Manolo hopes to light up the ElClasicoast with more derby heroics

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini will be hoping to emulate his ‘Derby della Lanterna’ heroics by lighting up the ElClasicoast on Sunday.

Saints’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion will be Gabbiadini’s first derby for the club.

It takes him him back to his winning goal in the ‘Derby of the Lantern’ in September 2014.

He smiles as he recalls his fortuitous free kick for Sampdoria against Genoa, whose derby is named after their city’s lighthouse.

Gabbiadini’s 75th-minute free-kick, an inswinging left-footed cross from the right flank, crept in at the far post as Sampdoria beat their arch rivals 1-0 to win one of Italy’s most historic derbies at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the ground the clubs share.

Saints’ v Brighton & Hove Albion may be a far cry from that or indeed clashes against Pompey.

But the Seagulls have the potential to develop into regular adversaries following last season’s promotion to the Premier League.

“In the Premier League it doesn’t matter who you play,” said Gabbiadini.

“You could have been in the Premier League for 20 years or you could be newly-promoted.

“But whoever you come up against you need to play with your heart and you need to play with your head.”

The Italian striker also has a two-legged World Cup qualification play-off to look forward to against Sweden in a fortnight’s time.

But he is not letting that distract him as Saints prepare for Sunday’s big game.

“There are two very important games coming up, against Brighton and Burnley, only after them will I be able to think about Italy,” he said.

After beginning his Saints career with six goals in his first four appearances, Gabbiadini’s brace in the recent 2-2 with Newcastle United was a very welcome after one goal in 16 outings.

“Perhaps the opposition knows me more this season,” he continued. “That’s not to say last season was easy in any way.

“Last season was very difficult, but the most important thing is that I keep working and keep improving.”

Last week’s 1-0 win against West Brom was also very timely, with Sofiane Boufal’s sensational goal providing some momentum to take to the Amex.

“Both myself and team are in good form at the moment, we’re feeling ready and are just focused on getting three points on Sunday,” continued Gabbiadini.

“It’s a team game, if a striker scores it’s often from the good work of his teammates - the most important thing is we fight together and win together.

“The way the team’s playing is similar to last season, we have largely the same players and have made some very good additions in the transfer market.

Mauricio Pellegrino could be the next Prem manager in line for the sack

Show/hide article…

SOUTHAMPTON has been a conveyor belt for managers in the past few seasons.

They were hammered when they replaced Nigel Adkins for Mauricio Pochettino in January 2013 but the Argentinian justified the decision and excelled for 18 months before taking over at Tottenham.

Ronald Koeman was next in line and, again, did well during his two years in charge as he took them into Europe before jumping ship for Everton. After being sacked from Goodison Park, no doubt Koeman probably regrets it.

Frenchman Claude Puel had a strange year in charge last season, reaching and then unfortunately losing the League Cup final and then his reign rather petered out as they became dull and boring to watch.

Mauricio Pellegrino, 46, was in line for other jobs before getting Southampton but did not have the best CV, having started his coaching career alongside Rafa Benitez at Liverpool and then had mixed spells in charge of Valencia, Estudiantes, Independiente and Alaves.

Maybe the fact he was linked to Crystal Palace and also that he was another former Argentinian centre half and Pochettino was so successful that it tempted Southampton into taking what must be seen as something of a gamble.

This is an appointment that Southampton, who have made steady and impressive progression in the past four years, do not want to get wrong.

It stalled a little under Puel, below, the softly spoken Frenchman who could not find the right balance between attack and defence. It was a shock to no-one when he left after a year in charge.

Southampton are still struggling for goals at home under Pellegrino. They have managed just six goals in as many Premier League games at St Mary’s, all does not seem to be completely well among the players either.

Sofiane Boufal scored a late winner against West Brom last week, unhappy at being a periphery figure, the £16m forward made a point of going over to celebrate in front of Pellegrino. He was clearly making a point.

James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond made the England squad last season and now they regularly find themselves on the bench.

Midfielder Oriol Romeu, above, has been one of the most unsung players in the Premier League but there is a danger that he could begin to coast.

Is Pellegrino pushing Southampton’s players in training? Is he connecting with them on the training ground? Can he find the right blend to push Southampton forward again?

There seems to be genuine questions for a club not afraid to change managers but it only works with the right appointments. And Pellegrino must prove he is the right man.

Man United star drops huge hint he could join Premier League rivals

Show/hide article…

Luke Shaw has revealed he wants to play for Mauricio Pochettino again after opening up on his father/son relationship with the Spurs boss.

The Manchester United left-back is struggling for game time under Jose Mourinho and his latest comments have only added further fuel to the fire regarding the 22-year-old’s future.

Shaw’s revelation has come to light after he was asked to write in Guillem Balague’s new book: Brave New World: Inside Pochettino’s Spurs.

The defender only spent a season-and-a-half under Pochettino at Southampton, but the Argentine clearly left a lasting impression.

According to the Mail Online, Shaw writes in the book’s epilogue: "He used to call me his son, 'That’s how good our relationship was. I’ve had lots of ups and downs, but when I was with Pochettino it was only ever up, up, up.

"He made me feel that I was the best. He’d show me clips of my games and say, ‘You could do this better’. Not in a horrible way. Not I could have done better, but I should have done better, because he knows I can be better.

“I think with Southampton he achieved the impossible. We were one of the best footballing teams in the league… I do hope that I can play for him again one day. And I think he really wants me to play under him again.”
