Is he of the correct “assured quality” though?

He’s nearly 30 and will be on a shed load of wages. Bazza is going to cream his jeans.

Is he out of contract or how can we buy him when the window is closed?

If he is out of contract why is that? is he shite? and nobody else wants him?

i’m mostly worried bout the inevitable route 1 bombardment toward Ibrahimovic & Fellaini we will face in Cup Final, and I dunno that this 5ft 11" crock is the answer.

But I would sign him anyway. Fk it.

Definitely worth a punt if it is true. Worst case scenario he is shit and or never gets fit enough to play a single minute. On the basis that it isn’t my money paying his wages I say go for it.

If he passes a medical and the club doctors are able to confirm that he has two legs and a head then he will probably be better than what we currently have in his position.

He may be nearly 30 but that is still 3 years younger than Fonte. Plus the fact that the last Uruguayan we had proved to be an excellent signing so I say we are on to a winner here…

he’s free agent, cos he’s been injured for yr or so.

If it does nothing more than shut up the fan base, I will be happy

Assuming this dude is decent, will him as Fontes replacement and Gabbi mean that we have had a decent transfer window?

but he’s alright now, IIRC he was going to sign for the Grand Old Lady bu this wage demands sort of scuppered that.

Those people who wanted us to spend £5m extra on a player just because our situation changed are going to get their wish.

Like for like with Fonte, his wages will be what to Fontes? Panic buy absolutely but better than nothing.

Well… not quite @btripz ! That was regarding their preferred target of Fabian Schar allegedly. This is probably the best of a bad bunch or the footballing equivalent of fly fishing in a puddle.

So if we had paid the extra £5m at least we would have got a player who we actually wanted to start with. I am of the view that in this one instance we should have been able to write off a sizeable future profit margin for selling Schar and just accepted a smaller one when we sold him on. What right have we got to ‘win’ in these situations every time? It is arrogant of the club to not accept the occasional ‘bending over’. We sure as hell have done it to plenty of buying clubs over the years. By all means stick to your principles when you have the luxury of a prolonged summer window but when it is a case of ‘needs must’, swallow your pride, dig deep and pay the going rate.

Equally, we paid next to didly shit for Fonte 7 years ago and just sold him for close to ten times that fee. So that profit ought to count for something in these trying times.

Nobody will sufficiently convince me that this dude was “on our list” or that we have been “watching his progress for a considerable amount of time”. It is what it is though and don’t get me wrong, I advocate this if it happens. Something is better than nothing and he could turn out to be a great signing and a cup final hero.

He is a useful background player but I worry about how he performs in the cold.

@simon-says I hear what you say, but paying over the odds once sets a dangerous precedant.

Agents and clubs talk to each other, if we had paid the extra £5m you can bet that our next target would have a similar inlfation added to his fee. Next thing you know we’re paying Chelsea and Man United amounts for players that are really Crystal Palace or Sunderland worth!!

Re wages, he was apparently asking for too much from AC Milan, but the figures I saw in a Mail article were pretty low by Prem standards.

£25k ish.

I THINK their deal was structured on a pay per play basis. I’ll try to dig out the report.

EDIT: Wrong Milan club.

Here is that Mail article.

Caceres is said to have turned down a £4,000-a-week basic contract at Milan with a pay-per-play bonus of £21,000 a game.

Both Southampton and Sunderland are likely to be able to beat this contract given the financial clout of the Premier League.

Caceres is an experienced defender and made 110 appearances for Juve before being released by the club, scoring seven goals.

Perhaps but I would argue that it all boils down to the fact that we were desperate in this situation and people knew it. These were extraordinary circumstances though. What happened in January was the very reason that up until now we have not sold key players in January. We have been very quiet in bringing players in as well in the past few January windows. Austin the year before because his contract had 5 or 6 months to run and QPR wanted a fee. The year before we got Elia in on loan. The year before that we got that crock of old shit who never played for us (Foran was it?) and that is about it if I am not mistaken.

Clearly the club already try and avoid doing business in January because it is likely that you will be forced to pay a premium. The summer is completely different though.

Equally they usually try and sign the replacements before accepting offers for outgoing players. I am pretty sure that Fonte must have been a very disruptive little bitch behind the scenes for the club to let him go without a replacement and in doing so go against their usual policy. This is what I mean by extraordinary circumstances. At the end of the day, it was only the act of selling Fonte without having his replacement signed up before hand that put us in this situation. (and then VVD getting crocked only went and made the situation twice as bad) The club is in control of this (the selling part, not the injuries) going forwards so there is no reason to suspect that we would be setting a precendent. Lesson learned, just don’t do it again!

Chelsea, Utd, City etc get their pants pulled down over transfer fees mainly down to their huge publicly acknowledged revenues, ridiculous sponsorship deals and oil baron owners. Surely nobody wants to rip off our owner who only peddles a few JCB diggers every now and again?!

Anyway… has he signed yet??? I do hope this isn’t all a twitter wind up.
