TV For Dummies

And I include myself in that…I always used to make sure I caught up with current affairs, but now only take a fleeting interest, and I really don’t know why. Apart from the occassional documentary (historical or personal interest) and obligatory sport, the only things I tend to have on in the background when I’m not listening to music are programmes like Jezza Kyle, Judge Judy etc…not good is it?

Mrs Stickman and I are thinking about getting rid of the telly altogether.

I’d miss the sport, but hopefully soon I’ll be able to attend more matches live and there’s always the pub.

Documentaries etc I can watch on iplayer.

We’re getting to the end of broadcast TV, I reckon. The only things I now watch on it are live sports events.

Not good at all. Akin to having someone slowly filling up your ears and eyes with bodily fluids (Jeremy Kyle’s no less). Some people may enjoy it but in the short and long term it will be detrimental to your health.

Stick with the documentaries.

When I was a nipper, the only little shit I had any sympathy for in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, apart from Charlie Bucket, of course, was Mike Teavee. I watched telly. It wasn’t so bad, was it? I remember spending time in a house in the 1980s where they didn’t have a telly, and feeling close to mortified.

Apart from a few shows which we watch via other means, I don’t watch TV these days, and I’ve got so much time to do other stuff as a result. I get what Roald Dahl was talking about. The eldest kid doesn’t watch much TV either.

A mate of mine who has an account here, Stuski , nailed this back in the days when satellite and cable were emerging. He said that having multiple channels had been responsible for the lack of what is now known as the watercooler moment, or the playground when we were kids. Chances are someone had seen what you’d seen, because we only had four channels.

The watercooler moment is back; but scripted drama driven these days by recommendation and quality, rather than a lack of choice. It’s also at its best when not catering to the channel hopping TV viewer, providing enough exposition in every episode so that Thicky McNewViewer knows who everybody is.

Tastes have changed, delivery mechanisms have changed and people have more demands on their time. TV is competing with everything at the moment, and its traditional revenue streams are unreliable. Can they guarantee advertisers that their ads will be seen in the DVR age, especially on stuff like scripted drama or comedy? Perhaps with the “I must see it ‘live’” crowd. The most common question heard in houses with a DVR player is “why are we watching the adverts?”.

Nowt wrong with that jet sounds. Not everything has to be serious or highbrow. I mean, i’d be lost without Babestation*, during bouts of insomnia.

* or Golden Girls/Studio 66/redhot/redhot chubbers/redhot wives/playboy plus, etc, etc

It is certainly true that if you randomly turn on the television, you are unlikely to be presented with anything enjoyable, but that is true of almost anything. If you randomly turn on the radio, are they likely to be playing a song that you like? If you randomly pick up a book, is it not likely to be bilge? If you randomly talk to a stranger, would you expect for them to have anything interesting to say?

We live in great times! There is probably more top-end, high quality television being produced than ever before, and the internet grants us the capacity to find out about it, and to watch it at our convenience. It is true that there is also an equally unprecedented amount of bottom-feeding shite in production, but if you’re going to randomly turn on the TV and subject yourself to Jeremey Kyle doing pop-psychology on spackers, then, well, more fool you!

Presumably, you’re asking for a ‘friend’, right? You’ve got a well earnt rep on here, Lou…don’t burst the bubble now.

I thought this was the Guilty Pleasures thread? No? Oh OK. Best not mention the 5 day binge me and my housemates had with the Sex and the City box set a couple of years back, then.

I take it they’re soft porn channels Numptyboi?..I’ve ner watched any of them, I use the internet .

Anyway, here’s an example of my tv viewing tastes…I’m now laying in bed watching Missing Persons Unit on tru tv…ok, maybe not technically tv for dummies, but low brow, albeit interesting.

I only watch high brow documentaries and such like. Earlier today I watched a programme that I had recorded about the Great Walk of China. Very interesting. For instance, I found out that they reckon now that the wall was about 22,000km long and it isn’t just one wall but about 16. The wall was constructed using a mortar made from sticky rice. Only problem with such documentaries are that they’re not that easy to masturbate to.

I started watching the Interceptor the other day. Absolutely appalling and don’t know why the Beeb commission such crp so gave up quick. I know they must feel the need to have some UK drama but compared to the high quality US shows it is embarassing.

Have bucketload of channels but rarely search down the list and also can’t be arsed to have put the HD version on., SkyArts is so far down I always forget. I need to scale back
