Puel’s son on trial at AFC Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

AFC Bournemouth are running the rule over midfielder Paulin Puel – the son of Saints boss Claude.

The 19-year-old started for Stephen Purches’s under-21s in yesterday’s friendly against visitors QPR.

Puel, who came through the youth ranks at Nice, is training with Cherries this week and showed some neat touches in the opening period.

Capped by France under-19s on two occasions, Puel has not played for Nice since dad Claude departed for St Mary’s last summer.

The teenager made 13 appearances during the 2015-16 season when his father was in charge of the Eaglets - 11 of which were in Ligue One.

Prior to that campaign, he had made three outings across two seasons for the Allianz Riviera side, including his debut against Monaco as a 16-year-old.

As a youth player, Puel spent time at Lille and Lyon, spells which coincided with his father being first-team manager at those clubs.

Saints knocked out of FA Youth Cup

Show/hide article…

Despite making a bright start to the game, Saints were three goals down at the break, as Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Lukas Nmecha.

City added a fourth with 20 minutes remaining, as Demeaco Duhaney finished smartly, to seal their progress to the last eight of the competition.

Craig Fleming was able to name a strong side for the clash with City, as Yan Valery, Thomas O’Connor and Callum Slattery all started at the Academy Stadium.

The visitors made a bright start to the game, as they looked to hit City on the counter, with Jonathan Afolabi twice going close inside the opening 12 minutes.

After being denied by a smart save from Aro Muric, the striker then flashed a shot across the face of goal that very nearly found the far corner.

Those early opportunities would soon come back to haunt Saints, as they fell behind midway through the first half. Foden, having a heavy influence on proceedings from the number ten role, was the man to open the scoring.

The ball broke kindly for the City man inside the penalty area, and he showed composure to fire low across Adam Parkes into the far corner of the net.

To reach this stage, Saints had to come back from a goal down in both matches, but their task at the Academy Stadium was going to be much harder once City doubled their lead.

Brahim Diaz burst to the byline and cut the ball back across goal for Sancho, who produced a clinical finish from 12 yards to make it two-nil.

Things would get even harder for Saints just before the break, as an incisive move from the hosts saw left-back Demeaco Duhaney cross for Nmecha to tap home from close range.

Michael Obafemi, Saints’ matchwinner in the previous round against Wigan, was introduced at half time, but a collision inside the first minute ended his night, with Harlem Hale taking his place.

City continued to dominate possession after a lengthy delay for Obafemi, and they were within inches of adding a fourth just before the hour.

Sancho found space on the edge of the box and curled a shot towards goal, but saw his effort come back off the post before Saints were able to clear.

The fourth arrived with 20 minutes remaining, as Duhaney showed good composure to finish well after Tom Dele-Bashiru had been denied by the post.

Parkes made a brilliant double save late on to prevent a fifth, but it was City who progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

Southampton accept defender Virgil van Dijk will miss EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Southampton have suffered a huge blow in their EFL Cup hopes after privately accepting Virgil van Dijk won’t be fit for the final next month.

Claude Puel maintained a slim hope that the Dutchman would recover in time from an ankle problem for the Wembley showdown on February 26.

But the club have now lost all faith in seeing their defensive leader appear in their first cup final since 2003.

Van Dijk has been lined up to see a second specialist this week after being forced off in Sunday’s win against Leicester after a challenge by Jamie Vardy. However, the expectation is that he will have to sit out the next three months, leaving the 25-year-old in a race against time to return this season.

Southampton survived his absence to see off Liverpool in their semi-final second leg win on Wednesday, with Jack Stephens putting in an excellent performance at Anfield alongside Maya Yoshida.

Asked after the game about Van Dijk’s injury, Puel said: ‘I think it’s important injury. He has to see another specialist in a few days and we will see in the next days.’

Van Dijk has been exceptional for Southampton since his £13million arrival from Celtic in 2015 and has emerged as a leading summer target for Manchester City.

EFL Cup final, Manchester United vs Southampton: what time is the final, what TV channel is it on and what are the odds?

Show/hide article…

Manchester City were the winners last season, beating Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on penalties.

The trophy proved to be Manuel Pellegrini’s last as manager of Manchester City as the Chilean made way for the incoming Pep Guardiola in July.

Manchester City’s back up goalkeeper Willy Caballero was the hero last year as the Spaniard saved three of the four Liverpool spot-kicks he faced to hand City victory following a tense penalty shootout.

This year Manchester United will look to ensure the trophy stays in Manchester, while Southampton - who shocked Liverpool in the semi-finals - will be hoping to pull off their first Cup triumph in over 40 years.

Man United reveal which kit they will be wearing against Southampton in EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

The club confirmed the news after narrowly progressing to the final in their white strip thanks to a 3-2 aggregate win over Hull tonight. Their 2-0 win in the first semi-final and a goal from Paul Pogba was enough to cancel out Tom Huddlestone and Oumar Niasse’s strikes at the KCOM Stadium.

“We can confirm we will wear our home kit in the #EFLCup final. #MUFC” They tweeted: “We can confirm we will wear our home kit in the #EFLCup final. #MUFC” It means Southampton will have to play in a changed kit as their red and white stripes would clash.

It will be good news for Red Devils followers who watched their side lift the FA Cup in a changed strip last season. The announcement also means United have been drawn as the home side for the showpiece final at Wembley on 26 February.

Jose Mourinho will be aiming for his first piece of major silverware after picking up the Community Shield in the summer. The EFL Cup is a competition he holds in high regard and the Portuguese won it in both spells as Chelsea boss.

Steven Davis says Southampton are better without £200m of talent they’ve sold

Show/hide article…

Southampton are a better team without the long list of stars who have been spirited away from the club in recent years.

That’s the view of skipper Steven Davis who inherited the armband after previous captain Jose Fonte became the latest in a long line of Saints’ best players to be snapped up for big money.

Yet despite that huge setback on the eve of the semi final, Saints produced a memorable display to dismiss Liverpool over the two legs of the semi, and midfielder Davis – who played a huge role in the win at Anfield – believes despite the big name departures, they are still growing as team.

The likes of Victor Wanyama, Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Nathaniel Clyne, Morgan Schneiderlin, Luke Shaw, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers have also been sold in the past three years.

That is an entire outfield team and almost £200m raised, and most clubs would be destroyed by such a selling regime, but Davis believes it has made them stronger.

“Getting to the final is huge, because it’s something we’ve been waiting for and needed for the past few years,” he explained.

“We have been progressing each year, getting better and waiting for that opportunity to show it. This is a fantastic achievement and we are delighted we have shown what we are about as a team.

“Now we’ve got that opportunity to create history. We can go there and enjoy the occasion and look forward to it.”

Meanwhile, the Saints insist a deal with Chinese investors worth up to £200 million will only go ahead if it is “in the best interests of the club.”

Lander Sports Development announced to the Shenzhen stock exchange yesterday morning they had agreed in principle to buy a stake in the club.

However Lander appear to have jumped the gun and Southampton insiders insist it still might not even happen.

One issue yet to be finalised is the size of stake available for purchase.

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr said: “Any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club.

“A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

“The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey.

“Together we have had many years of progression and success, and ensuring this continues is the main focus of any possible partnership.”

Why Southampton are so good at talentspotting

Show/hide article…

When Mauricio Pochettino arrived at Tottenham from Southampton in 2014, one of his first instructions to his staff was to keep an eye on players coming through at Southampton.

The Argentine had only been manager at St Mary’s for 16 months before moving to London but had seen enough to know the club were not short on talent.

‘He knew that he had left behind a club that had something brilliant developing at that level,’ a source close to Pochettino told Sportsmail on Thursday night.

Two and a half years on and Pochettino is busy at the top end of the Premier League but his old club are now preparing for an appearance in the EFL Cup final after Wednesday night’s semi-final victory over Liverpool.

Pochettino will recognise some of the names that have taken Claude Puel’s team to Wembley. Central defender Jack Stephens, 23 on Friday, was the star of the show on Merseyside and is known to Pochettino, as are Sam McQueen, 21, and Josh Sims, 19, who appeared among the substitutes.

As Southampton continue to see their talent picked off by bigger clubs, it is their ability to bring players through — and find them for good value elsewhere — that allows them to survive and prosper.

Since the summer of 2014, Southampton have sold 10 prominent players for £186million and lost two managers, Pochettino and his successor Ronald Koeman.

It is an astonishing story of resilience and they now have the chance to win their first major trophy since the FA Cup in 1976.

It will be interesting to see if Chinese investors in the process of buying a significant stake in the club attempt to interfere with a system that has worked so well. Southampton have always been innovative in terms of recruitment.

During his time at the club in the 1970s, Cup-winning manager Lawrie McMenemy established ‘satellite academies’ as far afield as Wales and the North East to identify talent. Gareth Bale eventually came through the club’s centre in Wales.

Forty years on and Southampton’s structure is rather different, the net cast across Europe, Africa and South America via the same scouting and analysis database systems available to all top clubs.

From this point of view, the Hampshire club are not doing anything other Premier League clubs aren’t but when it comes to identifying players and managers of the future, they are doing it a little better.

At the top of their recruitment structure is the rather unlikely figure of Les Reed.

The 64-year-old divides opinion in football. Twice technical director of the FA, Reed never played a first-class game and his only spell as a manager — at Charlton in 2006 — was a failure.

At Southampton, however, he was appointed head of football development in 2010 and has overseen a period of such success in terms of recruitment that he now has a place on the board.

In an interview with the BBC recently, Reed offered an insight into methods he believes have kept Southampton moving forward against a background of almost constant change.

‘When you are trying to unearth potential that can be turned into excellence, you need lots of information,’ Reed told the BBC. ‘Scouts can spot a player if they are looking at Gareth Bale. But to find a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, you need more detail.’

Mention of Hojbjerg is pertinent. The 21-year-old Danish midfielder was signed from Bayern Munich in the summer and was influential after replacing the injured James Ward-Prowse at Anfield. Also impressive on Wednesday were other notable recruits of recent years, Dusan Tadic and Oriol Romeu.

Players’ data, including injury history, academy backgrounds and playing statistics, are stored on a ‘black box’ database at the club that is fuelled and maintained by a staff of six analysts. It is restocked every month.

Romeu, now 25, had been monitored by Southampton since he was 19. By the time Victor Wanyama began to prevaricate on a new contract in 2015, Reed and his team knew enough about the Spaniard to recommend him to Koeman as the perfect replacement.

Romeu was signed for £5m and, a year later, Wanyama departed for Pochettino’s Tottenham for £6m more.

‘Succession planning is a major factor in business,’ said Reed. ‘You have to be ready.’

Manager Puel was recruited in similar fashion last summer. The Frenchman’s profile may have been low but he was in Southampton’s system, complete with a 40-page profile document, for a year before Koeman followed Pochettino out of the door.

Koeman, like his predecessor, knows all about Southampton’s quality. So too, now, does Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp. The Saints will be no pushover when they face Manchester United at Wembley but even if they don’t win the EFL Cup, the process will roll on.

Southampton chase loan deal for Spartak Moscow’s Serdar Tasci

Show/hide article…

Southampton have opened talks with Spartak Moscow over a loan deal for centre-back Serdar Tasci.

The 29-year-old former Germany international is ready to fly in this weekend.

Southampton are looking to cover the departure of Jose Fonte and the injured Virgil van Dijk who is out for three months.

Tasci’s most recent loan was to Bayern Munich from the Russian side who are currently five points clear at the summit of the Russian Premier League.

The German defender has pedigree having played 14 times for his country between 2008-10.

Tasci started his club career at Stuttgart where he spent eight years before moving on with a switch to Spartak.

He would offer Southampton an experienced option to the squad although Jack Stevens has handled himself admirably since being thrust into the Southampton line-up.

The young central defender helped his side to a clean sheet against Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final.

Despite Stevens’ performance it seems Claude Puel is looking to bolster the squad with some extra depth.

Holmes: Getting to Wembley means nothing if you lose

Show/hide article…

THE man who scored Saints’ last goal in a major final admits getting to Wembley means nothing if you lose.

Nick Holmes’ late volley in the 1979 League Cup final was soon followed by crushing disappointment as Saints lost 3-2 against Nottingham Forest, writes Simon Walter.

Forty-one years on, he is backing the class of 2017 to go one better by emulating their 1976 FA Cup final success against Manchester United.

“They were absolutely superb over the two legs against Liverpool, apart from a couple of little scares in the second half we out-played them,” said Holmes.

“But when you go to Wembley it’s all about winning the game so I was pleased to hear the manager say exactly that after the win at Anfield.

“Having won the FA Cup at Wembley a few years earlier, losing in ‘79 was the worst I’ve ever felt.

“It was one of those Suicide Sundays you sometimes get in football.”

Holmes, 62, is optimistic about Saints’ chances at Wembley.

“I went to the win against Leicester last Sunday and thought we were very good then as well,” he said.

“People say Leicester aren’t very good this season and they said the same about Liverpool but you can’t do any more than beat what’s put in front of you.

“It’s a shame Saints don’t get more credit. Leicester are still decent, they wouldn’t have done as well as they’ve done in the Champions League if they weren’t.

“Taking a decent percentage of our chances has been a problem all year, but defensively we’re as good as anyone despite having had problems with injuries all season.

“It was wonderful for the kid [Jack Stephens]. No-one wanted [Virgil] Van Dijk injured but he handled it. He’s played [Under-21] international football so was clearly ready for it. “Maya [Yoshida] was excellent too.

“We defended very well as a team. Jim Steele and Malcolm Waldron were a bit more exposed in ‘79 as they didn’t have a defensive midfielder like Oriol Romeu in front of them.

“Romeu’s been our most consistent player all season alongside Van Dijk. He’s done a terrific job sheltering the central defenders.

“He looks as sharp as a needle, his feet move exceptionally quickly and it was another excellent performance from him.

“He reads the game ever so well and always seems to get to the ball first. It was the same on Sunday.

“I’ve got to say Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic did their fair share of defensive duties too.”

Holmes was at Wembley for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final in 2010 and hopes to be back there on February 26.

“Now that Puel has seen how much it means to the fans and the players to get to Wembley, it will be interesting to see if he plays his best XI against Arsenal on Saturday,” he added.
