Southampton FC - League Cup History

I have been toying with the idea of going to this game, but I think I am going to give it a miss, as below are the games I have been to which Saints have been in the Quarter Final of the League Cup. I have been to everyone of these games home and away and they are ALL the quarter finals we have got to since I have been old enough to go to games on my own. All seemed to be going well in all of the games as well, only to go terribly wrong!

It is fucking bad reading. Even though some will say, that I have to break it at some point surely?

We started competeing in 1960-61, but I will leave the goodish news to the end!

The below games are ALL of the quarter Finals Saints have been in!

1988/89

Luton Town 1-1 Southampton (Cockerill rescued a replay from the dreaded plastic pitch in 79th Minute to bring Luton back to The Dell, in a game that we were hot favourites)

Replay

Southampton 1-2 Luton - Rod Wallace 118 minutes. We missed a couple of sitters in this game, but then conceeded 2 goals in a few minutes in extra time… dream over.

1989/90

Southampton 2-2 Oldham - Le Tissier 6, 84 minutes. The 84th minute penalty looked like it was going to win for the Saints and send us into the semi final only for an the ball to deflected off of frannies chest right into the top corner, right in front of my eyes in the milton, deep into injury time.

Oldham 2-0 Southampton - On the plastic pitch, we really did not ever look like winning and went into the game with no confidence.

1990/91

The 3rd year in a row that we had reached the quarter finals!

Southampton 1-1 Man U - Shearer 71 minutes. We took the lead in the last 20 minutes, but could only hold on to it for 6 minutes when a Mr Hughes scored!

Man U 3-2 - Shearer 52, 87 minutes. Case was sent off and Hughes got a hat-trick, we battled well, but the ref was against us for sure!

1996/97

Stockport 2-2 Southampton - Ostenstad 16, 85. We levelled up with 5 minutes left to earn a replay against the lowest team left in the cup. We could have won it in injury time, but Matty opted to chip rarther than put his foot through the ball and it sailed over the bar into the travelling freezing cold army! But hey at home to Stockport we are going to the semis!!

Southampton 1-2 Stockport - Le Tisser 6 minutes. We got off the the perfect start, but failed to build on it and Stockport managed to score a couple in the last 28 minutes. They outplayed us in the 2nd half. I am still unsure how this happened.

2003/04

Bolton 1-0 Southampton. This looked set for a Saints win as we had planty of chances before the end of 90 minutes, but Bolton managed to grab the winner in extra time as we went on to miss a couple of sitters.

2014/15

Sheffield United 1-0 Southampton

This is probably the only game from the above that we never looked like winning the game from start to finish! Also a few days after I went to the Burnley 1-0 Southampton league game!

So in the time I have been going to watch Saints on my own, the leage cup has hurt me big time. Thise 3 years in a row between the years of 1989-91 when I was the ages of 14/15/16, it seemed like the end of the world! Also to add to this, all of the games apart from one we lost by 1 painful goal!

So I would be happy to stay away and Saints to win, but I really feel I should go and break the jinks!

Now some better news

1986/87

Southampton 1-0 Shewsbury - Clarke 68 minutes.

The last time we won a quarter final in the league cup, 11 attempts ago!

1978/79

Southampton 2-1 Man City - Boyer 41 mins, Hebberd 75 mins.

Of course we went on to beat Leeds over 2 legs 3-2 after being 2-0 down in the first leg Holmes scored after 50 minutes and Williams on 62 mins.

We won the home leg 1-0 with an early goal from Curran after 11 minutes.

We lost the final after taking the lead against Forest!

1968/69

Spurs 1-0 Southampton - 88 minutes.

So overall 9 Quarter Finals, we have won 2 where we have lost in a semi final to Liverpool and the final to Forest. So surely the next quarter final win, it will only be fair for us to win the trophy?!

So basically if we avoid plastic pitches, replays and lower-league opposition, we’re golden.

Wem-ber-ley, Wem-ber-ley!

Well we are avoiding all 3 of them, so at least a semi final?

Spurs 1-0 Southampton - 88 minutes.

With a goal scored by their reserve centre-half, who ha d come on as sub (only 1 in those days, children) and pushed up front. We had dominated the game, hitting the bar several times and Pat Jennings saved the rest.

Good scrapping at the Park Lane End. I was 10 and looking after the watches and wallets of several of Milton Roads finest, down the front.

Anyone else have memories of the above games?

You have to admit, it is a pretty poor run of quarter final scores. In the main games we should haave been winning

Stockport

Luton

Oldham

Sheffield United

poor poor poor.

Stockport - pissed.

Luton - pissed off.

Oldham - fucking cold. Plastic pitch. Chaos trying to get in as one set of turnstiles for 3 pens. Gates shut before ko so we had to demand the police re-open it as the away section wasnt half full. They did for a whole 2 mins. I got in and wished I hadnt. We were awful. My 2 mates had more fun in the pub.

Sheff Utd - exceedingly pissed. What happened?

This season though yes?

Well tonight.

Man City v Hull City

Boro v Everton

Stoke v Sheffield Wed

We have to be hoping for a Hull, Boro and Sheff Wed win, then surely if we beat Liverpool we will win the thophy yes? We lose tomorrow and hand it to Liverpool.

As we can see from above though, this is not always the case!

Personally I think it will be Man City, Stoke and Boro, joining us or Liverpool.

This was the game that I developed my hatred for Spurs. As you say, there was some really violent old school football trouble in The Park Lane End, that continued to the tube and then Waterloo. I too was a mere 10 yr old, but with my Uncle, Auntie and Grandad. On the Tube station a cockney wanker grabbed my Grandad’s collar and Saints scarf and threatened to chuck him onto the line! WAC. On the train from Waterloo there were numerous fans with bloodied noses, black eyes and grazed knuckles exchanging sories of their battles. Scary, stuff for a 10 yr old.

Jesus, we are so close again to getting to Wembley. Apart from Man City, I do not fear any of the others over 2 legs!

I would fucking love it, if we won this trophy!

Plastic pitches, seriously WTF? I have played on a few and they a bloody horrible. Professinal football should never, ever be played on plastic!

Rant over. Anyway, although I didnt go my most disappoining League Cup match was the final against Forest. In the lead and looking comfy at half time but what Cloughie said at half time transformed Forest and they won at a canter. Just to rub salt into the wound Nick Holmes scored one of the best goals scored at Wembley to make it 3-2 and give us some hope in the last minutes. It was also used as the big match in that football movie with Ian McShane, Yesterday’s Hero.

I scored my only own goal on a ‘plastic/capet’ pitch over the sports centre in the early 90’s. The ball bounced up to a stupid height and zipped up so fast, the ball just flew off my leg into the top corner. Left a school friend goalkeeper Ren rooted to the spot! I also went off in the game with a pulled muscle… should have stayed in that evening!

I seem to remember Jimmy Gabriel hitting the bar from about 25 yards out. I went with my mate who was a Spud. We were one of the first in the ground and found a decent spot on the half way line. After about 10 minutes this oik (spud) comes up to us and says “fuck off, this is my spot, I always stand here.” My natural reaction was to make a sarcastic remark back but fortunately my mate had more common sense and dragged me away before it turned ugly. Thing was my mate had his spuds scarf on at the time!

Since to formation of Sotonians Southampton FC have not lost a domestic cup game.

Well we will face either, Everton, Man City or Stoke over 2 legs. We have a pretty shocking record against all of these.

Yeah! We haven’t beaten Stoke for over a year and they win down here every time. Facepalm!

.

It is not as bad as I thought, pretty even. We have also only played them once in the league cup and beat them. We have plyed them once in the FA Cup and have lost.

We have not lost to Man City, Everton or Stoke in the league Cup… just need to beat Liverpool then and we will win the trophy?!
