Arsenal and Liverpool in top-four fight, Chelsea face trip to West Ham

Show/hide article…

Chelsea are marching ever closer to the Premier League title, but behind them, the action is really hotting up.

Arsenal’s hopes of winning the trophy for the first time in 13 years appear all but over and the same goes for Liverpool, who haven’t triumphed since 1990. The pair clash at Anfield on Saturday with the focus primarily on qualifying for the Champions League for next season.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have been stuck in sixth for months but that could finally change if they beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Saturday.

And at the bottom, there’s a huge match in store as Leicester face Hull at the King Power Stadium. Predict the outcome of all the matches by voting in our match polls.

LIVERPOOL: These teams have shared 31 goals in their last seven clashes so expect fireworks. Liverpool turn it on when you least expect it; Arsenal always have a point to prove once they’re out of the title race. A draw is no use to either, but a draw is what they’ll get.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal – Steven Kelly

ARSENAL: Arsenal have struggled against the bigger teams this season and Liverpool have excelled, but Jurgen Klopp’s side are in awful form and may only get a point this time.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal – Tom Adams

WEST HAM: West Ham have already beaten Chelsea at the London Stadium in the EFL Cup, but it’s a brave gambler who bets against the west London side in the league. Without the suspended Michail Antonio, the Hammers will struggle to break down Chelsea and a repeat of last season’s spectacular 2-1 win looks unlikely.

Prediction: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea – Peter Thorne

CHELSEA: Chelsea need to replicate their sparkling home form on the road if they are to maintain their significant advantage at the top of the Premier League. The Blues won’t find a better opportunity to do this than the London Stadium, where West Ham continue to struggle. Antonio Conte’s side have the discipline, class and skill to win what promises to be an intense and keenly contested derby.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Chelsea – Mark Worrall

TOTTENHAM: Everton are unbeaten in nine Premier League games and Romelu Lukaku is level with Harry Kane at the top of the goalscoring chart. But Everton’s away form is not quite as impressive as their results at home – they have drawn three of their last four trips outside of Goodison Park, at Hull, Stoke and Middlesbrough – while Spurs have won their last 10 matches at White Hart Lane in all competitions.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Everton – Ben Pearce

EVERTON: This trip to Tottenham is a good test of how Everton have improved since the two teams contested a 1-1 draw on opening day. After a winnable run of matches, the Blues’ nine-game unbeaten streak faces a stern test at a ground on which they have a miserable recent record.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Everton – Luke O’Farrell

MAN UNITED: Manchester United have dropped far too many points in games they should have won. They must break this habit against Bournemouth. On the back of a successful day out at Wembley, motivation in the squad should be high. Top four is within touching distance now. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in top form, with seven goals in his last six appearances, and will be looking to do all he can to ensure Champions League qualification for next season. It’s a must-win.

Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Bournemouth – Scott Patterson

BOURNEMOUTH: The Cherries are in an awful run of form and the last thing they need is a trip north to Old Trafford to take on the newly crowned EFL Cup winners. Their defending has been woeful all season and Ibrahimovic is likely to have a lot of joy.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Bournemouth – Will Kent

SUNDERLAND: In four successive seasons, Sunderland defied the odds and beat Manchester City 1-0 at home. That sequence ended in 2013 and now only a monumental display from David Moyes’ earnest but poor side, or a serious off day for City, stands between Pep Guardiola and a comfortable away win.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-3 Manchester City – Colin Randall

MAN CITY: With 10 goals scored in the last two games, a rampant and ever-improving Manchester City face a wobbly Sunderland defence that has conceded six in its last two attempts. The reverse fixture from the season’s opener promises more goals than the total of three scored on that occasion.

Prediction: Sunderland 2-4 Manchester City – Simon Curtis

LEICESTER: After a sensational 3-1 win over Liverpool where Leicester actually looked like Premier League champions, the Foxes face a massive home fixture with Hull City – the side who surprisingly beat them 2-1 on opening day, somewhat foreshadowing City’s dip in form. Victory will ensure a corner has been turned and substantially ease relegation fears. Defeat will undo all the good work against the Reds and prove another false dawn.

Prediction: Leicester 3-0 Hull – Ben Jacobs

HULL CITY: Just over a week ago this looked to be an inviting game for Hull City. Now? Much less so. Leicester’s change in management might have been brutal, but their dramatically improved performance against Liverpool would suggest they’re better off without Claudio Ranieri. The Tigers have picked up their own away form under Marco Silva and will learn from Liverpool’s mistakes with a more conservative approach. Defend well and Silva’s men can collect a point.

Prediction: Leicester 1-1 Hull – Phil Buckingham

SWANSEA: Burnley have yet to win away from home and while Swansea suffered something of an off day last Saturday against Chelsea, they should be fired up for this one. Their next four games are all winnable fixtures and a good run this month will secure the club’s Premier League future.

Prediction: Swansea 1-0 Burnley – Max Hicks

BURNLEY: The return of Jeff Hendrick from suspension boosts Sean Dyche’s options as the Clarets look to follow up a good point at Hull last time out. Another 1-1 draw is certainly possible, edging Burnley closer to the magic 40-point mark.

Prediction: Swansea 1-1 Burnley – Jamie Smith

WEST BROM: Tony Pulis faces former club Crystal Palace with West Brom’s Premier League safety already secured. West Brom will want to continue their recent outstanding home form and provide a springboard for the rest of the season, ideally with Salomon Rondon breaking his 11-game goalless run in the process.

Prediction: West Brom 2-0 Crystal Palace – Matthew Evans

CRYSTAL PALACE: Palace’s new-found mettle might just give the Eagles some hope of collecting a meaningful result. West Brom’s form has been impressive at home but as the Bournemouth game proved, they are still susceptible to conceding.

Prediction: West Brom 1-1 Crystal Palace – Rob Sutherland

WATFORD: Watford’s creativity will be hampered by a season-ending injury to Mauro Zarate, with fellow attacking option Isaac Success seemingly not fit enough for anything other than a cameo appearance. The right-back riddle remains unsolved after Daryl Janmaat limped off against West Ham, so Craig Catchcart is likely to start. The visit of Southampton will provide a stern test for a less-than-convincing back line and Hornets supporters will be hopeful of a return to the side for centre-back Sebastian Prodl.

Prediction: Watford 1-1 Southampton – Mike Parkin

SOUTHAMPTON: Southampton are still heartbroken after last weekend’s cruel EFL Cup final defeat, but need to pick themselves up quickly to avoid their Premier League season petering out. The south coast side are hoping in-form Manolo Gabbiadini can help them improve a miserable run of only two wins in 22 trips to Vicarage Road.

Prediction: Watford 1-1 Southampton – Alex Crook

STOKE: The visit of lowly Middlesbrough is perfect for a Stoke side who are yet to beat top-half opposition this season, but they will still need to break down a well-drilled defence. It would help if Mark Hughes introduced some pace and movement into the team, but it’s more likely that the starting XI will remain unchanged and underwhelm their way to a narrow victory at best.

Prediction: Stoke 1-0 Middlesbrough – James Whittaker

MIDDLESBROUGH: Premier League survival continues to look like an uphill battle for Boro and a trip to Stoke doesn’t inspire much hope among fans whose patience with Aitor Karanka’s super-defensive setup is rapidly waning.

Prediction: Stoke 1-0 Middlesbrough – Catherine Wilson

Chelsea’s latest step on the road to winning the title takes them to West Ham on Monday night while Tottenham, who still harbour hopes of reeling the Blues in, host resurgent Everton on Sunday.

Man United will be looking for a favour from old boss Moyes as Sunderland host Manchester City and elsewhere, EFL Cup finalists Southampton will look to put last Sunday’s heartbreak behind them when they travel to Watford.

Portsmouth and Southampton engage in savage trolling, and there’s a clear winner

Show/hide article…

Portsmouth and Southampton don’t clash often on the pitch these days, but off it is a different matter.

Due to both clubs bouncing around the divisions in recent years, the pair have only played each other nine times since 2000, with the most recent meeting coming in the Championship in April 2012.

But that hasn’t dulled the rivalry one bit, even if they are reduced to playing it out over social media these days. And oh how they did that on Thursday evening.

It all started with Saints fan George ( @GeorgeSFCHowell on Twitter) enjoying a good bit of old-fashioned trolling of League Two’s Pompey, all in the form of a nice familiar rhyme.

Childish? Yes. But pretty funny? Yes. And a nice little distraction on what was a dull Thursday night with no meaningful football.

And Pompey could have just let it be, but they didn’t. They bit back and they bit hard, going in with:

And that’s true, they have.

Pompey won the top-flight in 1949 and 1950, as well as the FA Cup in 1939 and more memorably in 2008, whereas Saints have never won the top division and have just one FA Cup.

But bragging about 60-odd year old honours never goes down that well on Twitter, and Southampton - who played in the League Cup final last weekend and have been a fine Premier League team for a while now - had a great response, with the help of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Yep, there’s no coming back from that.

No fresh injury concerns for Puel

Show/hide article…

Saints dominated against Manchester United last weekend, but came away from Wembley empty-handed, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late second goal won it for José Mourinho’s side.

They now return to Premier League action, as they travel to Vicarage Road this weekend, and Puel says they will head there with the same squad as last Sunday.

“It’s the same injuries for us. For the other players, I think they can make a good recovery from the final and be fit for this game,” Puel said.

“The injury situation remains the same for this game. We have long injuries to Virgil, Charlie, Targett, Jérémy and Alex.

“For the other players they are in a good way, and have had good time to recover from the final.

“[The morale] is better than straight after the game. It was a strong game from us, with quality and character.

“We had all of the right ingredients for a final, the support from the fans was fantastic, but it was a bad result,” Puel continued.

“After the first disappointment, also now we have satisfaction to see our performance, which showed the quality we can put out on the pitch.

“We have to keep that confidence for Watford.”

Puel bemoans Southampton’s ‘crazy’ schedule

Show/hide article…

With league games against Manchester United and Arsenal yet to be rearranged, Southampton face only Watford and Tottenham Hotspur this month, a period of quiet that will be followed by a more testing run of six matches in April.

“My biggest job now is to prepare the team for the difficulty of the calendar. We will play two games in a month after playing every three days since the beginning of the season,” Puel told British media.

"It’s crazy – crazy for us and difficult. It’s difficult to keep good focus and concentration with a game every two weeks. That’s why this game is so important for us, and for the table.

“We’ve got to play against teams who play one game a week. All these are difficulties, they are good challenges, and we have to adapt to these conditions of the calendar.”

Southampton, who are 13th in the table, will look to move on from last weekend’s painful defeat by Manchester United in the final of the League Cup when they face 12th-placed Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
