Radiohead?

Just watching their Glastonbury set. A band who have fulfilled their potential or disappeared up their collective arse holes?

Discuss.

Fuck it. I for one will just give the Radiohead fans what they want.

Eh-hem

Iā€™m just too unsophisticated and musically tasteless to ā€˜getā€™ Radiohead. Iā€™m not on your level.

There you go.

They have made some awesome music. They have also made some music that I could make. Either that makes them flawed or me a musical genius.

My partner is a massive fan of the band. I am not. I likes some of the earlier stuff and their last album and maybe a few songs on the ones inbetween. Iā€™ve seen them about 4 times. The first half of the glastonbury set I was near the back looking at my phone with some background music on. The later half I tuned in a little more.

What I respect about Radiohead is their musical integrity. They play what they want to play. You take them or leave them on your own terms.

Liked the earlier stuff, then respected their innovation whilst not liking everything they did, then eventually stopped listening to new albums.

i remember seeing the video to Just for the first time and loved it and the song. The Bends is a fantastic album.

Never been the same since Damian Albern left

Being away I completely missed their ā€œprimeā€ and for me no.

Seems some of my mates in the same group after Glasto.

Itā€™s a taste thing rI hate spaghetti & chicken nuggets & Gin. But can understand some people like those things dutto Radiohead.

Luckily we listened to and enjoyed Clean Bandit that night so didnā€™t lose 2 hours of our lives

Oh and I donā€™t like Kasabian but do like Coldplay

Is there anything that youā€™re not bitter and angry about? Just a simple post about a band and you have to act like a complete cock.

Being multi millionaires from years gone by by writing great albums help that creative spark, I think theyā€™re middle class pretentious bells who made good stuff long before the iphone was thought of.

Shame they didnā€™t find fame earlier.

They would have been bang up for Mike Gattingā€™s rebel tour of South Africa.

Iā€™m surprised Eavis hasnā€™t done one over there to be honest, a bit more coin in the war chest.

The Bendsā€¦fuckinā€™ magnificent.

OK Computerā€¦OKā€¦great in parts.

the rest Meh.

Iā€™d love them to be as good as they were. I appreciate they feel the need to move on and evolve.

Iā€™d love to love their later stuff but I struggle.

Radiohead = genius ā€¦ imho

Never got them tbf. Mrs C_S does though but I allow her one or two lapses in taste*

*Just realised that sounds sexist, so to put the record straight, she allows me many, many many more lapses in taste

Personally, i always liked Pablo Honey the most. Never listened to them after OK computer, but 3 albums in is generally when i get bored of bands.

For those that like to moan about others taste, i think ā€œno surprisesā€ is the song for you :lou_smiley:

Havenā€™t heard everything theyā€™ve ever done, but hereā€™s my top 5 Radiohead songs;

  1. Codex - Beautiful song and I sometimes listen to it when Iā€™m feeling the feels and it somehow manages to cheer me up.

  2. Paranoid android - Made me pay attention to Radiohead in the first place, love the video and itā€™s like 3 songs for the price of one.

  3. Lotus flower - The song I like to singalong to the most.

  4. Black swan - Not technically Radiohead but itā€™s my list so there. Only heard it because it was on the sountrack of a film I like.

  1. Pyramid song - On another day this might be number one.

Pound for pound the best, most consistent band of my life time.

Never worried about trying something different and a little advant garde without being ridiculous. Iā€™ve always found their material to be pretty accessible and have enjoyed most of their output (King of Limbs was probably their low point).

I think their album which I have listened to most is probably Amensiac. It got played in full on Late Junction on Radio 3 when it came out which, I guess, says something both about the direction Radiohead were taking and the direction in which Radio 3 were going.

For me theyā€™ve managed to tread that line between being both accessible and experimental - few other bands/artists managed to pull that off.

I sat through the whole set last night and there was a lot of the material I didnt know, but then, like many here, I kind of gave up on them after OK Computer. Mrs SOG wasnt impressed with the more recent material but I will probably give it a listen at some point as there were a few things in the set which sounded like they warranted further investigation. What I like about Radiohead is that they follow their own path and arent just looking to replicate a winning formula. Its not the way to commercial success but they seem to have successfully maanged to tread the path between artist integrity and keeping a large chunk of their fan base happy. Most headline acts go to events like this and trot out a greatest hits package. Radiohead could have cherry picked from their first 3 albums and cleaned up. Nice to see an established band being ā€œedgy.ā€

This seems a fun way to live.
