Saints set incredible England benchmark

Show/hide article…

A MAGNIFICENT seven England call ups has ensured no other club are better represented for the national team than Saints at senior and under-21 level.

That bumper number of St Mary’s men have been picked to join up with Three Lions squads for up coming games next month.

Two of those, Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster, got the nod for Gareth Southgate’s first-team, as they head into a World Cup qualifier against Scotland on June 10 at Hampden Park, followed by a friendly against France on June 13.

And in an initial 28-man England Under-21 training squad for the European Championships in Poland next month, five Saints men were selected.

James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond, Jack Stephens, Matt Targett and Sam McQueen will all join up with Aidy Boothroyd’s side for a training camp at England St George’s Park next week and will be hoping to make the reduced 23-man squad for the Euros.

Those magnificent seven have ensured that no other club in the country have more players across the two rosters than Saints.

Premier League champions Chelsea, league runners up Tottenham and third placed Manchester City follow with five representatives across the squads.

Manchester United had four players called up, while Arsenal and Leicester have three and Liverpool, Sunderland, Derby and Wolves (2) are the only other clubs to have more than one man linking up with the national team.

Both Ward-Prowse and Redmond received England senior caps in March, coming on as substitutes in a friendly defeat to Germany in Dortmund.

At the time, Southgate explained that the duo would return to the under-21s side to finish their Young Lions careers at the Championships this summer, which England start on June 15 against Sweden.

Meanwhile, three other Saints men have been called up to their respective national teams.

Cedric Soares has been included in Portugal’s squad for this summer’s Confederations Cup and Sofiane Boufal was handed a place in the Morocco squad ahead of games against Netherlands and Cameroon.

Dusan Tadic has been named in the Serbia squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier at home to Wales in June.

reveals Premier League tables beyond the 2016/17 season

Show/hide article…

Spurs top the table if only games this year counted - but what would the table look like if all games from the last two, three or 13 seasons counted? Read on to find out…

And so the curtain falls on another Premier League season. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are champions in his first year in English football.

Arsene Wenger misses out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 1997, while the three sides from the north-east are consigned to the Championship.

But what if the table was not based on the conventional 38-game format? What if the goalposts are shifted and different time spans considered? Sky Sports offers several alternative interpretations on the Premier League table.

No other team has more points than Mauricio Pochettino’s side this year. Although Spurs have played one game more than their closest competitors in 2017, this year’s winners Chelsea were still six points adrift of their London rivals.

Arsenal’s form towards the end of the season sees them make the top four, with Liverpool - who pipped the Gunners to fourth place over the season - seventh.

Swansea’s resurgence under Paul Clement has them in eighth, while relegated Hull also experienced a bounce under Marco Silva as they picked up 21 of their 34 points this calendar year.

Of concern to Sean Dyche and Burnley would be their form in 2017 - only relegated Middlesbrough and Sunderland picked up fewer points since the turn of the year.

Pochettino’s side can count themselves extremely unlucky over the course of the last two seasons. Chelsea’s dismal 2015/16 season sees them 13 points behind Spurs, while Leicester lie in seventh; 31 points adrift.

Over the course of the last two seasons, Spurs have not only scored the most number of goals (155), but conceded the fewest (61), and are one of only two sides to concede fewer than a goal a game.

Despite a disappointing 2016/17 for Arsenal, they make it a north London one-two. Manchester United, so often the kings of the Premier League era, finished sixth this season and this is where they reside in this table.

Of the sides to play 76 games, unsurprisingly Sunderland sit bottom with an unhealthy -54 goal difference.

Crystal Palace fans will also be alarmed with their efforts, while Watford’s owners could be forgiven for their hire and fire policy since their return to the top tier of English football.

For entertainment, it has to be Bournemouth. They’ve been involved in games with the most number of goals (234).

Manchester United have struggled by their standards since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013. Since then, three managers have tried and failed to return the Premier League trophy.

United average a sixth-placed position since Sir Alex left - some 43 points fewer than Chelsea. Everton have scored more than United in this period and, along with Southampton, prove to be consistent performers with both clubs breaching the 200-point mark.

The 2016/17 season finally saw Sunderland relegated to the Championship. They have flirted with relegation for the past five seasons and finish below Leicester in this table, despite playing 38 games fewer.

Arsenal’s board face one of the most important decisions in their recent history this summer, with Arsene Wenger confirming his future will be decided after this weekend’s FA Cup final.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans remain divided on their most successful manager. What is beyond debate is they have gone 13 seasons without lifting the Premier League trophy.

Since the year of the Invincibles, only Chelsea and Manchester United have acquired more points than Wenger’s side. Indeed, Chelsea and United are the only sides to breach the 1,000-point mark.

The top six we know today have consistently outperformed their counterparts in this period, with no other side able to surpass the 800-point mark. Only seven teams have featured in every season since 2004/05.

Which players have cost the most in transfer fees per Premier League minute since last summer?

Show/hide article…

Which players have cost the most in transfer fees per Premier League minute since last summer?

Which players have cost the most in transfer fees per Premier League minute since last summer? Read on to find out…

Tottenham winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou is the most expensive summer signing from last year per minute, costing a remarkable £183,673.47 for every 60 seconds of Premier League action since his £9m move from Marseille in August.

That figure almost equates to purchasing a flat outright in the surrounding area every minute.

Nkoudou only clocked 49 minutes in the Premier League this season from eight brief substitute appearances.

Meanwhile, Michy Batshuayi also moved from Marseille to the Premier League last summer, joining champions-to-be Chelsea in a £33m deal.

But the Belgium striker only managed 239 minutes during the season, including 19 substitute appearances and just one start - equating to £138,912.13 in transfer fees per minute.

However, the 23-year-old still managed to score five league goals during his limited game time, including the league-winning goal at West Brom, before netting twice against Sunderland on the final day.

Arsenal’s Lucas Perez has failed to make an impact in England since his £17.1m move from Deportivo last August and has cost £64,528.30 for each of his 265 minutes on the pitch.

Former Premier League champions Leicester signed Nampalys Mendy from Nice for £13m in July last year, but the Frenchman only registered 271 minutes for the Foxes - that’s £49,970.48 a minute.

Manchester United Paul Pogba is the anomaly among the leading pack, in terms of having played an impressive 2,608 minutes - but his world-record £93.25m price tag still averages at £35,755.37 per minute.

In addition to Nkoudou, Spurs’ summer signings Moussa Sissoko and Vincent Janssen also made the top 20, costing £33,259.42 from 902 minutes and £22,355.77 from 832 minutes, respectively.

Check out the table below to see the most expensive summer signings per minute…

Transfer news: Toulouse striker Martin Braithwaite being eyed by West Ham and Southampton

Show/hide article…

According to L’Equipe, the Premier League pair have been impressed by the 25-year-old, who can operate anywhere across the front three.

He scored 11 goals in 34 Ligue 1 outings for Toulouse this season and it has been suggested that he will be sold this summer with his contract expiring in 2019.

The French club would like to keep the Dane and tie him down to a longer deal, but it is thought that a bid of around £8m will be enough to convince them to sell.

That figure will not put off either West Ham or Southampton, who are both expected to reinforce their forward lines when the summer transfer window opens.

Pitch work under way at Staplewood

Show/hide article…

As the players depart Staplewood Campus for the summer, the team that looks after the pitches steps up the work for renovating them ahead of the squad returning for pre-season.

Head Groundsman Graeme Mills gave us an insight into the amount of work that is going on at the club’s training base.

“This is the busiest time of year for us,” he said. "All the vegetation gets removed from all the pitches, all the pitches also get top-dressed, lots of holes are punched into them and they’re reseeded to go again for the next season.

"The aim is for the pitches to be consistent all the way through the club and to keep it the same as the stadium.

“We take a lot of pride in it. The lads are here working late to get all these pitches done, so they’re going above and beyond.”

With five full-size pitches, four smaller ones and two full-size 3G surfaces, there is plenty for the grounds staff to maintain, and they plan their renovation work to ensure there is always at least one pitch available over the summer in case any players are in for rehabilitation work.

“We try to structure it in a way that there’s always grass available for people to train on,” said Mills. “One of the pitches was taken out going on six weeks ago now, so that one will be in use from next week for any rehabilitation work through the summer.”

While the pitches looked in excellent condition at the end of the season, Mills explained how it is vital they still carry out the renovation work.

“A lot of people look at the grass and say ‘Why are you doing it?’ because it’s lovely and green at the end of the year, but if we don’t do it then the pitches won’t be like that at the end of the following season,” he said.

“Basically, it’s to remove any weed grasses and any algae that’s built up on the top, so the pitches free draining for the following winter. All of the work we do now is basically to help out through the winter months next year.”
