Sad but we already knew this didn't we?

The sad bit is the iman won’t condemn homophobia in the bottom paragraph, there is the issue right there.

I don’t know why I’m biting, but…why have you ignored the whole section about the Sikh man and focussed on the Muslim?

But he’s supportive of homosexuals Barry, isn’t he? Have I missed something in the last 2 paragraphs? (I think that he meant forced rather than forged - or there’s a BBC typo) :

Blackburn-based imam Saleem Sedat said homosexual people should be treated with respect and humanity.

“Islam is categorically against forged marriage,” he said. “What’s important is that we’re sensitive towards the concerns of young people including when it comes to matters of sexuality and that we provide them with the necessary support and care they require to grow and become healthy members of society.”

He doesn’t say who is going to provide it?
He could have said he condemns all homophobia behaviour and attitudes towards gays.
He basically said he was against forced marriage (who isn’t right?), is he going to support gay Muslims in his community?

Got an ex-Muslim mate of mine who was disowned by his family after he came out as gay and no longer wanted to follow the religion.

He was on course for a first in Biology at uni but had to drop out as his family no longer supported him and he couldn’t keep himself afloat just working a little student job in Sainsbury’s.

Happily enough, things did work out for him. He got a job working for Virgin Atlantic as cabin crew and is actually having a pretty good time of it - it doesn’t pay great money but you get a $100 per day living allowance/free hotel room and get a few days rest when working trips to the US - so decent short-term fun for a young gay lad.

Fortunately also his Grandma also acted as a bit of a family peacemaker, took him in, and encouraged his parents to get back in touch with the hope that he may one day convert back to the faith - so his family situation is a bit tetchy but not quite as awful as it used to be.

He has some fairly astonishing stories of how he was brought up not to question anything taught in his school or in the mosque, and forced to recite verses of the Qu’ran from memory in a language he obviously didn’t understand a word of.

Very humbling to be fair. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone I admire as much as him and I’m very lucky to have him as a mate.

Answer my question Barry. Why have you singled out one religion in the article whilst ignoring the other?

Its a cultural thing not a religious thing, South Asian.

CofE South Asian?

“Church of England bishops have rejected the idea of changing its opposition to same-sex marriage.”

The Rt Rev Graham James, Bishop of Norwich, said at a press conference that the church should not “adapt its doctrine to the fashions of any particular time”.

They called people’s sexuality(if it doesn’t agree with them) “a fashion of the time”. Can’t get more out of touch and Culturally ingrained than that mental statement.

FFS Barry you are reading the article through Barry-tinted spectacles and also misconstruing the words that don’t fit your worldview…

:lou_facepalm_2:

So because (you think) it’s a cultural thing with the Sikhs, that makes it ok?

Backward, totally but the CofE do have openly gay clergy, a step in the right direction and I did say culture.
The Western culture is easily the most tolerant towards sexual orientation and quite right to.

No equally backward.

Just quoting a BBC article, nothing more nothing less.

Which goes back to my original question… Why did you only mention that Muslim in your post and not the Sikh? Why would you single one group out?

Because a Guru wasn’t quoted but an iman was, I singled out a quote from an article not a faith.
They’re both as bad as each other ( I said its culture not necessarily solely faith based ignorance).

Bollocks Barry - So was I earlier and it contradicted what you had said.

Do you do it to get someone to bite or do you believe everything you post on these sort of topics?

What was contradicted?

But why did you do that? That’s what I don’t understand. If they’re both as bad as each other, why only mention the Muslim? Why ignore the other faith? It’s almost as if you have a problem with Islam.
