Unusually for me, I have seen three movies in quite quick succession: The Revenant, Dadâs Army and Foxcatcher. The first one I saw by choice; the second and third I was sort of coerced into seeing. Anyway, FWIW, this is what I thought about them:
The Revenant: I see that this has got mixed reviews on here; the review that comes nearest to mine - indeed, almost identical to mine - is that of Bucks above ⌠although I did think that the story line was a little contrived in places; for instance, how was it that the fort spared so many men to search for LdCâs son yet (conveniently) only 2 men to track down the bad guy? Also, there was a point where I found myself questioning why the bad guy didnât just kill LdC when he had the chance. But, you get this sort of thing in most films, and it didnât detract from what I thought was an excellent movie, and one that gripped me throughout.
Dadâs Army. I didnât want to see this movie because I suspected that it would fall into the category of There Are Some Things That Need To Be Left Alone And Not Repeated. Having now seen it, I still feel that way; but Iâm happy to concede that the casting department did a good job with some of the characters, and that the film had one or two mildly amusing moments, and that Catherine Zeta Jones is still nice to look at.
The Foxcatcher. This film is based on a true story apparently. Itâs quite slow paced and probably wouldnât be everyoneâs cup of tea - for instance, I overheard the fella in front of me describe it as âtediousâ - but I found it to be an enthralling human and psychological drama and an interesting study of what can happen when individuals come under the control of wealthy patrons. It also contains some good acting performances, imo.
Pls donât watch Deadpool, it only encourages them. It might be quite good film, I wouldnât know, but if you watch Deadpool now, youâll be watching Deadpool movies for the rest of your life, I guarantee it. Youâll be watching Deadpool 12 part 6: Stil Swimminâ Still Dead, in 20 years time, starring RoboReynolds Unit #3.701a, and youâll be bored out of your fucking skull. Youâll lean over to your bird, squeeze her arm, and say, âRemember when there were movies that werenât capeshit?â and sheâll say, âNo.â
Iâm starting a movement. Join us! Weâre called Justice League Squad Of Ppl Who Are Fed Up Back Teeth With Fucking Capeshit. Itâs not a great acronym, but itâs all weâve got so far. Weâre a small gang of underdogs standing up against the overwhelming tyrany of capeshit. In many ways, weâre like superheroes.
One day theyâll make a movie about us, and it will be utter capeshit.
When JLS were on the X-Factor, I insisted to my family that their name stood for âJustice League of Southamptonâ, despite them not coming from Southampton, and despite them stating quite explicitly that it stood for âJack the Lad Swingâ.
Recently saw Dads Army and would agree with HS in that they have done a good job in casting and that there are a few chuckles in it, although I thought it would be funnier than it is. What you have is a warm homage to what was a classic TV sitcom and it is non the worse for that (get me, sounding all Barry Norman). A nice bit of nostalgia but not a must see.
From the way these bastards go on Flahute, youâd think it was only acceptable to watch worthy French dramas while chomping Camembert and smoking Gitannes. That, or Mark Kermode.
Anyway, I went to see Deadpool this evening with the missus and Juvenile Unit #2. I was entertained first to last; great dialogue and some lovely OTT action scenes. Loved the scenes with the taxi driver, and as Super Michael has remarked, the fourth wall stuff is fantastic too, especially a certain quip about the number of available X-Men.
Definitely one of the better Fox Marvel films, if not the best.
Downloaded it to watch soon, thanks. Tonight I watched Margin Call. It is a 2011 film but again based on the US bank collapse, it follows a 24 hour period as the shit hits the fan. Strong cast including Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore. Interesting story if you like to know more about how quickly things unwound, but probably not more than a 7/10 otherwise.
