Transfer Rater: Jorginho to Man United, Mario Lemina to Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

The path between Southampton and Liverpool has been well trodden in recent years with Virgil van Dijk the last player to move between St Mary’s and Anfield in January. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp looks set to return to the south coast this summer to make a move for Lemina. According to French sports daily L’Equipe, the club are keen to bring the Gabon star to Anfield this summer after he impressed for Southampton following a £15 million switch from Juventus last August. The 24-year-old would join Naby Keita who has already agreed to move from RB Leipzig.

A few years ago, Borussia Dortmund winger Reus had the world at his feet. But serious injuries in 2016 and 2017 have robbed the Germany international of regular football in the last few years, ruling him out of action for more than a year in total. Now 28, Reus is out of contract at the Westfalenstadion next summer and is stalling on signing a new deal with the Bundesliga side. That, according to the Daily Mirror, has opened the door for Tottenham who are readying a bid for the winger.

Bournemouth midfielder Arter was a West Ham transfer target in the January window but a deal failed to materialise. West Ham had two bids, the second worth up to £8m, rejected by Bournemouth who signed Arter from Woking for just £8,000 in 2010. However, according to the Daily Express, West Ham boss David Moyes will return with a fresh offer for the Republic of Ireland international this summer. Midfield remains an area which needs strengthening in Moyes’ view, even after the loan addition of Joao Mario in January.

Napoli are top of Serie A and have focused all their energies this season on ending Juventus’ dominance by denying them a seventh straight Scudetto. Central to that has been the form of Brazil-born Italy international Jorginho. Reported as a Liverpool transfer target earlier in the week, the deep-lying playmaker is now reportedly on Jose Mourinho’s summer wishlist. United, according to the Daily Star, are prepared to fork out more than £50m to bag Jorginho. Mourinho needs midfield reinforcements with Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini expected to leave on a free transfer this summer.

Chelsea have made a habit of raiding Serie A side Roma recently with Emerson Palmieri moving from the Eternal City in January, while a move for Edin Dzeko collapsed late on. The Blues, regardless of whether head coach Antonio Conte remains at the club or not, will reportedly return to Rome this summer with an offer for the versatile Florenzi - according to Corriere dello Sport. The winger/full-back is out of contract next summer and is said to be reluctant to sign an extension to remain at the Stadio Olimpico. Manchester United have also shown an interest in the 26-year-old.

U18s Arsenal clash postponed

Show/hide article…

With freezing temperatures and snow causing travel disruption across the country, Southampton Under-18s’ league fixture against Arsenal has been postponed until a later date.

Saints’ youngsters were due to host Arsenal at Staplewood Campus tomorrow morning, but are now facing a second consecutive fixture postponement, after last week’s Swansea game was also cancelled.

Craig Fleming’s side are on a nine game unbeaten streak in the Under-18s Premier League (W8, D1), and currently trail second placed Arsenal by three points.

Both Swansea and Arsenal fixtures will be rescheduled over the coming weeks.

Southampton v Stoke City

Show/hide article…

Southampton pair Steven Davis and Shane Long are both nursing minor injuries and will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s game.

Charlie Austin remains out of contention because of a hamstring injury but is edging close to a return.

Peter Crouch and Ryan Shawcross are both available for Stoke after recovering from ankle injuries.

Goalkeeper Lee Grant is out with a wrist injury, while Stephen Ireland remains sidelined by a calf problem.

Conor McNamara: "The build-up to this game has been as much about watching the weather forecast as the team news. Southampton’s Friday press conference was cancelled but, as of the time of writing these notes, the Premier League say the game is going ahead.

"The freeze has been coming for some time at St Mary’s. Southampton were in the top 10 in November, but one win in 15 league matches has seen their position plummet like the temperatures.

“It’s a huge opportunity for Stoke to jump out of the bottom three. Paul Lambert has steadied the ship since taking charge, losing only one of his five league games.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "We have to put everything on the pitch, try to finish empty with our energy and give 100%.

“We need togetherness from every single fan, from every single player, to be together, to try to play our football and to be brave in character.”

Stoke City manager Paul Lambert: "Our form is really good. I can’t fault the way the lads have played. Apart from individual errors we would have picked up six points from our last two games rather than just two.

“I don’t have fear going into matches because of the way we are playing. We have shown we are more than capable of winning games.”

Both teams need to keep chipping away but home form is going to be very important for all of the sides down at the bottom, and I think Saints will get the win here.

Opposition View: Stoke City

Show/hide article…

The Potters last two results have both been 1-1 draws against Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City respectively.

And ahead of another important clash, the Stoke boss feels the could have had more in recent weeks.

“Our form is really good. I can’t fault the lads the way they’re playing. In the last two games we’ve had individual errors where we might have otherwise picked up six points,” Lambert reflected.

“But that’s football. I don’t have a problem with how we’re playing at the minute because we’re doing really well.

“When I first came in I said we had 15 cup finals and my view hasn’t changed. I don’t think the results have given us what the performances have merited but we’ll go to Southampton and try to win.

“I’ve no fear or trepidation going into games, I think we are going to win them and the way the lads are playing shows they’re more than capable.”

Saints head into the game in 16th position in the Premier League and needing a win themselves.

Manolo Gabbiadini earned a last-gasp point at Turf Moor last weekend, and Lambert says few would have expected both sides to have been in this position.

He added: “They’re probably the same as ourselves. Nobody expected them to be in the position they’re in.

“You’ve got to try and fight to get out of it, but the league is difficult. One win takes you up a few places and a defeat takes you down.

“At the start of the season, I don’t think anyone would have been predicting them to be where they are either.”

Match Preview: Saints vs Stoke

Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

Southampton vs Stoke City

Saturday 3rd March, 3pm GMT

St Mary’s

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Plenty. With the two sides separated by just a single point in the Premier League table, there is much to play for in the survival race.

Stoke sit second-bottom and need a win to climb out of the drop zone and leapfrog Southampton in the process.

The Potters have lost just one of their five games under Paul Lambert, but the new boss has not tasted victory since his first match at the helm back in January.

Saints have suffered only one defeat in their last nine in all competitions, but three of their four wins in that period have come in the FA Cup.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Shane Long and skipper Steven Davis have both missed Saints’ last two matches and are doubts for Saturday’s game. Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin remain sidelined.

Stoke: Captain Ryan Shawcross and former Saint Peter Crouch are both in contention having been absent in recent weeks. Jakob Haugaard will be the substitute goalkeeper after Lee Grant broke a bone in his wrist in training.

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

Burnley (a) D 1-1

West Brom (a) W 2-1 (FA Cup)

Liverpool (h) L 0-2

West Brom (a) W 3-2

Brighton (h) D 1-1

Stoke’s previous five:

Leicester (a) D 1-1

Brighton (h) D 1-1

Bournemouth (a) L 1-2

Watford (h) D 0-0

Huddersfield (h) W 2-0

TOP PERFORMERS

James Ward-Prowse’s set-pieces have been causing havoc in recent weeks, scoring once and assisting three times from dead balls in his last five appearances. Substitute Josh Sims made a big impact off the bench at Burnley last time out, while Guido Carrillo’s second assist in two games set up Manolo Gabbiadini, who moved on to four goals for the season with a late equaliser at Turf Moor.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (6), Manolo Gabbiadini (4), Dušan Tadić (4), James Ward-Prowse (4)

Most assists: Ryan Bertrand (3), Nathan Redmond (3), Dušan Tadić (3), James Ward-Prowse (3)

Xherdan Shaqiri has been on a virtual one-man mission to save Stoke from relegation. The Swiss international has scored in his last three matches – the first time in his career he has accomplished the feat. The last Stoke player other than Shaqiri to score a goal was Mame Biram Diouf against Huddersfield six weeks ago.

Top scorers: Xherdan Shaqiri (7), Mame Biram Diouf (5), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (4)

Most assists: Xherdan Shaqiri (6), Joe Allen (5), Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (5)

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

All-time record:

Played: 78

Southampton: 34

Draws: 14

Stoke: 30

Previous four meetings:

September 2017: Stoke 2-1 Southampton (Yoshida)

May 2017: Southampton 0-1 Stoke

December 2016: Stoke 0-0 Southampton

March 2016: Stoke 1-2 Southampton (Pellè 2)

DID YOU KNOW?

Stoke won the reverse fixture back in September 2-1 – they haven’t won both league meetings in a season against Southampton for 50 years, since the 1967/68 top-flight campaign.

The Potters have shipped a league-high 54 Premier League goals this season. Indeed, Paul Lambert’s men have been on the receiving end on three of the 13 occasions a team has scored five or more goals in a Premier League match this season, more than any other side.
