Scousers vs neo-nazis

National Action tried to organise a White Man March in Liverpool city centre yesterday. It was eventually abandoned after being met with a huge number of counter-protestors.

Some quality clashes in this footage.

Huff Post’s coverage:-

A wonderful freedom of speech reaction to a freedom of speech action.

Don’t need the violence though - on both side.

There’s some deeper commentary in describing that scum as lost property, don’t you think?

Oh my god: the letter to the mayor. Dear me.

Tried to make it a bit easier to read.

I’ve made similar comment elsewhere, but they were crazy to try it in Liverpool. It’s not the least English city in England for nothing. The oldest black community in the United Kingdom, the oldest Chinatown in Europe, a port city comprised of people from all over the British Isles and the rest of the world. It has survived and thrived on waves after waves of immigration, and owes its unique character and accent to the melting pot of people that make it up.

My mate was on one of the people hemming them in. Reckoned they were pathetic, and that he could have taken them on alone :grimacing:

wtf is up with that, that can’t be 4 real? It was vaguely plausible till i.e. the 4th paragraph where it turned v.dark indeed.

Who knows? The group have actually denied sending the letter, but you never really know. Saving that, the other possibility is that someone opposed to them wrote the letter to bring attention to the case. The story was rumbling on for about a week in the local rag before the demonstration yesterday.

How did it get the oldest communities? Liverpool unfortunately has huge issues in this and the fact they chose to come here highlights that, they will hide in the dark though as always and the people present there for the racist march were outsiders.

I actually had to look your question up, Bazza. If I’d have gone with the easy answer, the Triangle Trade, I’d only be telling part of the story. Many of the earliest members of the community were black loyalists from the War of Independence.

Chinese community arrived as a result of the city’s trade with China in the early 1800s.

The neo-nazis are up for round two, apparently.

This reaction from the mayor is a bit depressing.

“I’m looking to start a petition asking MPs to support an amendment to the localism bill to give mayors and council leaders powers to stop marches , and for them to have to appeal to the Home Secretary, a reverse of the current situation.

“Based on the level of violence that occurred in the city – I am convinced there would be more violence if there was another attempt by them to march. I imagine they would return with more people next time.”

Not exactly great mayoring from Joe Anderson there. Charitably, you might say he’s just looking to save the money on policing. The worry is that he, or others like him, will use it to prevent legitimate protest.

Tut tut, pap. “A legitimate protest”. To the downtrodden white man, that march was a legitimate protest. To those taking part, all marches and demonstrations are legitimate, it’s only if you disagree with them that they’re not.

I knew that I was going to get in trouble for that as I wrote it.

Completely take your point. They have a right to protest, just as the others have the right to counter-protest. The system we have now, where anyone stepping clearly out of line gets nicked, is good enough.

I can certainly see why Joe Anderson is frustrated. Yes, violence and some huge policing bill is inevitable, but he’s mayor of a city famous for being involved in social movements. He’s advocating something that is blanket draconian.

I read the thread title and thought Pap had had some run in with some jobsworth in his local Council!!!
