Holy fucking Christ.

[paraphrasing]

Interviewer: Thereā€™s a concern about guns and mental health

Mel Bernstein: Yeah, well if you get a brain tumour nobody is going to spot that immediately (here Mel is displaying a shocking lack of understanding about the meaning of mental health).

[The piece ends with Mel walking around his house which is decorated like an American diner from the 60s. He discusses being bullied growing up in New York and having to pay 25c for protection and explains that when he got older it was his turn to do the bullying. As his wife died in an explosion a few years back Mel has no company anymore, so dotted around his home are fabric mannequins - all female. He talks to them (about guns and hotrods), drinks coffee with them, puts knickers on them (only when itā€™s cold). Heā€™s a good boyfriend he feels.]

I think Mel might have a ā€˜brain tumourā€™.

America - land of fruit and nuts.

Iā€™m afraid until the majority of Americans see a link between gun ownership and gun deaths, nothing will change.

Perhaps every American family should have to nominate one of their close relatives as expendable as they seem to be unconcerned when a mass shooting doesnā€™t involve one of theirs.

1 policeman dead and 4 injured in shooting

Thereā€™s a figure at the end of the article that says 15,000 people have been shot dead in America in 2017 (not including suicides). Thatā€™s almost beyond comprehension.

The world would be a better place if Kurt Vonnegut was in charge.

I thought Johnny Vegas was missing

There have been 11 school shootings in America since the start of the year. Thatā€™s not even a month. They donā€™t even make the news anymore. So the solution seems to be to arm the teachers.

So arm the mentally stable teachersā€¦which ones are those?

isnt their one that gets on fiver web?

Here we go yet again

No doubt the NRA will be saying the solution is more guns & Trump will send his commiserations which will have an effect as much as the square root of nothing.

18 shootings in schools now this year alone. At what point does enough become enough. I spent some time in Seattle a few years ago and dropped my friendsā€™ kids off at the school gate. There was a big sign up saying No Guns Beyond This Point. The signs donā€™t seem to be working Donald!

The american people are getting what they wanted. I can only think that might be a tiny chance of change if a senior NRA member lost a child in a school shooting. But even then, probably not.

So Florida senator Marco Rubio has proclaimed itā€™s too soon to discuss whether tighter gun laws could have prevented this attack, but I guess itā€™s always going to be too soon when there are attacks on a weekly basis.

I think the Americans use the right to carry guns the same as we use the right not to carry identity cards

Canā€™t see it. They are so ideologically entrenched that you would have more luck getting ISIS to embrace the western way of life.

Their solution will be more people carrying more guns

Yet more children sacrificed in the name of freedom. There just isnā€™t the will when itā€™s someone elses kid. Fuck 'em, fuck every last one of those freedom fighters! :lou_angry:

Prayers and condolences.
