Sad news. Father Ted is one of my favourite comedy shows of all time. I’ve seen it tons of times, and have watched it with my kids, also big fans. The first comedy show since Spitting Image that wasn’t on BBC, and was genuinely good.

Feck, Arse, Drink!

Great series, wonderful character - just Dougal and Mrs Doyle left.

I’ve listened to the DVD commentaries (yes, I am that dude) and it’s a fascinating insight into how comedy gets made. The writers sound almost guilty when discussing the character of Dougal, acknowledging that a dim character is an easy source of comedy. I also love the way that it sticks to a set of rules. Everyone on Craggy Island is hatstand, everyone else slightly less so.

Some didn’t really get that aspect of the show, and accused it of being racist or at least perpetuating stereotypes about the Irish being lazy or stupid or whatever - which I reckon fall way wide of the mark. It’s the best show to come out of Ireland, imo - an assured piece of work with the self-confidence to take the piss out of itself. I can’t think of a better advert for the country.

A couple of videos. First up, we’ve got Americans watching Father Ted.

Next, one of my favourite Father Jack scenes. He loves his brick.

Great actor. Strangely Dermot Morgan, Father Ted died 18 years ago today :frowning:

After watching the 1st episode in 1995, we named our pub quiz team “Feck”.

Have used it ever since.

Father Ted is a work of barely paralleled genius. Watched soe episodes last night for the tribute and was almost crying laughing.

There are only a few programmes produced where the casting is perfect, where each actor brings their best performance and there are no weakness’

Even the bit part actors were fantastic - Graham Norton was sublime in the cameos he made.

My Lovely Horse and the whole eurovision episode if probably my favourite but I struggle to pick one to be honest. ‘Down with this sort of thing’ as well

Bizzare that he died on the same day as Ted

RIP Frank - you were part of something very very special
