Unregistered Schools

Leisure pursuit. I like that.

Not sure the religious will, but the wealthy won’t mind(unless it interferes with tax avoidance). What do you think?

No separation by faith or wealth and no school charitable status, unless all schools have the same . You agree?

How about a radical idea?

Segregate schools based on ability? Then target the education to their ability.

No religion no wealth just ability.

Nah that would never work. No evidence to show that system empowered anyone…

Schools, or in school Phil?

I can definitely go along with the second, but the first just promotes elitist feelings for those going to the smarter school, whilst the latter makes all abilities mix(not in the classroom admittedly).

The poor hygiene photo reminds of a kitchen in a shared house I lived in during my student days in Brizzel.

Kids develop at different speeds though @dubai_phil , if you start holding them back early the late bloomers will never get the education they need and vice-versa, some kids are really bright early on and then flounder…

Streams in schools is the best answer I think.

Bit harsh @sadoldgit , @barry-sanchez is actually raising a valid, non hysterical, issue.

And what would that agenda be Barry?

As a man of the world, I know that there are countries in the world that have no state education. I know that in many of these countries, religious institutions are the only people providing education, and that usually comes at the cost of indoctrination. Pakistan is particularly afflicted.

As someone that has followed education policy for the last quarter of a century, I know the place of private schools, and that we have legal faith schools that practice their faiths to varying degrees, but can all be inspected because we know they exist. They’re registered.

Barry has utterly surprised me by starting a very interesting thread. It’s about unregistered schools, those that purposefully operate outside the bounds of the law, are not subject to any real oversight and perhaps unsurprisingly, are now being mentioned in relation to abuse.

These are highly coercive environments, some of the survivor stories are horrific, the least of which involves teenagers born in Britain not being able to speak English with any fluency, some of the worst of which involves the grim content in Barry’s eventually linked article.

I reckon the topic has a specific merit of its own. My personal view is that these schools must be appalling for the individuals concerned and corrosive for society at large.

It’s another of Barry’s favourite hobbyhorses though BT. 1. How crap Southampton FC is. 2. How crap religion is.

It’s not the only hobby horse that people like a little go on.

Another thoroughbred galloping across forums and social media is playing the poster, and not the post. I don’t claim to be innocent on this, but at the same time, can’t point to many better examples of the practice than the post I’m replying to.

Sorry to downvote SOG, but you’ve really got to let it go. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Barry starting a thread about this (although he could have linked the article straight away), and no need to post snide comments about him when he does. Sorry, I don’t want to offend but that’s my opinion.

My comment about what the Chinese had to say was meant to be an attempt at levity. Obviously the joke fell flat! Regarding playing the poster and not the post. The poster in question has called me many different names on here without sanction. I am not sure what the difference is between playing the poster and abusing them? Is it like football where you can call someone a cunt and get away with it but kick them up in the air and you will be sent off?

Isn’t everyone on the board pretty much in agreement on this? I wonder, are there any members who would profess to follow a religion. And, for the majority, I wonder how many of you who have kids send those kids to religious schools, despite not following any religion.

I have friends who have gone through the facade of attending church services for months, getting their kids baptised etc just to get them into the local CofE. I have other friends who have ‘rediscovered’ their long forgotten Catholic faith and, lo-and-behold, their kids get admitted to the local Catholic school.

I’ve known people who have done this and, for the life of me, I can’t understand why? Well I can understand if the school is perceived to be a "top " school but it just doesn’t sit right with me.

The school shouldn’t be allowed to discriminate like this in the first place.
