It’s nor technically Liverpool. More like Waterside is to Southampton. However, the city will attract the negative headlines regardless.

This is the second Merseyside officer to have lost his life in the last couple of years. The other chap died after being fatally injured in an off-duty altercation.

A mate of mine is from Liverpool. I used to work with him, he is now in the Hertfordshire police after moving from accounts, in 2006. He transferred to the Merseyside police a few years back, but transferred back after 6 months to Hertfordshire and leafy Royston Town, as in his words ‘it was horrendous in the force up there’. He grew up in the Wirral and moved south at 21, but could not hack it back in his home force, as it was that bad! Not the force, but how they are treated!

I am not impressed with policing in general up here. The situation hasn’t been helped by the independent police commissioner installed for Merseyside, which has politicised policing and made it a headlines-driven business. The Liverpool Echo always carries stories of cannabis drug farm busts, etc. Worse, they sensationalise their victories so much as to actually be counterproductive. A recent newspaper article detailed the amount of contraband seized; I think they valued each individual cannabis plant at six fucking grand. Six grand! Now, if you’re on the bones of your arse and the Old Bill are telling you that weed plants are going for six grand a go, that’s going to be pretty tempting isn’t it?

There’s a load of bleating about cuts to budgets, etc, but at the same time, the force spent money to keep at least eight officers stood outside the old Bank of England building 24/7 when it was being occupied by anti-homeless protestors.

In the meantime, all the crimes that Liverpool did well to avoid, such as violence and sex attacks, are going up, and this is despite having a branded serious crimes unit.

Terrible shame about the officer that lost his life. Hopefully, they’ll alter their operational procedure and get their officers out of harm’s way when deploying the countermeasures.
