and many others have a better atmosphere than we do?
I have just been reading a few things about out poor atmosphere or the lack of it and was wondering to why it is so bad?
The middle classes?
The stadium?
Prawn sandwiches?
Because we are civilized down south.
You are mistaking atmosphere for a bunch of baying Northern Yobboâs.
and the North starts at Winchester before you tell me CP is in the South.
I donât but it has always had a good atmospehere even in the early 90âs when I went, by comparison we have a very quiet one.
There has to be reasons and what can we do or shall I say the people that go do to improve it?
Its too polite.
Donât get defensive Pap, I donât know if you went 20 odd years ago but the atmosphere is incomparable, night and day and we were absolutely shit then as well.
Never knew i was a northerner until i read this.
Explains a lot
Iâm not getting defensive, @barry-sanchez .
Just pointing out that I donât go to many Palace games, you donât go to many Saints games.
The only people capable of making an impartial judgement are those that donât support either team, and most are unlikely to give a fuck for that reason.
I donât see how your query gets resolved.
I was reading this and other things basically
Oh noes. How will we ever best the Premier League atmosphere of Newcastle, Villa or QPR?
Iâve got an idea; maybe we just turn up
That article is years old, Bazza.
Its still relevant Pap, our atmosphere is shite compared, we do have arguably the most middle class fans going along with Fulham, does this affect atmosphere? I think so but also so does the ground.
Go to a game at the emirates stadium @barry-sanchez you will be amazed how quiet 60,000 can be.
Is there really nothing at all that youâre happy about concerning the club?
No disrespect, @barry-sanchez - but Iâve been to nearly every home game in the last three years. I may not know much about football, but atmosphere is something I can tell you about. Iâm much like your hero Russ Abbot on that front.
Atmosphere is very much an ephemeral, changeable thing, which can ebb and flow with the game. Perfect examples are our games against Liverpool last year. Youâd have been very proud with the atmosphere in last yearâs league cup tie, right up until the moment Liverpool equalised. At 1-5, it really wasnât as fun for us. I walked out at that point.
The 3-2 was something else entirely. After going two goals down, the atmosphere was tense and subdued. Most were simply hoping for some resistance. Most thought the game was over when Maneâs penalty was saved. Few realised what was about to happen, that Mane would be reborn on the pitch and go on to score two goals, including the winner.
There are some specific problems at St Marys. We might be more co-ordinated with one singing section; Itchen and Northam rarely join up, and when they do, itâs not for long. Weâve also got competing blocks of singers in Itchen North. Historically, the chants have been led from the back. Weâve managed to start a few from row Z. That said, all clubs have their problems. The scousers are already complaining that the new Main Stand is mostly corporate.
Klopp has come from a club where the working class masses can get in easily to one with a huge foreign fanbase.
If a temple like Anfield can be infested with disinterested and passionless fans, you should count your lucky stars on St Maryâs. When it rocks, it rocks - and when the whole ground bursts into OWTS, thereâs nowt else like it. The hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Personally I blame the immigrants.
The thread might have gone better if it had been left at "Simply put why does Crystal Palace?
Why do I find that so funny ?
Sir is quite correct.
I like it is from Southampton.
Its funny many of the bigger clubs do.
I once got ripped off in South London and only realised that Iâd been ripped years later.
I paid a fiver for a tour of âCrystal Palaceâ, and left sated. After I found out that the original had burned down, I was resolved to find out what I actually visited.
It was a fucking greenhouse. Not an especially large one, either.
At my height, you just donât notice the difference.
Tell you what, that awful âWe Are Southamptonâ song doesnât help. Aside from being cringeworthy as hell it immediately shuts up any pre-match singing and results only in a muted, slightly embarrassed cheer at the end of it.
We do need more songs though to be fair. Even getting âlittle Southampton taking the pissâ going once in a while wouldnât hurt in terms of adding a bit of variety to the usual OWTS. Still, having beaten all of the big 6 last year and failing to make much progress with it I donât expect weâll see much change any time soon.
Still, canât complain too much. The atmosphere at plenty of Premiership grounds is fairly shit as well. West Brom, Sunderland, Watford, even Leicester, certainly West Ham nowadaysâŚArsenal is an obvious oneâŚmeh. I could go on.
Youâd prefer it was from Derby though I presume?
Anyone ever noticed how the atmosphere is always shit for an early kick off?
Clearly not enough beer gets consumed.
