Video: Foundation’s Vienna trip

Show/hide article…

Making up two teams to participate in the Euro and Champions Cups, this was a unique opportunity for players selected from the Foundation’s local Pan Disability League to test their skills abroad.

Both teams finished third in their respective groups that consisted of teams including AIK Stockholm, Bayer Leverkusen and eventual Champions Cup winners Austria Vienna.

In their 5th/6th placed play-off, the Euro squad narrowly lost out on penalties to Austrian side St. Pölton. In the other 5th/6th play-off, however, the Champions Cup team fought out a similarly competitive game against Ajax, coming from behind twice to eventually beat them on penalties 3-2.

Special mention also goes to Connor Steel, who picked up the ‘Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ award in the Euro Cup.

While the Foundation were delighted to be bringing home some silverware, more importantly they brought home an incredibly happy squad of players who did the club proud.

Saints line-up signing triple header

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski believes his Polish compatriot Jan Bednarek is a player you can “trust” ahead of his big move to St Mary’s.

The Ipswich Town shot stopper, who made 42 appearances for Saints between 2006 and 2012, reckons the highly rated central defender will be a hit at Saints in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is poised to make a 6m euro move from Lech Poznan, having flown in fresh from playing for Poland Under-21s at the European Championships to undergo a medical and agree terms of a contract at Saints.

The deal will make him the most expensive export from the Polish ranks in history.

The youngster arrives in England with a burgeoning reputation in his homeland, where he is known as one of the best talents in the country.

“For me Bednarek is second best defender in Polish league, behind Michal Pazdan [Legia Warsaw defender],” Bialkowski said.

“As a goalkeeper I’d like to play with player like him, because you can trust him and he’s also good in the air.”

Bednarek will become Saints’ first summer signing and the first of Mauricio Pellegrino’s reign at St Mary’s.

And it is set to be the start of a busy period at the club.

Saints plan to continue from there, with new contracts for Jack Stephens and Sam Gallagher understood to be in the pipeline.

Stephens was exceptional at centre-back next to Maya Yoshida after Jose Fonte’s January exit to West Ham and Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending injury, making 23 appearances in all competitions in a breakthrough campaign.

The former Plymouth Argyle man currently has until 2019 to run on his current deal, but after his performances is in line to be rewarded with an extension until 2022 and a considerable pay rise to go with it.

Meanwhile, as reported in the Daily Echo this week, following a fruitful season in the Championship with Blackburn, during which he scored 12 goals, striker Gallagher, 21, is set to extend his stay St Mary’s and fight for place in Pellegrino’s side.

Fellow frontman Jay Rodriguez, however, is edging towards a Saints exit, with West Bromwich Albion close to completing a deal said to be worth £12m.

Fights, poor turnouts, thrashings and other examples of football testimonials going badly

Show/hide article…

They’re supposed to be a fun way for fans to say goodbye, but sometimes testimonials don’t always go to plan.

David Seaman’s testimonial was a highly competitive affair

Seaman’s high profile match against Barcelona in 2001 made him £600,000 when 33,297 fans turned up at Highbury to see the Gunners lose 2-0. It was a competitive match, which included a punch-up between Lee Dixon and Boudewijn Zenden; the Barca man was substituted immediately afterwards. Seaman said it was unfortunate, but added: “to be fair, the Barcelona lad was a bit embarrassed and gave me a hug to apologise when he left the field.”

Nobody wants to say goodbye to Darren Wrack

Just 1,330 people turned up at Walsall for Darren Wrack’s testimonial in 2008 against Wolves. Wrack played more than 300 times for the club.

Bayern humiliate Cruyff and Ajax

Bayern hammered Johan Cruyff’s Ajax side 8-0 in a 1978 meeting in Amsterdam. Almost 30 years later Karl-Heinz Rummenigge apologised for the humiliation, but added the Bayern players were not treated well in the Netherlands suggesting this was the reason for the German side going at Ajax all guns blazing. Gerd Muller seemed pretty happy when he scored his first goal when he aimed a pumped fist at the home support in a game where Bayern also had three goals disallowed.

It all kicked off in Julian ‘Terminator’ Dicks’ farewell

A 17-man brawl broke out during Julian Dicks’ West Ham testimonial against Athletic Bilbao in 2000. Some hefty challenged from Nigel Winterburn and Igor Stamic led to fiery, over the top scenes, while referee Barry Knight ordered manager Harry Redknapp to substitute Paolo Di Canio, who was involved in a lot of the heated exchanges. Bilbao coach Txetxu Rojo was told to do the same with Joseba Etxeberria in a match they won 2-1. Dicks, though, earned around £200,000 to send him off into early retirement as a result of a knee injury.

Lundekvam was almost out of pocket for his testimonial

In 2008 Southampton were due to play Celtic, but Lundekvam had to spend £100,000 of his money to relay the St Mary’s pitch because a Bon Jovi gig the previous month meant there was not enough to time to reseed the pitch. Matt Le Tissier called on fans to pack out the stadium, saying: “Claus has sacrificed a lot of money to put the game on with Celtic and the thing with Claus is that he wants an opportunity to say goodbye to everybody.” In the end 19,000 fans turned up to see Saints win 2-0 and the player managed to recoup his money.

Peter Beardsley doesn’t get off to the best start at Newcastle

Newcastle bought Beardsley from Everton in a £1.5m deal in 1993, but he was out of action for six weeks having fractured his cheekbone in Ronnie Whelan’s testimonial. It happened when Beardsley collided with Neil Ruddock in the opening minutes of the game. Ruddock stayed on to score the only goal of the game in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against the Magpies.

Steven Caulker speaks of how addictions almost led him to suicide

Show/hide article…

Steven Caulker has revealed how a spiral of addiction and depression almost led him to suicide.

Caulker, 25, broke into the Tottenham team at a young age and was called up by England in 2012, scoring on his debut against Sweden, but the defender’s battles with alcohol and gambling have led to mental health issues and being signed off by current club QPR.

In an interview with The Guardian, Caulker recalls how gambling was his way of dealing with the pressure of being “chucked in the first team as a teenager”, leading to a cycle of self-destruction at the four Premier League clubs he has played for before one last big loss in December became all too much.

“I contemplated suicide a lot in that period,” Caulker told The Guardian. "A dark time. Everything I’d gone through in football, where had it taken me? All the guilt, the embarrassment, the shame, the public humiliation in the papers … and for what?

“I reckon I’ve lost 70 per cent of what I’ve earned. When you lose that amount of money, the guilt … that’s so many lives you could have changed. There was no escape, no way out, other than to ‘leave’.”

Caulker says current QPR boss Ian Holloway has urged him to stay at Loftus Road, where he still has one year remaining on his contract.

Spurs had sent Caulker to Sporting Chance in an attempt to tackle his demons earlier in his career, but anxiety over not being good enough led the centre-back to drinking problems and chairman Daniel Levy giving him an ultimatum to either clean up or leave.

Caulker’s problems continued at Cardiff, despite the help of then manager Malky Mackay, as well as at Southampton, Liverpool and QPR, and he believes football is still avoiding the issues he has faced.

“Football does not deal well with mental illness,” Caulker added. "Maybe it’s changing but the support mechanisms are so often not there.

“I’ve spoken to so many players who have been told to go to the Sporting Chance clinic and they’ve refused because they know, if they take time off, they’ll lose their place in the team. Someone steps in and does well, so you’re gone.”

Caulker has been training with the former league player Drewe Broughton at Goals centre in Hayes all summer.

The defender is adamant he “still has 10 years left in the game” and wants to show what he is “truly capable of”.

Southampton confirmed as 2017/18 Checkatrade Trophy participants

Show/hide article…

Saints are one of the Category One status Academies invited to pit their wits against 48 League One and League Two sides after the change in format last season.

Martin Hunter’s men reached the knockout stages of the competition in 2016/17, before losing out to Reading on penalties.

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: “I was delighted when EFL Clubs collectively backed the competition following a full and comprehensive review of last season’s pilot format and we can see from the increasing interest from Category One Academies that the Checkatrade Trophy has genuine appeal.

“The competition provides a unique challenge to young players and seasoned professionals alike. I strongly believe players from League One and League Two clubs will look forward to taking on some of the country’s brightest prospects, who will themselves learn a lot from participating in a first team competition."

Everton, Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham receive boost as Caen prepare to sell Yann Karamoh

Show/hide article…

Caen are ready to sell Everton, Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham target Yann Karamoh.

The 18-year-old broke into the first team last season and he impressed during his debut campaign with five goals in Ligue 1.

The striker’s form has attracted interest from England and Everton, Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham are all keen on signing him.

Caen naturally want to keep hold of Karamoh and they have offered him an extension on his current contract, which expires in a year.

However the France under-21 international has snubbed that proposal and, according to L’Equipe, he will now be sold.

Caen simply do not want to lose Karamoh for free in 12 months time and as a result they are ready to sell this summer to the highest bidder.
