Possibilities form only to disintegrate immediately. Clubs that haven’t done their transfers properly sign players in, even though they might not be players they actually need (Man Utd, I’m looking at you). Other teams may be inspired by a poor start (hello Chelsea).

Please please have a rant about Cedric being too lightweight and needs to bulk out and add defensive qualities to his undoubted attacking skills. I’d love you to be proved wrong on that one too.

Southampton have agreed a fee of £11.5m with Scottish champions Celtic for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.
The 24-year-old is having a medical with the Premier League club before finalising a five-year contract.
Van Dijk joined Celtic in 2013 after three years with Groningen and has won two successive league titles and the Scottish Cup with the Bhoys.
As Van Dijk arrives, Saints forward Emmanuel Mayuka, 24, has left to join French club Metz on a three-year deal.
The Zambia international, who was top scorer at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, joined Saints from Young Boys in August 2012 and scored once in 19 appearances.
He spent the 2013-14 season on loan at French side Lorient.

This cannot be true? Not only did Alpine assure us that we would screw this up and Virgil would go elsewhere, but also that VIc’s strop would see Les cave in and sell him. My world view is shattered. If I can no longer trust in Alpine then who can I trust?
