šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø Stupid things sports pundits say

Our recent escape from relegation (I say escape - at time of writing weā€™ve yet to play Man City) has reminded me of something I heard on talksport a few years ago and the nonsense that comes out of pundits mouths.

There was a discussion between the presenter and Stan Collymore. The topic of debate was a breakaway ā€˜super premier leagueā€™ that didnā€™t have promotion or relegation and included the countries biggest clubs.

I remember being included (asides from the current usual big clubs):

Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and maybe some others that were then currently in the Championship. No mention of the mighty Saintsā€¦

However the most ridiculous thing that he said was Portsmouth (then still financially pulling the wool over everyones eyes in the Premier league) should definitely be in as one the big teamsā€¦

Idiot.

Iā€™m pretty sure that quite a number of the teams he mentioned are either still in the Championship, or even lower. Plus a number of the then ā€˜big premier league teamsā€™ are nowhere to be seen - Villa, Sunderland, Portsmouth et al.

What do these pundits know, eh?

Half the problem is that they donā€™t understand the definition of words.

Jamie Redknapp described a player as being ā€œliterally on fireā€.

The Fire Brigade were not called out, and no-one ran out from the touchline to douse a combusting footballer.

Who is ever going to beat the cricket commentator

" The batsman is Holding the bowlers Willey"

The late Brian Johnstone in either 1976 or 1980 - absolutely deliberate comment. Were I to be pedantic, which heaven forbid, Iā€™d point out that it was actually the other way round.

My favourite punditry arse-up has got to be Jonathan Pearce being the only person in the world who couldnā€™t understand the then-new goal line decision technology. I recall he was still grumbling about it in his next commentary gig. Youā€™d have thought all his work with robots would have prepared him.

Here he is, being a bell end.

ā€œWhich replay are we supposed to believe?ā€

Itā€™s not so much the technology thatā€™s caught him out, as the concept of linear time.

Paul Mersonā€™s comments about Alex Ferguson some years ago were great ā€œHeā€™s United through and through, if you cut him he bleeds redā€ yeah Paul, just like everyoneā€¦ ā€œIt was 0-0 till they scoredā€ is another one of his pearls of wisdom Iā€™m fond of too.

I once spoke to Jonathan Pearce on The 5 "live phone in ā€¦ back in 2005 just after we stuffed Pompey at home - I got on 606 as was about to do a 500km charity bike ride form the Riverside in Middlesborough to St Maryā€™s in aid of the Neurological unit at Southampton General Hospitalā€¦ he was a twat then too, as I wanted to push the charity angle and he was probing about ā€˜Derbyā€™ shitā€¦ twat

When Martin Keown has more idea than you whatā€™s going on, youā€™re fucked as a human being.

I often comment on the ridiculous stuff that sports pundits say. My partner absolutely loves me commenting.

This is actually the opposite of the thread title. AndyH appears regularly in my Twitter Timeline. For those who donā€™t kno, he is the man who has single handedly revived Accrington Stanley and taken them into L1. He rants against the stupiity in modern football, explains so much about how he is trying to keep Stanley a sustainable community club.
This thread today on Twitter is a great example of why he is a modern football hero. It is also, in this modern era, stupid to think anyone can run a football club without spunking billions down the toilet.

Read the whole thread.
