Very Big Public Displays Of Ire

Just listening to In The Air Tonight on the radio and it reminds me of the Phil Collins video of the time. He was singing away and on the set was a workmate with pot of paint perched on the top. Didnt give it much thought at the time but later I read that it was a dig at his wife who had, apparently, been having it off with the painter and decorator. Dont get mad, get even!

How did that make it even? If his ex-wife had been forced to listen to In The Air Tonight on an endless loop for an hour or two* I could see it, but a pot of paint in a video doesn’t seem like much by way of score-settling.

* Anything more than that would really be unnecessary cruelty. She’d only shagged the painter, after all.

Cos when the P&D bro turned up to site without his paint pot, he got the tin tack yo. Either that, or Collins kept his wife’s severed nips pickled in emulsion. One of the two, I should imagine.

Once the story got out she had to live with the fact that the lyrics of the song (and a few others on the album too) relate to her infidelity. She will live on in rock/pop infamy as having shagged the hired help. I would say that was a pretty good payback.

OK, I now get it. I’ve never listened to the words of that song (in fact I’ve tried to avoid ever hearing it after the first time) so I didn’t lnow that.

I dont blame you! Another bit of pointless trivia - BBC stopped playing the song during Desert Storm (along with others) as they didnt want to upset listeners with war like references*. Perhaps they should have thought about upsetting them about playing many other records on grounds of taste!!

*Apparenly(I can hear it coming) In the Air Tonight was thought to be a problem as people might have thought it meant missiles and bombs!!!

That’s exactly the kind of limpwristed shit I’d expect Phil Collins to come up with. Anodyne Tory-voting shitstick.

In his defence he did also have the bloke killed.

Yeah, sat him in a room and made him listen to the Phil Collins back catalogue on loop!!

As a side note, I was reading an article by his ex wife last night written last year when he announced that he could be returning after his “retirement.” She said she was fed up with being painted (see what I did there?) as the bad person. That he had had affairs before she did. That he buggered of on a two year tour with Genesis just as she had given birth to their first child and apparently behaved like a complete cock towards her. She admitted that she made “a mistake” but feels that she has been made to pay for hers over and over (every time In The Air Tonight gets palyed) whereas he gets away scot free. She also said that she didnt leave him and that he divorced her. I hope that this has redressed the balance former Mrs Collins?

Moving on…

Another favourite of mine was the classic “I would love it if we beat them, love it” rant of Keegan aimed at Fergie. TV gold.
