Something that cropped up in the RK thread that I think deserves a wider discussion.

Under RK we have “heard” that the path to the first team was blocked for our youngsters.

IMHO Matt Targett showed a great deal of promise when he was switched to a wing back, putting in some great crosses. But would we pick him ahead of Tadic in the form HE showed in the last weeks of the season?

But deeper down what do we think?

For Example, Big Vic is almost nailed on to go to Spurs, so The Southampton Way is to replace him with Harry Reed. :lou_eyes_to_sky:

Dusan needs back up, so Lloyd Isgrove needs game time.

Jack Stephens is now ready to challenge Maya & Gardos for the squad cover CB position.

Will Turnbull make the step up? Are McQueen or Gallagher going to keep Austin & Jay Rod off the bench.

Time for Gazza to be our Number 2.

Can we REALLY improve on this seasons position with them playing regularly.

Would you be happy travelling to deepest Kazakhstan to watch our Academy lads in the Europa League?

Can we win the JPT equivalent again- our Academy boys beating the Skates at Wembley eh?

Hell, which of (our over 18 players) float GA’s or Fatso’s boat? Is there a Pelle replacement in our own Academy?

Lots to discuss and a long wet summer ahead.

I remember reading a quote from Koeman saying Targett was the only U21 player ready for the first team. Reed wasn’t quite there and the rest were far behind. However, this looks now like it could have been partly influenced by his attitude, although I don’t doubt his ability to assess a player. I suspect if the new guy is similar to Poch, in that they really do integrate the U21’s into the 1st team set up, this will bring them on considerably. From what i’ve seen of Reed on 1st team duty, he’s always done well - 3-0 at home to (ironically) everton a couple of seasons ago (near Xmas) springs to mind when we were beset with injuries and he nailed the DF role very nicely. As for the others, i guess time will tell, but for me the new manager needs to bring them closer to the 1st team and play them in the league cup and europa games that mean nothing as we’ve won our first 4 and qualified from the group at a canter!

But would we be happy as fans on here with Harry Reed starting every week or so in rotation with Romeu?

I wouldnt have a problem with Reed being on the bench. He seemed to be doing ok until he fell out of favour with RK for some reason.
