The story

The division amongst Arsenal fans with regards to Arsene Wenger’s continued reign as the club’s manager was put in ‘plane’ sight at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal’s failure to compete for either the Premier League or Champions League has convinced some fans that Wenger should leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

They made their feelings clear by crowdfunding an aeroplane to tow a banner reading ‘No Contract #Wenger Out’ over the ground during their Premier League match against West Brom on Saturday.

A counter-banner was soon fighting for airspace with a message of support for Wenger

But in farcical scenes, that aeroplane was soon joined by another towing a banner reading ‘In Arsene We Trust #RespectAW’.

As a result, the opening 25 minutes of television coverage from the Hawthorns was accompanied with the constant humming of planes flying overhead.

Unhappy Arsenal fans raised almost £3,000 after launching a crowdfunding page on JustGiving earlier this week with the aim of raising money for demonstrations against the Frenchman.

Much of that money was spent on hiring the plane but their message was undermined by the unexpected arrival of another aircraft towing a banner of support for the 67-year-old.

Sportsmail understands Wenger has a two-year contract worth £8million-a-year on the table from Arsenal but a final decision on his future will not be made until the last days of the season.

Arsenal’s success in the FA Cup and in reaching the top four in the Premier League is likely to have a major impact on whether he signs or leaves.

Gunners reacted on Twitter and some were less than impressed with the protests before the game.

Going the extra mile and adding the hashtag only adds to the ‘idiot effect’

Some found the ‘Wenger out’ banner so annoying that they changed their mindset altogether

Some may think flying a plane over a stadium before a game will be futile

At least it didn’t cost them any points…

Though to be fair Tadic missed a sitter from a similar position today.

I’m trying to forget that. Now you have made me notice i can’t spell as well.

Not a great day. :lou_sad:
