šŸ» Real Ale / Lager / Cider or Spirits?

So whatā€™s everyones tipple of choice?..on the whole Iā€™ll drink Stella or San Miguel, but Iā€™m also partial to a nice real ale occassionallyā€¦a pint of Dirty Tackle is absolute heaven. Spiced rum all the way for me if I fancy a shortā€¦preferably Sailor Jerry or Lambs with coke, ice and a couple of slices of lime.

I donā€™t really drink cider these days, although I think it was the alcopop of our age.

I drink lager more than anything else; San Miguel, Red Stripe or Heineken. Donā€™t mind Becks.

Real ale is something Iā€™ve been drinking a lot more of lately. I donā€™t mind the bottled stuff you get in supermarkets, but after having spent some time drinking the produce of microbreweries in the US, Iā€™m with the Americans on warm or cold. Sacrilege, I know.

Rum would be my spirit. Goslings or The Kraken, depending on whether I go spiced. Ginger ale, bitter lemon or coke all go well.

Also partial to the odd white Russian, but got to be stacked with ice and cream.

General rule is:

Ale shandy midweek (canā€™t handle being hungover at work), though sometimes I have an ale top when Iā€™m feeling particularly wild.

If out with friends who know their ale - Iā€™m having whatever youā€™re having.

If out with friends who arenā€™t ale drinkers, Iā€™ll order whatever I recognise and probably not notice the difference.

Hard day at work/ man trouble / debrief with female friends - red wine.

On a date, attempting to appear feminine, but not wanting to get drunk - white wine spritzer

Saturday night, know itā€™s gonna be a late one and too lame to stay awake - JD and coke

Out with girlfriends, glammed up in dress and heels - cocktails.

Thatā€™s the rules.

Real Ale but I tend to stick to the lower ABV stuff.

Rum on its own. I donā€™t mind spiced but I prefer it to be non spiced i.e. Lambā€™s Navy.

Iā€™m a cider drinker myself, although I will occasionally have a beer. Maverick, I know.

For a short iā€™ll have a vodka + lemonade or vodka + cranberry. Or a Jagerbomb if that counts!

Beers - ales / IPAs

cider- on your bike

spirits- usually give me killer hangovers even if if i only drink a small amount, however macellen, remy XO, mount Gay 1703 usually does the trick

wine- my passion, particular favourite regions Ribero del duero, margeret river, Bordeaux, Galicia. Also a big fan of sherry (not the Bristol cream variety)

What ever is on offer.

Student life!

I met up with some friends I hadnā€™t seen for years the other Saturday. We started at 1 in the afternoon in the Grapes and finished at about 1.30am in the London Hotel. I started on the Doombar but after 6 pints started to feel quite sickā€¦after a food break at Pizza Express it was lager and spiced rum for the rest of the nightā€¦it took me two days to recover, but it was well worth it!

I canā€™t drink Thai whisky/rum. That story involves one flip flop, a Japanese tv commercial and a pool playing ladyboy.

Otherwise itā€™s all good

Good thread Brian.

I donā€™t actually drink that frequently, but when I do I tend to go for the effect.

I love a pint of Aspall Suffolk Cyder if I can find it, but if Iā€™m feeling wreckless Iā€™ll start with Strongbow and move to Staropramen.

Will normally end the evening with a nice drop of scotch.

Mostly drink a cheeky glass of red wine to take the edge off the day, or whilst Iā€™m burning meat outside.

On the ale front, I do enjoy an Old Thumper - although a number of the Cocks for Lou club gave me the opportunity to develop a taste for Dublin Porter when I was stood up at theā€¦

I never got the hang of wine, no matter how much I wanted to like it, my taste buds just werenā€™t thinking along the same lines. I thought maybe it was an age thing and Iā€™d grow to like it, but now Iā€™m nearly 50 Iā€™ve come to the conclusion that it ainā€™t ever gonna happen.

Have they still got Knob on tap at the London?

It always makes me smile when I ask for a Knob in there.

No problem, Lou.

Iā€™m over it, or at least my therapist says I soon will be.

Maybe we should all turn up un-announced at the butlerā€™s gaff to make up for it?

God I miss proper Real Ale. When Iā€™m home itā€™s 6X or Doombar. Over here in the last 3 or 4 years we can now get London Pride, Pedigree or Hobgoblin on ā€œonly slightly pressurisedā€ tap. We have a place out in the desert that had a range of about 20 bottled Ales but had run out on my last visit.

Beer at home is OSH canned or Tsing Tao, a nice light clean lager (and the cheapest we can get here in cans)

God I miss wine with a meal in a restaurant. We can get wine from 5 quid a bottle up to 500 quid in the desert or +30% tax and +30% profit in a licence holder only shop in town. BUT when you go out for dinner they charge you 50 quid for a 5 quid bottle of skank so sod that. We eat at home!

Evening drink is Bacardi & Coke Vodka Orange or Red Bull havenā€™t had a Bullfrog for at least 6 months - price went up to about 10 quid sod that.

One drink I have learnt to love is Polish Vodka. Iā€™ll post a review on that and how to drink it properly tomorrow when the golf isnā€™t on telly.

It may have been a promotional guest ale but they had it in there the last time I went. I canā€™t remember what match it was but me and Mrs S popped in after the game and were watching the England v France rugby match. I was stood at the bar with an empty glass when the barman asked what I wanted. I was very involved in the rugby and said without thinking, ā€œIā€™d like another knob, pleaseā€ to which he replied, ā€œweā€™ve run out of knobā€, to which I replied, ā€œokay, Iā€™ll have a hobgoblinā€. Mrs S pissed herself laughing

Start with Ale (less gassy than larger), then move on to spirits. Dark Rum or gin and tonic!

Ha!, dodgy thing to say in the Londonā€¦I wonder if any pub has sold Dirty Tackle and Knob at the same time?
