Stat Pack: Arsenal vs Saints

Show/hide article…

• Charlie Austin has scored seven goals in his last 10 Premier League starts for Southampton, including three in his last two.

• Austin has yet to feature for Saints against the Gunners, but has scored in both of his previous two Premier League appearances against Arsenal, although he ended up on the losing side for QPR on each occasion.

• Fraser Forster has conceded just five goals in his five Premier League games against Arsenal, despite the Gunners having 30 shots on target against the Saints keeper.

• Southampton have only lost one of their last six home Premier League games against Arsenal, winning two and drawing three, although it was in the last meeting, back in May, that they were beaten – 0-2.

• Arsenal haven’t won successive away league games against Southampton since August 1997.

• However, the Gunners did win twice at St Mary’s last season, earning a 5-0 victory in an FA Cup fourth-round match, thanks to a Theo Walcott hat-trick, and a 2-0 win in the Premier League.

• Southampton have never lost three home games in all competitions against a single opponent in a calendar year, while Arsenal last won three away matches against an opponent in a calendar year in 1987, against Spurs (on that occasion, they actually managed four wins).

• Only two Arsenal players have scored more goals in their first 15 Premier League appearances for the club than Alexandre Lacazette (8) – Alexis Sanchez (9) and Ian Wright (10).

• The Gunners have lost 11 league matches in 2017, their worst tally in a calendar year since 1995, when they were beaten 14 times.

• However, Arsenal have already recovered as many points from losing positions this season as they managed in the entirety of last season, with nine, and have won more matches from behind this season (three) than last season (two).

GW16 Ones to watch: Charlie Austin

Show/hide article…

The Scout is selecting five Fantasy Premier League players set to make an impact in Gameweek 16.

The prospect of Austin earning starts and scoring goals should be welcomed by FPL managers.

With a lack of convincing cut-price options up front, the Southampton striker can step up to fill the void.

Austin was handed a first start of the season against Everton in Gameweek 13. He responded with a brace and a 13-point return.

Rested at Manchester City, he then returned to the teamsheet with another strike in the 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth.

His underlying statistics in these matches are impressive.

Despite being limited to a seven-minute cameo at the Etihad Stadium, Austin has produced eight shots in the opposition penalty area in the last three Gameweeks.

Alvaro Morata (£10.8m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£10.3m) are the only forwards to record more during this period, with 10 apiece.

Indeed, over the season as a whole, Austin is averaging a shot every 21 minutes.

Only Harry Kane (£12.8m and 15.2 minutes) and Daniel Sturridge (£8.0m and 20.5 minutes) can better that among forwards who have earned at least one start.

While the Gunners defence has impressed with five of seven clean sheets at Emirates Stadium, they have remained vulnerable on their travels.

Arsene Wenger’s backline shipped seven goals in three away matches prior to the clean sheet at Burnley in Gameweek 13.

Following Sunday’s encounter, Austin’s run of home fixtures adds to his appeal.

The next three opponents at St Mary’s Stadium all score just two in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR).

Just over 18,000 managers have moved to acquire Austin ahead of Gameweek 16.

But his stock will boom if he can breach the Arsenal defence to maintain his run of goals.

Spurs tickets sold out

Show/hide article…

More than 3,000 Southampton fans will make the trip to Wembley Stadium for the Boxing Day clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Saints’ allocation of tickets for the Premier League game has now completely sold out, meaning Mauricio Pellegrino’s side will once again this season have tremendous backing on the road.

A total of 3,070 Southampton supporters are due to make the trip to London for the 12.30pm GMT kick-off.

Fans were able to benefit from a generous offer from main club sponsor Virgin Media, who subsidised both tickets – with none costing more than £20 – and official travel for the fixture.

Thanks to all of our supporters once again for your incredible support!
