Var

So, after the Chelsea v Norwich game what do you think?

Personally I think it worked well, despite what the studio said about the Wllian “penalty”, IMHO, the ref and VAR got it right.

Thought Chelsea should have had 2 penalties. Pedro dived though.

I take it you mean the Willian and Morata incidents?

I thought the Willian call was just about right, yes he was touched but he exaggerated the dive, he could have stayed on his feet and scored.

If you look at his legs after his left (??) foot was clipped they both go backwards even though his right leg was forward, also he was on his way down before being clipped!

Morata had arms around his chest and shoulders, again he could have stayed on his feet, when he did go down he threw himself forward. If someone is pulling on your shoulders/upper torso you fall backwards not forwards…

One thing that really annoys me is the pundits general line “He was touched he has a right to go down”,

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t football a contact sport? Surely it’s about the amount of contact, we see it week in and week out in the PL, worse in the Spanish leagues, a player feels a feather touch and goes down as if he’'s shot. It’s cheating pure and simple.

How many times have you heard a pundit say “He won that free kick!”? Isn’t that admitting that the player cheated?

I’m ranting, breathe in, exhale and reeeelaxxxxxx…

If Willian had a chance to shoot why wouldnt he take it? I thought that one was a clear penalty. The other, his hands were all over him. We call for penalties when people do that from corners. I apply the Saints test to these things and in both I would have been pissed off if they hadnt been given for us and not surprised if we had conceeded them. I’ve seen Fonte give pens away like that Morata one. Still, I guess it just goes to show how subjective the whole thing is!

That pissed me off too last night, just how easy it was to blow Morata over…he made no attempt to get past his opponent…feel a hand on you shoulder you go down.

What I hope VAR will do is to toughen up the game, remove the feeling that any contact means you’re entitled to go down. That has to be the stated intention of the Referee’s Association; they will be given the opportunity to turn back the clock but I’m afraid they will probably fudge it again.

And that there is the problem.

Penalty claims are subjective, things like offside and was the ball out are pretty much easy to see.

Handballs, fouls, trips, pulling, whatever it’s all in the eye of the beholder for this reason VAR shouldn’t be used for penalty claims.

Conte makes a fair point in this inteview, he says the ref should wait before making a decision.

He also says the Morata incident wasn’t a penalty (so there @sadoldgit :lou_lol:)

I’ve seen them given! I need to see it again, but he was grabbing him. I’ve watched the Willian one again this morning and think that was definately a pen.

Good thread, @btripz .

I often think about making up threads where I post stuff I don’t believe just to generate traffic.

I mean, only a complete twat would think that Willian wasn’t fouled for the penalty.

Keep it up!

Though tbf it looks like he could have stayed on his feet rather than “fallen” over - reminiscent of Susan a couple of times every game?

Oh, please don’t humour him @cobham-saint .

I thought it was a pen, all the professionals in the MoTD studio thought it was a pen, Willian thought it was a pen and even the bloke that was accused of fouling Willian said that he had fouled Willian and that he thought it was a pen.

VAR died last night.

RIP.

OK, that’s the BBC’s tennis page, @btripz .

Instead of Conte, did you mean that Konta makes a fair point in the interview?

As an aside, I’ve always thought that Konta has a couple of fair points, but I’m not sure I’d rush to her for commentary on the accuracy of refereeing decisions in football.

Oh FFS

Lesson number 1, don’t link to BBC Sport videos, it don’t work

Try this link instead

Lesson 2, @saintbletch is a cunt :lou_lol:

I’d sooner be a cunt that knows when a penalty is a penalty than just a cunt.

Perhaps that is the answer. Do away with technology and just ask the alleged perpetrator if they thought it was a penalty.

Fair play, @btripz , Johanna Konta does make a fair point.

The umpire should have waited for hawk-eye before issuing a code violation.

You needed lessons to determine this? #BTdumbass :lou_wink_2:

I love VAR and think it’s a wonderful thing. It’s just having a few teething problems… like the fact that it’s a massively fucked way of doing it.

With this specific pen thing, I think the problem is that the directive they have to follow is that they can only change the ref’s decision if there is a 100% cast iron error. I agree that in this case it was a 90% chance of an error, but there is still divided opinion on it so how could he change the ref’s original decision?

Exactly @themightyostrich VAR should only be used for factual decisions like ball out, is it a corner or a goal kick, offisides etc. etc. etc.

Subjective decisions like handballs and fouls shouldn’t be decided this way!
