Santorini

Yep. Another bloody holiday

Any recommendations? We are in Fira overlooking the caldera.

Going with parents, my partner and my sister and her partner. What could possibly go wrong!

Drive around the vineyards for some wine tasting - white wines from the assyrtiko grape which is native to the Island are particularly good. Also try Vin Santo - it is a light sweet wine - tatste of raisins - cracking stuff

It is famous for the sunsets over the caldera - most people schlep over to Oia in the evening - if you can see a decent sunset from Fira, then skip Oia as it will be rammed. Oia is worth a visit during the day, if only to get the ppicture of the blue domed church that is in every advert of greece.

Thanks CB saint. We are in a hotel on Fira so don’t think we will do the Oia for that. Vin Santo sounds nice!

Santorini was lovely! The Greek drivers are scary! And well who would have thought but the wine was as CB Saint put it ‘cracking stuff’. Though some of the bottles of it were pricey, a karafe was reasonable. I didn’t cope well with the Raki (unless it had honey in and was warm).

We went the last week in April and there was a massive storm one night. We thought we may wake up like Dorothy and Toto in another world but thankfully our hotel was built into a cliff so remained cosy. It’s not as cheap as other Greek islands but is a pretty place and we think we will head back and do the more beachy side now we have stayed on the Caldera side.

Managed to get a bargain rate at this place http://www.volcano-view.com/ If you book in advance they have some good deals on their website. Good food and wine in the resturant but not particularly cheap. But opposite was a 24 hour bakery with baklava and tiropita/spanakopita pastries and beer. It was 24 hours as they have no front doors.

The views of the sunsets were worth the price.

It was their Orthodox Easter week. Though this image sort of creeped us out a bit.

We would highly recomend Metaxi Mas taverna in Exo Genia (bookings needed) - meat eaters and vegetarians catered for. Lots of free Raki before and after. Huge portions of food. We liked it so much we went back.

Perissa

Perissa beach - the black sand gets super hot. We spent 3 days here and ate at a cafe called Tranquillo which had lots of vegetarian food and smoothies. It’s a bit of a traveller looking place.

Pyrgos was nice for a little walk around. There are also two restaurants we tried. One imaginatively called Pyrgos which was a higher priced one but the food was good. The other was a taverna called Mylopetra which had some reasonable priced tasty food.

This is a church by Red Beach (Wchi sounds like something out of GOT)

We walked all the way down 588 steps. In the hope to get a boat ride and failed.

We did not get a donkey back up

That’s pretty much like Bristol. Without the blue skies, buildings, language, culture, history, food. Just like Bristol
