Quique Flores has no issue with Ronald Koeman - despite taking his Valencia job

Expand article…

Watford boss Quique Flores holds no grudges against Ronald Koeman - the man who took his job at Valencia.

Flores goes head-to-head with Koeman for the first time when the Dutchman brings his Southampton side to Vicarage Road on Sunday.

Valencia axed Flores back in 2007 and Koeman was installed in the hot-seat just four days later.

At the time there were claims then PSV Eindhoven manager Koeman had been lined up to take Flores’ job before he had even been dismissed.

But Flores said: "We respect all the managers in the world. Football is like this. I respect the career of Koeman as a player and a coach.

Replacement: Koeman took over from Flores at Valencia

"I played against him when he was at Barcelona. It’s a good experience to come up against him. I don’t think how his work was at Valencia. I look at how he does his work now.

"That’s the important thing for me.

“How he is working in the Premier League and Europa League - that is only interesting to me.”

Premier League new boys Watford have picked up two points from their opening two games.

Flores wants to break their duck against the Saints and said: “We want to get our first win. We are ready to get off the mark.”

Meanwhile, Flores has dismissed reports linking Liverpool outcast Mario Balotelli with a move.

Flores added: “We haven’t talked for any moment about Mario. It’s more a possibility for the media than for the club. We have had no conversation.”

Another draw I think for Watford. I wish we were not playing them away this early on in the season, but they will feel they can get points from this, without a doubt!

Anybody else on here going to the match?

I’m playing for Southampton IFC team in the morning (ooh, SaintsWeb traitor in the midst) and then heading over to the game.

I have never been to Watford on purpose, and won’t be going this year. In other quirky places-I-won’t-go-to news, Scunthorpe is also banned due to Southampton being immortalised in Tinie Tempah’s song.

And yes, you can say Scunthorpe here. No swear filter.

I have been to Watford once, in the cup and we were woeful. I think we lost 5-1 or something. I have also been to Scunthorpe when we had Peason in charge and we managed a triumphant 1-1 draw. This was how bad it got, we celebrated like it was a win!

The car park at Scunthorpe was right next to the turnstile and cosy £2. Also a couple of minutes away a KFC. I celebrated these facts as well.

The he best game against Watford, which was kind of away Villa Park semi final 2003… What a fucking day and night that was!

Watford boss hoping to get season up and running against Southampton

Flores, who guided Atletico to victory over Roy Hodgson’s Fulham, said: "I have a happy experience of the competition but it was a little bit different because we were not good in the domestic league and we focused on the Europa League.

Flores has fond memories of the much-maligned competition after winning the trophy with Atletico Madrid in 2010, but history has shown clubs such as Tottenham, Swansea and Everton see their domestic form fall away due to their involvement - and tomorrow’s visitors Southampton, who played out a 1-1 draw with Midtjylland on Thursday, will fear joining them.

“It’s very difficult for teams to be focused on two different competitions when they play in both those competitions in a week. For English teams it’s different because they use a lot of energy in every single match. Recovery between matches is not easy. Sometimes when you have to play against a hard team, recovery is not the same.”

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is looking for his first win of the season after opening the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle, before losing 3-0 to Everton last Saturday. And on Thursday night they were held to a 1-1 draw in the opening leg of the Europa League play-off against FC Midtjylland.

“Of course after the defeat against Everton we need a win. We know that,” said Koeman. “A win gives confidence to the players. Sometimes you don’t want to put too much pressure on winning but the best is to learn about mistakes.”

Flores suggesting that Watford can capitalise on our exertions in Europa.

Southampton in Europa…

Sorry just came into my head.

Hey Big Victor!

What’s the score with this and telly, then? Is it on?

Stek

Cedric, Yoshida, Fonte, Caulker, Targett

Romeu, Davis, Wanyama

Mane, Pelle

Nope. We are not on TV. Just a regular Sunday kick off.

Mane off (head injury I think) Long coming on.

Balls. Come on Long!

Sportsmania is bollox at the moment. Starting to get on my nerves.

Oh come on Saints!!..Don’t you know how much I need this?? :grimacing:

Finally, Saints starting to look much more cohesive.

0-0 Poor game with few chances. Clean sheet though.

We looked improved…but against Watford.

Shit, I’ll take any away draw. At least I’m not suicidal after that. A huge meh, really.

Romeu looked pretty decent. Caulker not bad, I need a nap.

Oh yeah, time to give Jumanji a run out IMO

I was watching that match while trying to update the wife’s hard drives to Windows 10…It’s hard to say which experience dissapointed me the most. At least the update job still has the possibility of a win I suppose.

Life? Don’t talk to me about life.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman:

"We played a little bit different than the first two games because we had to be defensively better. In my opinion, it always starts at the back and at least we had our first clean sheet of the season.

“One of the key points of last season was that we had a strong defensive organisation.”

Southampton’s Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama have been linked with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham respectively but Koeman added: "We know have to deal with speculation over our players.

“Again, no-one is for sale. Everyone stays at Southampton. We want to bring in another defender.”
