Saints V Watford Build up and Match day thread

Right here’s my neck on the line for the first build up and match day starter of the 16/17 season.

BY rights we should be winning this game 3-0 and will go at least joint top of the EPL premiership league (delete where applicable) at end of play on Saturday

Some grumbling on Twitter last night after the Bilbao game.

If I am honest, deep down I share some of those. No issue with our squad or depth, nmore concerned that the Les effect has brought in a student of “The Southampton Way”

Last season we saw a major shake up in the EPL and many “unexpected” results. Looking into it, that was due in part to a change from Tika Taka football to the more direct and fast breaking style of Leicester (and to an extent us under RK and the likes of Swansea and others)

Just having seen what Leicester did with DIRECTNESS matched with PACE worries me - yes we have “Pace” in Redmond and “Pace” in speed of thought of Tadic, “Pace” in Long playing off the shoulder of a defender, but in the friendlies I watched we were very much back to the "aim for 70% possession type football.

I’m not wetting any beds yet, and we should be good enough to turn over Watford. Just have that nagging worry which I hope the first game blows away.

We never win the first game - 1-0 defeat. other Place Melt Down

All I worry slightly about is if we lose the battle in midfield. If there is one with Watford. I think we will be ok and win this one 2-0.

We have a blinking good team again.

The match is now a sell out :lou_lol: and Virgin are paying for a free drink if you arrive by 2.30pm… :lou_sunglasses:

I’m really looking forward to this one. Haven’t been down South all summer. I had some large bills to pay, Glastonbury to do and have spent a good deal of my time in hermit mode.

Looking forward to catchiing up with everybody. I will warn you. I’m even more deranged when I haven’t seen people for a bit. Probably won’t get to the humping your legs stage, but it’ll be lack of height rather than lack of desire that puts the kibosh on that :lou_wink_2:

I’d rather Virgin ran their fucking business better and stopped ringing me to speak to recently-deceased relatives.

They can stick their free drink where the sun don’t shine.

Havant.

Nothing earth shattering here from Claude.

Wouldn’t be drawn on whether there had been interest for Fonte, but did say something like he can’t see him leaving.

Seems to be very impressed with Redmond and his versatility.

Towards the end, he speaks less hesitantly and fluidly, but at times I did nod off…

I went back to the cricket half way through that Press conference as I had more chance of staying awake.

Given the bigging up of him by Claude and this sort of confidence, If he’s not already in your fantasy team, stick Redmond in there now.

Fairly apparent from that video that the language barrier is still a problem for Claude. Fair play to him for responding in English, but he reminds me of being a teen, learning French with my first Tricolore book.

He needs to learn other words than “possibility”, “spirit” and “concentration”.

He’s making Adkins look like Stephen Fry atm.

Daaaaahling!

Meeeeh!

If you’re going to do that, I’m changing my example.

Let’s see you incorporate Will Self.

You can’t, can you? Shooting Stars never did.

Will our box to box midfielder arrive in time for tomorrow lunchtime deadline, to make the squad?

Super excited for today. Once again, we don’t really know what we’re going to get. The immediate hope, as it was two seasons ago, was that we’re not shit under the new setup.

My wild wet dream is that we’ve got a good coach that can markedly improve our existing players. That’s surely one of the most satisfying things to see in football. “You didn’t know we had him, eh?” or “Ah, so such and such is shite, is he?”

Good mix this year. We’ve got older heads like Fonte and Long, but I’m just as excited to see if we can win anything with kids.
