YouTube and other types of video

We’ve had a couple of questions concerning how to embed certain types of media into your posts, such as YouTube, Vimeo, Vine and the like. I think a big part of the problem is that we don’t have a button for it in the editor. Also, some people fear change.

All you have to do to include a YouTube movie is paste the address of the YouTube vid into your post.

The forum pros usually employ the old Control-V paste keyboard shortcut. Right clicking the edit window brings up unhelpful table options.

The forum will automatically determine that this is a YouTube vid, and spit out the correct code to show it in your post.

This should also work for Vimeo, Instagram, Vine and Screenr.

EDIT:

REMEMBER KIDS, JUST PASTE THE LINK. IT SHOULD LOOK JUST LIKE ANY OTHER PIECE OF TEXT WHEN YOU’RE EDITING.

Any support for Vines, papster?

I get a lot of hilarious Vines, and I’d love to be able to share them with you all.

Took a brief look at this and have proved the concept. The only pain in the arse is doing the look up for the actual video (and specifically, not doing it too many times). Vine does a bit of redirection to keep URLs short. Will try to get it in this week.

Vine support should be in. Same deal as all other video types. Copy and paste your link, and it should just work.

Message received and understood. Bletch has got form with humour-based hyperbole. The Hilarious Fun With Words With Bletch thread was fun, and interesting, but it was not hilarious.

Of course, this could all be reverse psychology on our part to get bletch to whip out the truly amusing Vines. All killer, no filler. You hearing us, bletch?

Yes chief I’m hearing you (I also heard you).

So, if I’ve got this right, you want me to recreate the “saintbletch hilarious fun with words thread” thread, ASAP, but I need to add the word ironic in there somewhere.

I’ll get on it when I’m at my desk.

Thanks for your support guys!

Says the Bear that just posted the video of a bloke dropping a cymbal and then saluting.

You’ve set the standard too high, Bear.

BTW pap, I think other plugins (TSW for instance) ask you to post just the Vine ID.

I’m guessing there must be a Vine API that gives you the url from the vine ID. Then again you probably know this and you’re experiencing another level of redirection under that.

Yeah, not sure that’s easily achievable, or even desirable. The situation right now is quite sweet. The outgoing text is parsed and checks for anything that could be embedded. This includes YouTube, Vimeo, Vines, etc. The beauty of this approach is that irrespective of source, the user has just got the same job; copy and paste a link.

I think other sites manage it because they use BBCode, and use an explicit wrapper which indicates what kind of key it is. If we didn’t have the surrounding BBCode markup, I’m not sure how I would easily distinguish between say, a YouTube key and a Vine key, which both seem to consist of a series of case-sensitive alpha-numeric characters.

I’m quite happy with the present setup and am not that sure that going to something “simpler” is actually going to be simpler, either for users or for me.
