Religion

…So, does anyone on here follow a religion of any type?

Personally, I don’t, although I am currently attending church (and probably will do for the forseeable future) at our local CofE as I think they promote a good course of living for my daughter, and (I believe) set a good example of how to live your life.

I certainly don’t have any problem with religion though, in it’s baser guises of helping those who are in need, and also giving people piece of mind in situations of grief and despair.

nope - Baptised as Cof E but only go to church now for christianing weddings and funerals

Got sent to sunday school as a kid but was asked to leave for be too disruptive.

Ahem

We did a “Sotonians position on” on the subject a while ago.

The site should autoload threads with similar content. Let me know if this isn’t happening.

It’s a tough one. I believe that God made me srs, but I can’t really picture Him making all you cunts.

Chertsey, if you don’t believe but think it helps your daughter understand and be a more rounded person can i suggest you try some of the others as well. Can be very enlightening. Sikh temples are very open and welcoming places for instance.

Otherwise it just seems your doing it to get her in a certain school(understand this can be important and i could be completely wrong).

I don’t think it did I’m afraid…

No, I went to Sunday School and church when young, and also attended Boys Brigade until about 10. Just think it’s a good thing for her to so (a few of her friends from nursery go).

Now, if I was to go Catholic then that would be to get her into a certain school…

CofE, should have been a Catholic due to heritage, I would love to have faith and in that statement says it all.

It a load of controlling bollocks, if there is a God why is life for the vast majority so deeply unfair, God is a fashion and one that is dying out, we will laugh at ourselves in 5000 years time saying what were they doing? Did they think it would stop them getting cancers or keeping them safe?

It’s only controlling if you let it be though? I think you have a very negative view on something that does so much good for the vast majority of people.

ok, sounds sensible. I was brought up and completely schooled Catholic(probably explains things). I don’t believe, but would’ve been happy for my daughter to go to a religious school, as they are generally stricter and better funded, with absolutely no hope of ever making her a believer. She has looked into all the major religions and dismissed them all.

Show your daughter the others. It’s educational and they’ve all got some pretty fucking far out stories to tell.

Currently reading The Second Coming by John Niven (fantastic author - more of that on the book thread when I’m done).

God is a weed smoker, likes a drink, swears like a trouper and runs heaven like a friendly boss.

God goes off on a fishing holiday for a week, but unfortunately, one celestial week is 500 years in earth time. He left during the renaissance period and all was great, but he came back to 20th century wars and hatred and divisions in Christianity.

He blames all the problems on earth on Moses, claiming that he gave him just two words to share “Be Nice” and that he built up his part to 10 commandments.

Those two words “Be Nice” seem to sum up the life philosophy of most of the Christians that I know.

But Christianity isn’t essential for this. I try to live my life by that credo too.

Its a long story and needs way more time than this thread but i used to be a fervent 200% non-believer. Was happy to loudly argue with any believers at parties etc. Met a christian woman; did not change me and we had a non-religious wedding in a registry office. (Dont get me started on non believers who have church weddings).

A few years later and some difficult personal circumstances led me to attend church, to just find out more. The Vicar was a former builder and we hit it off. Went for beers with him a few times. I eventually attended an Alpha course and changed my views completely. Until you attempt to find out, you dont have any idea what misconceptions you have but for most people its tons.

A year later i was leading a Y course (similar to Alpha but better IMO) attempting to explain belief to others. Frankly amazing.

I attended my local church regularly. My christian wife was so happy about this that she cheated on me and we divorced. That hit my views quite a bit.

Fast forward 9 years and i have not been to church for a long time but i still believe. Have never tried to convince anyone and never will but happy to say it has been a great source of comfort to me in various times.

Did they mention at all how G feels about bros jacking it? I think I’m in good shape generally, in terms of the unblemished beauty of my eternal soul, but if Angel Gabriel makes a note in my case file everytime I jack it, I am in for a v.long & embarrassing interview at Pearly Gates srs.

Everytime you do it you lose part of you immortal soul. Once you hit a certain number, you’re on the down escalator…

Are Alpha courses the ones which culminate in people lettling a bunch of complete strangers know their innermost thoughts at the end, or am I thinking of something different?

The church people I used to work for belonged to a charismatic church, and were into all that. It was the last step for new recruits before they started donating 10% of their income forever.

By telling them a lie? It gives comfort when its the only hope, that is our collective fault as people, of course it is controlling, for a start you have to adhere to rules stated by the denomination if you take a pick and mix approach then you are n’t really playing the game, most do that to be fair.

My first fiance was a devout church goer (before we met) with an evangeiical denomination and basically it boils down how much you can put in a month, Jesus saves the weak, dying, skint and desperate.Don’t get me wrong the faithful are a superb wondeful kind people but that doesn’t alter the fact they are supporting thin air. We split up and now she is married and back in the church, nice girl as well.

And don’t get me started about Muhammed flying on a winged horse to heaven.

Let it give comfort about the unknowing, but when you’re asleep is what its like when you’re dead the end.

For me I beleive in god but not in any of the standard religions, and do not beleive in the institutionalisation of religion as that’s when wars start.

Other than that i think all religions are a good thing as they all teach you to respect and look after your fellow man/woman.

Not sure what that is, but no its not how Alpha goes at all. The Y course is less well known but tackles all the basic questions in a more down to earth kind of way.
