The Guardian are running a piece about the most promising youngsters nestling in the academy squads of Premier League teams.
Bear in mind that this is the Guardian. I find their football content to be a little suspect, and I reckon I could give many of their writers a factual run for their money (and I know fuck all about football).
They say that Jake Vokins is Southampton’s brightest academy prospect. Are they right? Who’s yours?
Named as a substitute at the age of 15 for the club’s under-21 fixture with Tottenham Hotspur in February of this year, he came on in the opening minutes following an injury to a team-mate and amazed onlookers with his composure. Joined the Southampton academy at the age of eight and his rise has been impressive. Starting out as a left midfielder before his conversion to left-back, Vokins is savvy, technically sound, comfortable on the ball and a decent crosser. He has not looked back since that performance against Tottenham and he is expected to get games for the club’s under-23s this season.
