Ah, good - itā€™s a Cracked Rib matchday thread. Although I think thread-starting duties should be relinquished if itā€™s not another healthy win.

2-0 Saints.

Pelle and a JWP penalty late on

The Marseillaise to be played at all Premier League games, including ours.

Now donā€™t get me wrong - last weekendā€™s events were horrific. But given that the Leagueā€™s position is essentially ā€˜thereā€™s some French players in the divisionā€™, this seems a bit unrepresentative.

For argumentā€™s sake, we have a Kenyan first-team starter. This year 147 people were killed at a college in his homeland. Why didnā€™t we play his national anthem too?

This is exactly why the club has its ā€˜All Saints Dayā€™ to remember all those that have passed in the year previous.

Thereā€™s absolutely nothing to stop people paying their respects, but it doesnā€™t sit right with me to be ā€˜choosyā€™.

Iā€™m not 100% onboard with minuteā€™s silences at football anyway, at least not for political matters. Fair play if weā€™re honouring a former Saint, but do we really want to act politically at the football?

If you and I have concerns about the specificity of this particular initiative, and weā€™re English, itā€™s only going to be felt more acutely outside of our bubble.

In all honesty, I am probably going to miss the kick off over this. It doesnā€™t sit right with me, so I wonā€™t sit right with it.

With you on this. Give me an extra 5 minutes to finish my pint. I wanted to fit in a round of happy birthday to you for Southampton Football Club as well before kick off!

Itā€™s not an uncommon sentiment - Iā€™ve looked over Southampton related boards and the Daily Echoā€™s comments sites.

Iā€™d add to what ant said earlier; Wanyama is Kenyan, and to my knowledge, his country has suffered two terrorist attacks since he first pulled on a Saints shirt, including one that happened at around the same time, and another that happened in his home city, leading to a few days worth of panic as Victor received news from his cousins back home.

There is a time and a place, which has already been and gone, imo. I said earlier that I was uncomfortable with the specificity of playing La Marseillaise, and also said that Iā€™m uncomfortable with football games being politicised in general, but the England vs France game was the perfect time and place, and people not knowing the words aside, was a respectful and appropriate tribute. The French team were there, so recently privy to the shocking events in Paris. England draping its stadium in the tricolore of its historical rival was a powerful visual image. Despite my usual objections, I thought it was a fitting gesture.

The Premier League stuff is a step too far, I reckon, there to generate footage for news or MoTD. It also sets a precedent for more periods of prolonged respect for political matters in the future, and all most of us want to do is watch a game of football and sing a few disrespectful songs at the opposition.

Make the most of this weeks offical match threadā€¦ looks like nexk week we could have ā€™ Manchester City attack The Might Saints with Gay Abandon

Good post Pap, spot on IMO. This is a step too far for one specific tragedy which had nothing to do with football or the teams on Saturday. There is an attack in Mali right now, where people have been killed.

I hate missing kick off so imagine I will be there and be silent / show respect of course but wish it hurries up and ends, whatever ā€œitā€ is.
