🚀 👨‍🚀 Space X - Mission to Mars

Got my geek on last night and watched Elon Musks whole presentation about his planned mission to Mars and beyond.

Genuinely inspiring stuff from a brilliant man with a vision. Realistically the only way this was going to happen was with a private company as the political sensitivity of sinking the public purse into this would have held it back years.

My boy and I have been watching all the Space X launches for the last few years and watching the project develop has been amazing. The reusable rockets and the pinpont landings on the barges are just a marvel.

Its going to happen and hopefuly in my lifetime. Actually quite excited about this

Anyone else watching this as it unfolds? - think I may have a boycrush on Elon TBH

the short

The whole presentation ( mach diamonds from the Raptor rocket are sweet)

For those who are extremely geeky I’m sure you will join me in a squeal of self indulgent joy at the fact that there will be 42 engines and he wants to call the first ship ‘heart of gold’

It all sounds amazing but I have some issues. Where will they get their water from for example? If we were to expand on this planet we wouldnt move into the deserts unless we had a large water supply from somewhere. If we are to move out into the universe we need to learn how to do so relatively near to home to start with. So why not start with colonising the moon? No water there either but at least the supply line is shorter and quicker until we can figure out a way to travel the extra long distances to Earthlike planets.

There is water on the moon and on mars, in much larger quantities than you’d think - running water on mars at different times of its year. Its all in the video if you ever get the chance.

We may struggle for water but think of all the cheese fondue parties.

If one Sotonian was allowed a place who would we vote to go?

:lou_wink:

Depends how long we can get rid of them for and if they would still have access to the interweb?

I guess it will be a one way trip

t’interweb would be slow given the distance. Would need to think about powering their laptop. Nuclear power?

I would still have to talk to some clueless cunt in a call centre to sort out my data roaming :lou_angry:

Yeah, your roaming charges would be a bit high…

Not as slow as mine here on Earth. I had a download speed of 0.07 Mbps and an upload speed of 0.7 Mbps last night!!!

They could take a team of Polish plumbers…job done.

Have you not watched The Martian? If he can grow potatoes using human excrement then water shouldn’t be a problem.

Musk says travel to Mars will be like “Battlestar Galactica,” cost around $100,000

Thing is , I believe him. He delivers on his visions. This isn’t a whack job with an idea pulled out of the air - they have been working towards this since 2002

He is a whack job but a whack job with serious wedge.

I believe!

I will never look at a King Edward in the same way again!

This pleases me :lou_smiley:

Why they spend all this money is beyond me.

Cheaper alternatives.

In which case, if you can get a faster upload / download speed on Mars I nominate you as the first Sotonian on Mars…good luck and all that

Rocket launch in a bit.
