RIP Lemmy

This is always well worth a watch anyway, but here’s the Lemmy of 30 years ago explaining metal in The Decline of Western Civilization Part II : The Metal Years.

I was reading that he only got his cancer diagnosis on Boxing Day.

Sad news. Always partial to a bit or Motorhead (and Hawkwind for that matter).

Think everyone needs to have a few drinks to celebrate his life. RIP Lemmy, heaven just got a whole lot fucking louder.

He was one of rock’s great characters, music would be a much poorer place if he hadn’t existed.

Lived fast, died quite old.

RIP Lemmy

This record formed part of the backdrop to my early teenage years

This was probably my first intro to the man.

Just been chatting with mother dearest about it. Really not fucking bad going. A career that lasted six decades, genuine warmth felt for the bloke from many quarters, probably got fucked every single day of his life; checks out at 70.

In this age of increasing life expectancy, you can’t really call 70 a hugely long life, but Keith Richards excepted, that’s an eternity for a rock star with rock star habits.

Very very sad. Metal legend RIP.

You know I’m born to lose and gambling’s for fools
But that’s the way I like it, baby
I don’t wanna live for ever
And don’t forget the joker!

‘Killed By Death’, indeed.

Although I expect he gave Death a fair hiding in the process. And they’re probably sat chuckling about it over a bottle of JD now.

Spot on!!!

Absolutely stunned he made it to 70.

From wiki “Lemmy was well known for his lifelong large intake of alcohol. In the documentary Live Fast Die Old, it was revealed that he drank a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day and had done so since he was 30 years old.[29] In 2013, Lemmy stopped drinking Jack Daniel’s for health reason”

Thats 13870 bottles folks.

Great rocker. RIP

I know this may seem insensitive so close to the time, but is anyone else secretly hoping that Lemmy got his diagnosis, thought “fuck it” and literally went on the bender to end all benders?

I would like to think that is not to far off the mark.

Not sure you can be insensitive with Lemmy, he never indicated any fear of death, he challenged death every day with his lifestyle and may well have gone overboard at the end.

Given the character, thought I was on okay ground. It was one of the first things that came up during a discussion with mama.

Still, considering the man used to be Jimi Hendrix’ roadie, one of the many rock stars in the 27 club, he did bloody well and never seemed to let up.

Not sure he was that flush toward the end of his life. He moved out to LA a few years ago; reports suggested that only had a small apartment. He didn’t give a fuck though; he was living in LA

As a fan of The Nice and ELP in the 60s and 70s I remember a story that Keith Emerson told about him. Keith used to stab the keyboard with a knife (dont ask me why, Townshend said something at the time about destructive art so it could be a part of trashing your instruments thing) and Lemmy was one of their roadcrew. He said to Keith one day “If you are going to do it, do it properly” and gave Keith two Hitler Youth knives which he used for many years thereafter on stage.

I think there are a group of old (and many English) musos who live around the Santa Monica area. Keith Emerson is one. They often jam together in the local bars and Keith made reference a place called The Rainbow in his farewell to Lemmy.

I would of liked to have lived his life!

Without a doubt the loudest gig I have been too. I am sure I also worked a gig or two of Motorhead. I went to see Motorhead at the guildhall with a friend of mine. She had previously met him back stage another time and has a great picture of them. I’d share it if I knew how to share from Instagram.
