Personal Challenge - Raising money for Southampton General Hospital

Right time for an update.

The 11 days in August I cycled a total of 152.69 miles (21st - 31st), that was an average of 13.88 miles per day.

The 30 days in September I cycled a total of 420.41 miles, which was an average of 14.01 miles per day.

The 31 days of october I cycled a total of 308.64 miles, which was an average of 9.96 miles per day. (Very low, but have to say was feeling very empty legged during the month of October (Getting tough). I also had kids illness, I was ill and have half term and Milan, so all in all not a good month.

This month has started ok, with 130.6 miles in the first 8 days, making an average of 16.33 miles. I completed at 48 miler in the freezing cold yesterday, with the help of Jelly Babies!!

So my TOTAL miles have just gone past 1,000, at 1,012.40 over 80 days at an average of 12.66 miles per day, with the target 11 per day!

On the away games from Southampton front I have been to the below away games on my bike, but got the train back, with the miles I have done. running total of miles.

Man U - 224.7 miles
Arsenal - 318.40 miles
West Ham - 438.60
Leicester - 585.60
Man City - 812.10

Next is Hull away, which I think I will give a miss :lou_facepalm_2:. I need another 59.4 miles to get to Hull, which I should do by the end of Sunday. Then it is on to Palace away 3rd December, which I will get to before the game, then Stoke a further 183.2 miles 14th December.

All fun, but it is getting very tough!

Great stuff… sadly fucked up and am heaveier again… :lou_angry: :lou_sad:

Tell you what, when I started cycling regularly again 6 years ago, I found it much easier, to do 40 miles and lose weight. Of course when you are 16.8 stone you are going to lose it quickly at first, if diet and excecise, but at 14.10 it kind of got stuck and is fecking hard. I bet I can put it back on over Christmas very easily!

Is 3 months really. Started the diet before the cycling. 2 weeks earlier, then went camping for a week. So started around 8th August, but they cycling 21st (well the challenge) still over 2 stone in 3 months and still eating proper smaller meals every day. Home made chicken curry and rice tonight.

Well here we are over 2 months on, with a fattening up Christmas period and less cycling, I am right back on it over the last 7 days. Just done another 33 miler this morning, did a light 10 miler over the weekend and 34 last Thursday, which makes my 77 miles that I needed per week from the off, but with tomorrow to spare, i am going to do another 30.

Today is the 150th day of the challenge and I have done 1,630.86 miles in that time, but my average has slightly dipped below the 11 miles per day, that I require at 10.87 miles per day. I am happy with this as I thought it would get much lower over the Christmas and New Year period. Once I get to March, the rides will become easier and more enjoyable again.

My weight, well, that dropped to 14 stone 2, then just over a week ago was 14.8, now back at 14.6. The diet is back on and the cycling is refocused.

There is also a challenge within a challenge coming up, which I am hoping some of you guys will get involved with. I will reveil more at a later date in January.

All good and still hoping to hit 13 stone and the 4,000 miles by August 20th!

Just got the Strava app, so if any of you want to PM me your names, if you use it. You can find me under Kevin Sim.

Well you can track my progress from day 151 of my year challenge anyways. Got a Garmin for Christmas so linking everything and moving away from Cyclemeter.

Cheers

Why can’t you just write stuff down like we did in the olden days?..

Oh I still do this as well.

Serious question, could be be over doing it? I seem to be ill again, temperature, aching, feeling tired. Now I do not normally get ill, but all a little frustrating as I cannot seem to get a sequence of cycles together. Had lots of bike problems, now ill again.

Could I be run down? FFS!

Hello there. Looking at your distances and pace, would suggest you should be safe in the base mile zone. Key is not to try and beat records but slowly up the mileage in the week. I try and have two rest days a week (more in winter/ when screwed by work) Mon Rest, the 20k, we’d 20k, Thursday 25k, fri Rest sat 30k on then the big ride on Sun 70k max in winter, lot longer in summer. ( means 630am starts or earlier to fit in with fa,ily needs etc)

i suspect you are literally under the weather… Chills from getting wet, cold etc not the distance or pace, but as soon as you have a old or feel ill, stop exercising as it will only worsen your immune system and the cold wil linger… And linger etc… Rest means rest not slowing down or riding a shorter distance.

have a proper rest, then catch up when better…or it will just demoralise you!

PS. Are you North, or Am I thinking of someone else? If so we could meet for a ride in the Scottish Borders one Sat or Sun if you fancy it.?

Yes, just feel I am slipping behind. I only have a mountain bike, not a road bike, so I think the pace is pretty good to what it has been. It is not that I push myself, sometimes I feel good and it is just natural pace.

Yep, I am in Carlisle on the boarder city. You might fly off on your road bike!

Personal question, but how tall are you? Could lend you a roadie dark side machine  My MTB is form 1996 and is a bit of a garage queen now being all ‘retro/vintage’

I am 6 foot. I have had a road bike and cannot stand them! I like the more upright ride and seeing stuff as I cycle rather than head down for speed. I will stick with the mountain bike.

After all the aches clearing up yesterday, a headache down one side, including behind eye, ear and jaw, as making me feel sick on and off. Good job I got to the doctors today, I have a severe inner and outer ear infection! Still hoping to be cycling by Monday!

Well the wheels come off this challenge in January, then again in Feb and March. Bike issues and other issues meaning I was not able to get the bike fixed, as I needed to prioritise my spending.

It is only now I am looking to get back on my bike, but after what I have said above, I am going back to a road bike. I will be keeping my mountain bike for cycling with family, but after becoming friends with a mad keen neighbour road bike cyclist and the fact I was finding the hills tough up here on a mountain bike, I thought that a road bike was the way forward.

So from 21st August I am going to try and cycle the 4015 miles and more. I have a Rose road bike and have kitted myself out with all the new gear. I plan on cycling from one end of the country to the other in 2019.

But hey first things first, put the disappointment of the challenge from the last year (which started so well for 5 months) behind me and blow it out of the water 2017/18!

Massive respect, just be careful with your health mate.
