland to view safe standing areas, but the club say any final decision would depend on appetite from fans.

Newcastle are currently considering their position and have previously sent a small delegation to Celtic.

The hypothetical question is the latest development following initial talks between the Premier League and clubs in November. The league is carrying out a wide-ranging feasibility study of which the survey is part. They will examine whether a change in the law would be needed to allow the introduction of safe standing and will liaise with fan groups, police forces and other interested parties.

Leicester City and AFC Bournemouth declined to comment, while Southampton, Watford, Huddersfield and Stoke could not be reached.

Saints target sent off as England cruise into Euro U21 semi finals

Show/hide article…

England Under-21s cruised into the semi finals of Euro 2017 after dismantling hosts Poland tonight.

Demarai Gray, Jacob Murphy and Lewis Baker’s penalty sealed a comfortable 3-0 win as England escaped the group stages at the tournament for the first time since 2009.

To complete a miserable night for the hosts, defender Jan Bednarek - who Saints are interested in signing - was sent off for two bookable offences late on.

England - who again started with Saints pair James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond, with Jack Stephens and Matt Targett again unused subs - topped Group A ahead of Slovakia, who beat Sweden 3-0, and will play their last-four game next Tuesday.

But they must wait to discover their opponent.

Aidy Boothroyd’s assured side - who could play the runner-up of Groups B or C or the winner of C, which may be Germany - were always in control in their best display of the competition.

With Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham benched after two gruelling games, Redmond led the line with Gray and the Leicester winger made an instant impact.

England had already enjoyed a fast start with Ward-Prowse, Lewis Baker and Alfie Mawson all going close within the opening five minutes before Gray put them in control.

The 20-year-old scored just twice for Leicester during a frustrating last season but was on target he when he collected Ben Chilwell’s pass and his 25-yard shot hit Jaroslaw Jach to fly past Jakub Wrabel.

Chilwell’s marauding presence on the left caused constant problems while Baker, John Swift - once of Southampton Tyro Leaguers Pace Youth - and Ward-Prowse easily held sway in midfield.

Swift volleyed wide after 55 minutes from another brilliant set-piece delivery from Ward-Prowse.

A second goal was needed to avoid late nerves and it duly arrived after 69 minutes in fine style as England hit Poland on the break.

Ex-Saint Calum Chambers won the ball in his own area and found Baker who sent Gray scampering away down the left with Josh Murphy, on for Redmond at half-time, in support.

Gray raced into the area and squared for the Norwich winger to tap in at the far post.

Abraham, on for Ward-Prowse, won a penalty after being felled by Bednarek with nine minutes left.

The defender was sent off for a second booking and Baker dispatched the spot kick to add gloss to the result.

England U21s: Injury worries for Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah

Show/hide article…

England Under-21 pair Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah will be assessed on Friday to see if they have a chance of playing in Tuesday’s European Championship semi-final.

Southampton forward Redmond and Chelsea midfielder Chalobah were both replaced in the first half of the 3-0 win against Poland.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd said: "They have been massive players for us, in qualifying and here.

“We will see how they are.”

Chalobah lasted 39 minutes before limping off with a groin injury, while Redmond was replaced at half-time with an unspecified problem.

Derby midfielder Will Hughes - who is set to join Watford for £8m - replaced Chalobah, while Norwich winger Jacob Murphy came on for Redmond in attack, scoring the second goal.

“Nathaniel felt a little bit stiff around his groin area and we felt it best to bring him off, we didn’t want to make it any worse,” added Boothroyd.

"Redmond was the same, we just felt that if he had kept going he might have done some real damage.

“We have five days now and I want all 23 players available for the semi-final. Over to you, medics.”

England were facing elimination at half-time of their second game against Slovakia but came from behind to win, and were always in control against the hosts Poland once Demarai Gray had hit a sixth-minute opener.

Boothroyd is now in confident mood ahead of Tuesday’s semi-final, even though England will not learn who their opponents will be until Saturday.

“It’s a great moment,” the former Watford manager said.

"After the first game which was a draw it was a bit doom and gloom but we have a good group here and got the two wins that we needed. It was a high-pressure game, if we hadn’t won then we would have been out.

“We carried out the game plan to a T. We controlled the game and played really well.”

If it wasn’t for the two injuries to Chalobah and Redmond then this would be the perfect evening for Aidy Boothroyd.

James Ward-Prowse had said that he felt England could go to another level and the captain was spot on as England produced their best display of the championship.

England were assured, creative and totally dominant to gain an emphatic victory, the margin of which would have been far greater had it not been for Jakub Wrabel, the Poland goalkeeper.

England would have faced criticism had they made another exit so it is only right to acknowledge the achievement of finishing as group winners.

Sixteen of this squad helped England win the Toulon tournament for the first time in 22 years last summer so there is a togetherness that exists and confidence is growing.

Momentum is everything in tournament football.

Fine for Saints fan stripped naked at St Mary’s in £50 dare

Show/hide article…

A SAINTS fan who was bet £50 by his friends to streak on the St Mary’s pitch has been fined the same amount in court.

Brett Andrews, 43, had been drinking while watching the Saints take on Stoke City on May 21, and was bet by his five friends, £10 each to streak on the pitch.

After agreeing, he stripped naked and ran from block 15 in the Chapel stand behind the goal, but was stopped by two stewards at the advertising boards.

The 43-year-old, of Neva Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency and was fined £50, as well as being given a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge.

Southampton Magistrates Court heard how Mr Andrews, who is unemployed, ‘needed the money’ and was ‘only doing it for a laugh’.

Prosecuting, Rachel Standish told the court that two stewards held onto Mr Andrews by the side of the pitch and dressed him, with others leaving the stadium because of his actions.

Ms Standish said: “The stewards noticed that there were families around, and indeed some did leave after witnessing the incident. He had been drinking and he did go quietly after the incident.

“It was his mates who dared him to do something stupid. He was bet to streak on the pitch and he wasn’t really thinking.

“He is ashamed and embarrassed at his actions.”

Defence solicitor Louise Morgan said the actions of Mr Andrews were ‘stupid’ and that he had no intentions of causing harm to anyone in the stadium.

Ms Morgan said: “He made a stupid decision and he had no intentions of making anyone feel scared or of causing harm to anyone.

“He was dared by his friends to streak and that they would give him ten pounds each, and he was with five friends.

“Mr Andrews said he needed the money and he was stopped by the stewards.”

Presiding, magistrate Ann Fielder said: “A combination of your friends and the amount you had to drink lead to what turned out to be a most stupid and foolish incident.

“It was a football match with a lot of people and you heard that someone left when they saw what you had done.”

Pathway clear for Saints to appoint Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Saints’ managerial hunt is drawing to a close with Mauricio Pellegrino expected to become the club’s new boss.

Pellegrino and Frank De Boer were the two leading candidates for the vacancies at both Saints and Crystal Palace, with the former having become first choice for at least the role at St Mary’s.

Palace are believed to have been told that Pellegrino favours joining Saints, and therefore they moved quickly to offer De Boer the job.

It removes the last remaining obstacle and gives Saints a clear run in negotiating a deal to make the 45-year-old Argentinian their new manager, with no last minute hitches expected.

The Daily Echo understands that it is touch and go that there will be a formal announcement from Saints this side of the weekend, with the start of next week looking more likely.

It is believed Markus Weinzierl joined Pellegrino and De Boer on the Saints shortlist, but Pellegrino has impressed the most in interviews.

The former Barcelona and Liverpool player, who has managed at Valencia and Alaves in Spain as well as Estudiantes and Independiente in his native Argentina, is in a similar mould to his good friend and former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino.

His footballing philosophy and willingness to develop young players have been key factors in attracting Saints’ interest.

Unlike Pochettino, there also won’t be any language issues as Pellegrino speaks good English.

Weinzierl appeared late on the radar and was a somewhat left-field contender for the role, but is admired by the club’s managerial recruitment team of Les Reed and Ross Wilson.

Weinzierl’s record certainly suggests he ticks many of the boxes the club are looking for, though he would have been a tough sell to the club’s fans who may have viewed him as a very similar type of appointment to the recently axed Claude Puel.

Pellegrino, however, is clearly now first choice for the job and and is expected to become the club’s new manager.

Virgil van Dijk: Chelsea closing in on £60m deal for Southampton defender - report

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk, 25, has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks.

He initially looked set to be heading for Liverpool this summer.

But the Reds ended up withdrawing their interest and had to issue an embarrassing apology after being accused of tapping up the defender.

And, according to Sky Italia, Chelsea are now in pole position to pull off a big-money deal.

The Blues romped to the Premier League title in their first season under Antonio Conte.

But the Italian is keen to bolster his options at centre-back ahead of a Champions League campaign next term and with veteran skipper John Terry about to leave Stamford Bridge.

Eden Hazard, Heung-min Son: Premier League players at risk of missing start of season

Show/hide article…

Summer upon us and Premier League footballers across the country are enjoying a well-earned break after an arduous season.

For a select few, though, the summer intermission represents a vital opportunity to recover from injury and regain fitness before the dawn of the new campaign.

However, with the Premier League season getting underway on August 12, many are in danger of missing their club’s opening fixtures and, in some cases, even further.

Here, with the help of PhysioRoom, we take a look at the players who are battling to be fit for the start of the 2017/18 campaign…

The Arsenal fan-favourite has become something of a forgotten man at the Emirates, given the longevity of his spell on the sidelines. The Spain international last featured in October’s Champions League victory over Ludogorets, before a tendon issue forced him off. Cazorla underwent surgery in December but failed to recover in time to feature again last term, and a lengthier-than-expected recovery means his spell on the sidelines could surpass 12 months.

Wilshere’s renaissance at Bournemouth was cut short when he fractured his leg against Tottenham in April. The 25-year-old returned to Arsenal to begin rehabilitation but it appears the start of the new campaign will come too soon for the midfielder, whose career continues to be ravaged by injury.

Having missed the majority of the 2015/16 campaign with a ligament injury to his right knee, Bournemouth striker Wilson suffered a similarly severe injury to his left knee midway through last season. The 25-year-old is expected to be out until early October, ruling him out of at least eight of the Cherries’ opening Premier League games.

Marney’s season came to an abrupt end in January when he came off second best in a challenge with Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. Clarets boss Sean Dyche warned Marney faced a “long period of rehab”, and the 33-year-old looks set to miss the first seven games of the new season.

Premier League champions Chelsea will be without Hazard for the start of their title defence after he broke his ankle while training with Belgium. The Blues expect to be without their talisman for three months after he underwent surgery, but he could be back in time to feature against Arsenal in mid-September.

The winger’s promising start to life at Goodison Park was curtailed by a significant knee injury in December, which has since required two operations to repair his meniscus and cruciate ligament. Bolasie is expected back in the New Year but the 28-year-old is hoping to be back in December.

Coleman suffered a fracture to his tibia and fibula following a challenge with Neil Taylor in an ill-tempered World Cup Qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Wales in March. The initial prognosis ruled Coleman out of action for at least five months, meaning he is unlikely to return in time for the start of the campaign, even if his recovery is seamless.

Fitness problems have stifled Gundogan’s progress in recent seasons and they resurfaced just four months into his City career when a knee injury halted his bright start to life in England. Keen to reclaim the midfield role he was in the process of making his own, the Germany international has vowed to sacrifice his summer break to ensure he is fit for the start of City’s campaign. However, given his susceptibility to injury, both club and player will be keen not to rush him back sooner than necessary.

Injured in the same game which saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s career at Manchester United come to an end, Rojo’s promising campaign in the heart of the United defence was stopped short when he injured his knee against Anderlecht in the Europa League. Unlike Ibrahimovic, though, the Argentina international will have the opportunity to run out at Old Trafford again, although United have yet to confirm when that will be.

Shaw overcame a lack of form, and public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho, to produce some of the best football of his United career last season, two years on from his horrific double-leg fracture. But ligament damage to his foot in late April stopped his progress and now the left-back faces a battle to be fit for the start of next season.

Spurs will have to do without the goals and energy of Son until September after he fractured his right arm while playing for South Korea. The forward is facing three months on the sidelines having undergone surgery on his forearm, plunging his participation in key clashes against Chelsea and West Ham into doubt.

Lamela’s long-standing hip injury has significantly hampered his career at Tottenham. The 25-year-old underwent surgery on his hip in April after spending majority of last season on the sidelines. A fresh setback in his recovery has extended his absence, which looks set to reach a full calendar year.

Rose damaged knee ligaments against Sunderland on January 31 before an early return to training exasperated his condition. The England left-back underwent surgery in May only to suffer a setback on his road to recovery. As such, the 26-year-old is doubtful for the start of Spurs’ campaign - which sees Chelsea travel to Wembley on the second weekend.
