Norwich 2 Southampton 2: Saints stunned by late Steven Naismith strike

Show/hide article…

And the Norwich striker did it again with a stoppage-time leveller against City’s Premier League visitors.

The Scotland international has never been a regular in the starting line-up since his £8.5million move from Everton a year ago.

He scored on his Canaries debut in that 5-4 thriller against Liverpool but has never seemed to have done enough to convince Alex Neil.

But another priceless header – in the 92nd minute – helped his side come from behind for a second time to ensure their number is in tomorrow night’s Fourth Round draw.

Norwich boss Neil said: “I was delighted for Steven. I thought he worked extremely hard, he was diligent and won important battles for us.

“He did the ugly side really well and he got his reward. It’s a good draw against a good side and I think it was competitive game and it was probably a fairish result.

“It’s an extra game and we have got a lot of players. We can now give some of them a game so I’m not disappointed.”

Puel weighing up Fonte’s inclusion in EFL Cup semi-final

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Paul will make a decision in the next forty-eight hours as to whether wantaway captain Jose Fonte will be involved in the EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Southampton host Liverpool in the first leg of the semi-final on Wednesday night but speculation persists over the future of their captain Fonte.

Southampton director Les Reed confirmed this week that Fonte, 33, had declared his intention to leave the club.

Everton and Manchester United were tracking Fonte last summer but Sportsmail understands that Southampton are still to receive any concrete interest in the player in this transfer window. Fonte did train as normal with the Southampton squad this week.

Fonte was left out of the Southampton squad entirely for the 2-2 draw at Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday and Puel did not deny afterwards that the player was left out due to his insistence on finding a move in January.

Puel also suggested Fonte may not be considered for action while his future remains in the balance.

'I don’t want to give a reason, just to understand the situation with the player and questions about his future. It is between Jose and the club and we will see in the future.

'I respect the possibility for Jose to see any opportunities in the window.

‘I will take a decision tomorrow or Monday (about his involvement in the Liverpool game).’

Southampton are understood to be considering a move for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho and Puel did not deny interest in the Frenchman.

‘It is speculation,’ Puel said. ‘We stay aware about possibilities and opportunities and particularly if a player comes available who can do good work.’

Man United boss Jose Mourinho to gamble: £45m January double swoop on the cards

Show/hide article…

The Daily Express claim the Manchester United boss is keen to bring the duo to Old Trafford to secure Champions League football. And the report says the Red Devils are on the verge of completing a £38m deal for Lindelof. A dispute between Benfica, and the Sweden international’s former club Vasteras, was holding up the switch.

“Jose Mourinho will spend £45m on Jose Fonte and Victor Lindelof” Mourinho has been delighted with the form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo but is still keen to add reinforcements with Eric Bailly heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations. And in the 4-0 win against Reading in the FA Cup yesterday, Rojo limped off with a muscle injury. Mourinho is also ready to battle Everton for Southampton defender Fonte how handed in a transfer request earlier this week.

The Portuguese, who won Euro 2016 in the summer, is looking for one more big move as he enters the twilight of his career. Ronald Koeman is keen to improve his defence and is ready to battle Mourinho for Fonte this January. United return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Hull in the semi-final of the EFL Cup.

Southampton’s Claude Puel refuses to discuss Jose Fonte’s future

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel refused to be drawn on why captain Jose Fonte was missing from the squad at Carrow Road as Norwich scored an injury-time equaliser to seal an FA Cup third-round replay.

Portugal defender Fonte was left out of the third-round clash completely after it was revealed earlier in the week the 33-year-old has asked to leave St Mary’s.

Fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk returned from suspension and opened the scoring with a volley, only for Steven Whittaker to level from the penalty spot after Saints’ 19-year-old debutant goalkeeper Harry Lewis fouled Cameron Jerome.

The Premier League side looked set to be into round four when Maya Yoshida nodded Southampton back in front, but Naismith’s last-gasp effort means the sides will have to meet again to see who will make it through.

Whether Fonte will be at the club by the time the replay comes around remains to be seen after Puel was cagey when answering questions on his future after the game in Norfolk.

“I think [executive director] Les Reed gave an interview about the situation, I have no comment,” he said. “I respect the possibility for Jose to see any opportunities in the window.”

Pushed on why he had omitted Fonte from his squad, the Frenchman replied: “I don’t want to give a reason, just to understand the situation with the player and questions about his future.”

Southampton face Liverpool in the first-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday but Puel would not be drawn as to whether Fonte will be involved.

“I will take a decision tomorrow or Monday,” he added. "You can understand I cannot give an answer about this. It is between Jose and the club and we will see in the future.

“It is always difficult for all the teams, although it is difficult this period it makes it important for us to manage this period as best as possible.”

The game was watched by less than 12,500 people as Norwich boss Alex Neil blamed the high ticket prices for keeping home fans away.

Neil was also less than pleased with defender Timm Klose, who was off the pitch when Yoshida headed Southampton back in front.

The defender had taken himself to the touchline after suffering a kick to his Achilles and received treatment before being replaced by Ryan Bennett.

But Neil wanted the Switzerland international to remain on the pitch so the Canaries were not left short at the back.

“Timm Klose goes down but decided to go off the pitch which I think is naive,” he said. "It leaves us defending with one last man. He could have gone down on the pitch and there is a stop in play and we can make a decision.

“He goes off at the side of the pitch and we are defending for the next three minutes, it comes right from where he would have been, that was really frustrating.”

Steven Naismith notches late on against Southampton to secure Norwich replay

Show/hide article…

Lewis, the 19-year-old signed from Joe Hart’s old club Shrewsbury, had given away a penalty for Norwich’s equaliser.

Lewis was relieved when Maya Yoshida then added to Virgil van Dijk’s volleyed opener but Naismith, left criminally unmarked by the Saints defence, had the last word.

Both sides made wholesale changes from their previous league line-ups, with Norwich making five, including Josh Murphy starting in place of twin brother Jacob, and Southampton eight.

Southampton gave Lewis the nod for a senior debut and named former Canary Nathan Redmond on the bench but it was no surprise that there was no sign of Saints captain Jose Fonte following his transfer request.

The first chances were Southampton’s but Shane Long poked wide before Dusan Tadic, having linked up with Long, saw his shot blocked by a defender.

Lewis was soon needed at the other end and dived to keep out Martin Olsson’s free-kick. Norwich were awarded another in a similar position 25 yards from goal but this time Lewis relxed as Alex Pritchard skied it well over.

Jonny Howson was next to have a go and saw his first-time effort deflected behind off a defender and although that corner came to nothing Cameron Jerome was on the end of the next one, forcing Lewis into another save.

Michael McGovern pulled off a fine save at the other end from Tadic’s free-kick after Alex Tettey had bundled Long over.

Long failed to hit the target after Norwich were caught short at the back but his next effort required McGovern to tip his header over.

Norwich sent the corner straight back to Tadic, who picked out van Dijk’s run to the back post and the Dutchman volleyed home a 38th-minute opener.

The two sides had met in the Premier League almost exactly a year ago, with Norwich, fighting an ultimately doomed bid to stay up, winning 1-0 thanks to a Tettey goal.

More than 27,000 attended on that occasion but this time round it was noticeable that many seats around Carrow Road remained empty in an attendance of just 12,479.

Norwich attempted a revival after the break with Josh Murphy firing an effort into the side-netting and Cameron Jerome seeing his shot charged down.

Suddenly Lewis’ debut turned into a nightmare as he conceded a clumsy penalty. His touch from van Dijk’s backpass was far too heavy, Jerome was first to the loose ball and the teenager brought him down. Up stepped Whittaker to make no mistake from the spot for a 52nd-minute equaliser.

McGovern did well to preserve parity with another fine save to tip over Tadic’s fierce drive, but he could do nothing about Yoshida’s emphatic header to make it 2-1 in the 67th minute. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg swung in a pacey cross from the right flank for the Japan defender to meet in the box.

Timm Klose, the Norwich centre-back, had been off the pitch getting treatment at the time and was replaced by Ryan Bennett straight after.

The goal boosted Lewis’ confidence and he pulled off a good near post stop to deny Jacob Murphy, who had replaced his twin, but the rookie keeper was left exposed by his defence in stoppage time when Naismith was left completely unmarked to head home Whittaker’s cross from the right.

Alex Neil, the Norwich manager, was critical of Klose for leaving the pitch before the second goal in his post-match assessment. “Timm Klose goes down but decided to go off the pitch which I think is naïve. It leaves us defending with one last man,” he said.

“He could have gone down on the pitch and there is a stop in play and we can make a decision. He goes off at the side of the pitch and we are defending for the next three minutes, it comes right from where he would have been, that was really frustrating.”

FA Cup R3: Bournemouth, West Brom, Stoke crash out as Wayne Rooney equals record

Show/hide article…

Bournemouth, West Brom and Stoke crashed out to lower-league opposition on a packed day of FA Cup action that saw Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney star.

Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goalscoring record as the FA Cup holders swept aside Reading 4-0 in their third-round tie.

Rooney flicked home his 249th Manchester United goal from Juan Mata’s seventh-minute cross as Jose Mourinho’s men ran out comfortable winners - but it was an unhappy afternoon for some of their top-flight rivals.

Millwall produced the shock of the day to beat Bournemouth 3-0 at The Den.

Steve Morison, Shaun Cummings and Shane Ferguson scored for the League One side as Cherries boss Eddie Howe paid the price for making 11 changes from the side which had held Arsenal in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Stoke were beaten 2-0 at home by Wolves - Helder Costa and Matt Doherty on target - while another Championship side claimed a Premier league scalp as Derby won 2-1 at West Brom, Darren Bent and Tom Ince overturning Matt Phillips’ first-half goal.

Lincoln were within four minutes of shocking Championship side Ipswich, but the National League side had to settle for a replay as Tom Lawrence matched Theo Robinson’s double in a 2-2 draw.

Everton were knocked out 2-1 by Leicester after Romelu Lukaku had scored his seventh goal in as many FA Cup ties.

Ahmed Musa quickly levelled Lukaku’s opener before the Foxes substitute grabbed a 71st-minute winner to avenge their Premier League defeat to Everton on Boxing Day.

Elsewhere, League One Oxford won 3-2 at Rotherham where Ryan Taylor, Phil Edwards and Kane Hemmings scored after Chris Maguire had seen his spot-kick saved.

Danny Ward and Tom Adeyemi gave the Millers hope, but it was another sad day for the Championship’s bottom club.

There was to be no giant-killing for non-league trio Barrow, Eastleigh and Stourbridge.

Barrow’s hopes of making the fourth round for the first time were ended by Ian Henderson’s brace in a 2-0 away win for Rochdale.

Eastleigh, also of the National League, were thrashed 5-1 at Brentford as former Bees boss Martin Allen suffered a miserable return to Griffin Park.

Tom Field (two), Yoann Barbet (penalty), Lasse Vibe and Romaine Sawyers all scored before half-time, with Ayo Obileye replying for Eastleigh.

Stourbridge, the lowest ranked side left in the competition, lost 2-1 at League Two Wycombe.

Dan Scarr cancelled out Sam Wood’s opener 20 minutes from time, but the Northern Premier League side were left heartbroken by Adebayo Akinfenwa’s late winner.

Meanwhile, Hull’s Marco Silva won the battle of the new bosses as fellow Premier League strugglers Swansea lost 2-0 on Humberside.

Paul Clement’s Swansea were on course for a replay until Abel Hernandez and Josh Tymon scored for the Tigers in the final 12 minutes.

Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace must replay as his former club Bolton held last season’s finalists to a goalless draw at the Macron Stadium.

Southampton and Norwich must also play again after a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road.

Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida twice put the Saints ahead, but Steven Whittaker (pen) and Steven Naismith, in the final minute, saved Norwich.

There will be further replays between Sunderland and Burnley, Bristol City versus Fleetwood, and Blackpool against Barnsley after goalless draws.

Watford beat Burton 2-0 with goals in each half from Christian Kabasele and Jerome Sinclair.

Gianfranco Zola is still looking for his first win as Birmingham boss after a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle.

Daryl Murphy gave Newcastle a fifth-minute lead but Lukas Jutkiewicz equalised just before the break.

Israel internationals Beram Kayal and Tomer Hemed were on the scoresheet as Brighton beat MK Dons 2-0, while fellow Championship high-flyers Huddersfield overcame Port Vale 4-0 with Jack Payne (two), Kasey Palmer and Harry Bunn netting.

A Joel Lynch own goal and a Liam Feeney strike saw Blackburn through 2-1 at QPR, Jake Bidwell claiming a consolation from the penalty spot.

Wigan won another all-Championship affair as Will Grigg and Yanic Wildschut scored in a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Accrington saw off fellow League Two side Luton 2-1, Omar Beckles grabbing the winner after Jake Gray had cancelled out Sean McConville’s efffort.

In the late game, Arsene Wenger preserved his record of never having lost an FA Cup third-round tie as Arsenal survived an early scare at Preston.

Callum Robinson put Preston ahead after seven minutes when the ball ricocheted into his path off Jordan Hugill’s shin but second-half goals from Aaron Ramsey - his first of an injury-hit season - and Olivier Giroud gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory over their spirited Championship opponents.

Sunday’s action sees Liverpool host Plymouth, Chelsea welcome Peterborough and Aston Villa travel to Tottenham, with Middlesbrough also facing Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff up against Fulham.
