It’s been an excellent first week for Sotonians, but we’re not here to rest on our laurels. I’ll be putting two new badges live this evening. They are both pretty similar in that they relate to early joiners. Here they are.
Badge #1 - Founding Centurion
One of the first 100 members to join Sotonians.
Badge #2 - Early Doors
Joined before a certain time (I am not saying what that time is, for extra mystery)
Both are profile badges.
Existing members can collect the batch by clicking My Tools -> Edit ‘your username’ , like with the Photogenic badge.
I see that Detective Spudders has been on the case, and noticed that the URL linking here has disappeared. I wonder if JB is in Fiver Mountain Dungeon.
Just remember to pick these up if you haven’t already, guys. It’s the first 100 people to visit their profile page before we get 100 members. I may end up creating a badge just for people who miss out too. Avoid the shame!

We’ve got to get to 100 members first before that’s a problem, papster!
Almost 50 in week one. I’m happy enough with that. The only question is whether we’re still handing out Centurion badges after the Early Doors badge disappears, which is time-limited,
It’s a badge that you get when visiting your profile date. Anyone that joined before 24th May is still eligible. Don’t worry though. I’ve already got ideas for further badges to accommodate those that join a little later.
I had a look into the Founding Centurion situation. At the time of writing, we’ve handed out 68 of those badges; The badge won’t stop giving out until it hits 102 (accounting for the two admin accounts).
This is a Profile badge, meaning you need to go to:-
My Tools -> Edit yourusername
To collect it. I’ve been pretty good about letting people know about that recently, but may not have explained it to some of the other sign-ups. If you don’t have the badge, go get it before it is gone.
I met Murray Gell-Mann once (who nicked the nonsense word ‘quark’ from Finnegan’s Wake). Among his other talents and skills, he’s a linguist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of accents and dialect. Although I haven’t lived in Hampshire for decades, and thought I’d lost the annoying burr, he located my accent to within ten miles of where I was born.
Impressive man, I’ll wager. ‘Quark’ is a bloody annoying word though.
‘The Quark and the Jaguar’ is staring at me from across the room as I type. It’s like the Mona Lisa - looking at me wherever I am in the room. I’ll read it one day.
