Southampton v Burnley - Match Thread

Was actually being tongue in cheek … Man Utd and Liverpool is normally a pretty eventful affair. Add to that Klopps gung ho football and Mourhino, Ibrahimovic, Pogba etc. and it should be pretty exciting.

Know what your saying about the big games, generally they tend to be pretty overcautious, bland affairs.

One caveat here - Burnley were pants for most of the game. But then again on occasion we’ve struggled to put lesser teams to the sword. It could have been 6,7,8 today on that second half performance.

Heaton was very impressive.

They are still a premier league team. Do you not look at our play sometimes and feel really proud of how we play. Like you, I have seen us lose to some shite over the years, but we never looked in danger today and that second half was wave after wave of attacks.

Arsenal couldn’t break down their defence last time out, we did easily, time and time again … it was only Heaton stopped it being a cricket score

I can’t go to Milan but I’m loving your ever increasing, nervous excitment as it gets nearer. Try not to burst before the game

Job done. Another decent result and great to see Sam McQueen come in and do well. Cant wait for the Milan game! :lou_sunglasses:

The stand in’s stand in? He should be getting far more praise for a fine performance(particularly the mature way he won a penalty). Just proves how good the team as a whole played that he’s not being singled out.

Everyone of them looks less restricted in their play this season. JWP and Tadić especially, but also Clasie and i’m even thinking Davis(not forgetting Targett). Is this just a system change or a manager that encourages players to be more adventurous in their play?

The mostly non-footballing football report.

Sfcsim has only made one game that I’ve made this season, so gavstar was my friendly Sotonian partner for the day. My middle bro was absent. We managed.

Didn’t really feel too threatened by Burnley. There was a time deep in the first half where I thought we might not win, but I didn’t think we’d lose. We did 30 shots or something, according to Goatboy. Even so, it was a one-sided contest not told by the 3-1 result.

Burnley didn’t seem to know their way to goal. Our players do, counter-attacking or otherwise. There were points were we were simply toying with their back line, just trying things out to find a way through.

The squad seemed to cope well despite the absence of two internationals. That’s encouraging. I can remember the days when Luke Shaw looking sniffly filled me with the dread of impending Fox. Good to see Targett get another game, and always nice to see youngsters like McQueen on the go.

Inexplicably, I think we may have had Burnley fans in our end. Their end was only half-populated, so there really was no need, but I reckon a couple to the front right of me were Clarets in disguise. Didn’t say a word all game.

The nippers in front of us are basically ripe for singing recruitment now. They sing anyway, but have so far not impressed with an original repertoire. I did not join in with “we pay your benefits”. However, I do think there’s a bit of scope to get some fucking originals on the go, or at the very least, something that everyone else isn’t doing. We shall see.

Well I watched the game on TV from the comfort of my bunk offshore Malaysia.

From the off till the 17th minute we were in complete control and when Targett went off we sort of lost our way until half time.

VVD looked to have given a penalty away when he threw his leg in front of the Bunley attacker but the home friendly ref saw nothing :lou_lol:

Second half McQueen looked good although he went down abit easy for the penalty (his feet appeared to rise as he took a 6/10 dive. We over ran Burnley in all dept’s and were good value for the win. even on the TV replays I could not see what they gave the penalty to them for. Just giving the one he missed in the first half back to them. but as we were 3-0 up at the time not a worry. and they certainly never loooked like scoring from open play.

JR should have made it four with a tap in from a sublime McQueen cross but fluffed his lines .

I suppose i was too good to hope for both our ex-Burnley players to score.

I’m loving Austin’s form at the moment, especially after all the nonsense we heard out of the pornographers of the Swindled Stadium. I also love that we got him for 4m.

Good turn out from our crew last night and amazing nto discover that the local radio stations now cover match commentary and even gave us a name check!

We did well to focus on the game tbh, we had one tourist & his wife join us but most of the pre-match talk was Qatar vs Oman vs Pegasus vs Emirates vs Alitalia and Hotel Metros Canals and stuff. Biggest news was t he unveiling of our new Flag. It is awesome and you’ll spot it somewhere in Milan (As long as we find the Fire Certificate!) PLUS the manufacturer actually gave us a Bogof deal and gave us a mini-flag to go with it.

We started the game well, went flat so portions of Chicken Wings were ordered which stabilised things, early in the second half we had a tactical change of chair positions and BOOM never looked back.

Highlights? Heaton’s save, Chazza’s 1st half frustration, McQueen doing a Tom Daley and Tadic trying to pretend he didn’t clothes-line the Burnley player in the box for their pen. (Ref was ALWAYS going to look for a soft option to level things up)

What WAS impressive was that BeIn Sports (Plus the Studio Crew of Keys Gray & Curbishley) gave excellent coverage to Frannie Benali’s lap of honour.

A good evening out, I got delegated to take the BIG flag (FFS it weighs about 5Kg which fucks up my carry on luggage plans)

Onwards to Italy, Boarding Pass Printed one day to go and Inter are in turmoil. What can possibly go wrong… (Well we’re Saints we all know the answer to that)

McQueen was indeed excellent.

Can he do it again in the San Siro?

Still doesn’t feel real typing things like that.

re their “penalty” commentator was saying that ref (Dean??) was giving pens for shirt pulling at start of season and that’s probably what he gave it for. Then you see replays and Tadic blocks their player off yet **RIGHT IN FRONT OF TADIC AND THE REF ** a Burnley player has got a fist full of VVD’s shirt, go figure :lou_is_a_flirt:

(about 6:50 in this video)

McQueen at Inter? The lad must be pinching himself at the prospect. He must feel like Chris Baird did when he was thrown into the team for the FA Cup final.

I’m not saying Romeu tidied up everything today, but don’t be surprised if you get home and find that your kitchen is spotless # saintsFC

Outstanding perfomance from the team. Enjoying everyday more and more playing in St Mary’s. # saintsfc

Southampton FC and Premier League

Southampton’s midfield of Romeu, Davis and Clasie completed 93% of their passes vs. Burnley, misplacing just 13 between them. # saintsfc

Feck me, quick maths, that’s 200 passes
