Southampton re-sign Maya Yoshida as Virgil van Dijk saga continues

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida has committed his future to the club by signing a new three-year contract, as the Virgil van Dijk transfer saga rumbles on.

The Japan international, who has made 138 appearances for Saints since joining from Dutch club VVV-Venlo in 2012, has agreed terms on a deal which runs until the summer of 2020.

Saints’ football vice chairman Les Reed told southamptonfc.com: "We are extremely pleased to have reached a new agreement with Maya, who is a vital part of our squad, not only on the pitch, but off it.

"Maya is a player who has taken great strides in his game during his time with us and his influence was felt particularly last season as he formed outstanding partnerships with both Van Dijk and Jack Stephens, helping the team reach the EFL Cup final.

"Maya is an excellent example for any young professional to follow and it was important to ensure that we extended our commitment with him.

"We are excited about the depth we now possess at the centre-back position for the years ahead, with Maya’s new deal strengthening our excellent group even further for the coming seasons.’’

Yoshida has played every minute of Southampton’s three games this season, including the Premier League clashes with Swansea and West Ham.

His new deal is the second bit of positive defensive news for the south-coast club this week following the arrival of Dutch centre-back Wesley Hoedt from Lazio.

Yoshida, 28, said: "There was no reason to leave the club. I have been here for five years. In that time I have had difficult moments, good moments - everything.

"I feel like it’s my home and I’m very happy to continue my journey with Southampton. It’s a new chapter for my career.’’

Meanwhile, the club will continue to be without want-away defender Van Dijk as they aim to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

The future of Van Dijk, who handed in a transfer request earlier this month, which remains the hot topic.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Van Dijk would not be involved at Huddersfield on Saturday, although he had no comment to make on the Netherlands international reportedly speaking to Chelsea.

"I don’t have this information, I don’t want to give any opinion about that,’’ Pellegrino said. "Virgil’s situation [is that] nothing [has] changed, I have nothing to say.

"In the future it could be possible (that Van Dijk plays alongside Hoedt) but we will never know what will happen in the future.

"We’ll expect the best from Wesley, from Virgil for us. I think all of them can help the team to be stronger and this is our goal right now.’’

Pellegrino believes Hoedt, who could make his debut at the John Smith’s Stadium, offers the Saints something new, while praising the attitude of Yoshida.

"Wesley is a young player, a young international, who can help us to be stronger in defence, and who is left-footed,’’ Pellegrino added.

"He’s a profile of player we don’t have and can hopefully settle as quick as possible with the rest of the team to be available and we will decide [Friday] if we can include him in the squad.’’

Speaking about Yoshida, Pellegrino added: "Maya has got the right mentality to grow with the team. He’s a positive player, he’s always open minded to learn and it’s nice to keep with us a positive player.

"He’s a really good professional and we want to keep our best players in the club. This is a good signing for us.’’

Pellegrino reluctant to give up on new system

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will not turn his back on the 3-4-3 formation – despite its humiliating consequences in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the League Cup second round.

While Pellegrino’s not yet ready to move away from the favoured 4-2-3-1, he believes having an alternative formation in Saints’ armoury will be very useful.

The three at the back system, which is highly popular in the Premier League, was dysfunctional against Championship Wolves, but Pellegrino is keen not to dismiss using it again.

“It was something that I thought was the best way to play on Wednesday night with the players that we had available to play against this kind of team,” he said.

“In some moments we played well and some moments not. Defensively we controlled them. We conceded two soft goals that we can avoid in the future in set plays and counterattack, when we change the formation and we change the shape.

“I wanted to experience [that formation] in some official game because we haven’t had much time in the past or in the training game or friendly in game to do much changing.

“Right now, obviously we lost, but we have to learn and think what we did in the right way and what we can improve on."

The Argentine was asked whether it was something that he’d go back to in the future. He replied: “Why not, yes.”

Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League match at high-flying Huddersfield Town, Pellegrino stated that his squad has a clean bill of health.

Record signing Mario Lemina suffered a significant wound to his right leg against West Ham last weekend, but has been patched up and is available for the trip to the Terriers.

New £15m signing Wesley Hoedt, the centre-back who arrived from Lazio this week, may be involved at the John Smith Stadium and Pellegrino will run the rule over the new boy today to decide if he’ll make the squad.

“Wesley is a young player, a young international player that can help us to be strong in defence,” the St Mary’s chief said about his new arrival.

“He is left footed and the profile of player we don’t have.

“Hopefully he can settle as quickly as possible with the rest of the team and we decide if we can include him in the squad.”

The 45-year-old boss doesn’t plan to change much against Huddersfield, who are second in the top flight after two games.

“I think we will continue in the same way that we had been playing the first two Premier League games,” he said.

“I think we have to see this game as a reference for us because I think we deserved to win those two games and it’s not easy.

“We have been playing on good performance and keeping going, try to learn from yesterday.

“At the top level today when you are not focussed for five minutes or ten minutes and when you leave some details aside it is really difficult to win games and we have to know that.”

Saints not planning on further signings

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Saints are not planning on making further signings before the close of the transfer window - but are poised to act if a fantastic deal suddenly presents itself.

The Saints has made three summer swoops, but at this stage he is not anticipating adding any further.

When asked if he expected more incomings, Pellegrino replied: “At the beginning no, but you never know what will happen in the last minute. If there is some opportunity we are ready.”

Saints now face something of a lack of games this season after their early elimination from the League Cup at the hands of Wolves.

It will leave a few fringe players such as Jordy Clasie struggling to get any game time, so it remains possible Saints could look to move on one or two before the window closes.

“I don’t know. We’ve got another seven days,” said Pellegrino. “There’s a lot of things, because we have important players in our squad that a lot of teams wants our players.

“But I can manage the market, I can manage the players because the players are active in the club and this decision is not just for me.

“I translate to the directors, the chairman, my point of view about the squad.

“It will stay private, but I think we’ve got a really good squad, the majority of them are young. We have a lot of things to improve and we’ve got to keep going.”

Pellegrino also insisted he knows nothing of reports that Virgil van Dijk has met Chelsea representatives over a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Newspaper reports have surfaced suggesting the Dutch centre half and his representatives have spoken with officials from both Chelsea and Arsenal over a potential move before the transfer window closes next week.

However, Pellegrino admitted he was none the wiser.

“I don’t have this information,” he said.

“I don’t want to give any opinion about that.

“The Virgil situation nothing changed. I have nothing to say.”

There was some good centre half news yesterday as Maya Yoshida put pen to paper on a new three year contract.

“I am really pleased because Maya has got the right mentality to grow with the team,” said Pellegrino.

“It’s a positive player, always open minded to learn and it’s nice to keep with us a positive player, a really good professional.

“We want to keep our best players in the club and this is the best for us.”

Liverpool should bid for Van Dijk in next few days: Southampton will break - John Aldridge

Show/hide article…

Liverpool could yet make a move for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk before Thursday’s deadline

That is what Liverpool legend John Aldridge hopes will happen ahead of next Thursday’s deadline.

The Reds have wanted Van Dijk all summer but have had to be careful since allegations of an illegal approach.

Chelsea are challenging them in the race, but the Dutchman is desperate to move to Anfield.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has ruled the fit centre-half out of action again for Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield.

And with one week to go in the transfer window, Liverpool will have to act soon to land their top defensive target.

Aldridge believes Southampton will break soon, having stood firm so far on their stance Van Dijk is not for sale.

Football transfer news and rumours: ‘Arsenal close in on Virgil van Dijk as Shkodran Mustafi linked with Inter Milan’

Show/hide article…

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, reports The Sun.

The Dutchman has attracted interest from several clubs this summer - most notably Liverpool and Chelsea - especially after handing in a transfer request.

The Sun says Saints remain resolute that Van Dijk will not be sold, despite signing defender Wesley Hoedt from Lazio.

However, it is thought that a fee in the region £50 million would be enough to lure the 26 year-old from St Mary’s and Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen his back line after reports that Shkodran Mustafi could be on his way to Inter Milan.

Cristiano Ronaldo has demanded a massive pay rise at Real Madrid, according to The Sun.

(Reuters) - Southampton defender Maya Yoshida has signed a new three-year contract to extend his stay until 2020, the Premier League club have said.

The Japan international joined Southampton from Dutch side VVV Venlo in 2012 and has made 138 appearances. He played 23 league games last season, becoming the first Japanese player to feature in 100 Premier League games.

“There was no reason to leave the club. I have been here for five years. In that time, I have had difficult moments, good moments – everything,” Yoshida told the club’s website.

“I feel like it’s my home and I’m very happy to continue my journey with Southampton. It’s a new chapter for my career.”
