West Brom v Southampton preview: Manolo Gabbiadini among doubts

Show/hide article…

Southampton could be without several key players for their Premier League trip to West Brom on Saturday.

Midfielder Steven Davis suffered an ankle injury in the 3-1 midweek win against Crystal Palace and is a doubt along with striker Manolo Gabbiadini, midfielder Sofiane Boufal and defender Ryan Bertrand.

Saints are also without Oriol Romeu due to a two-game suspension for earning 10 yellow cards.

“It’s difficult to prepare for this game, but the result against Palace can give us good confidence,” said Saints manager Claude Puel.

The win over Palace moved Saints up to ninth in the table, seven points behind eighth-placed West Brom but with two games in hand.

Following a 2-0 defeat at Watford in midweek, the Baggies have won only one of their last five Premier League matches.

“The team deserves a lot of credit for what they’ve done this year,” said manager Tony Pulis. “We are pushing them for more though still. On our day we can give anyone a game. If we aren’t on our game then we fall a little short. That’s the level that we are at.”

West Brom could have a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Matt Phillips is in contention to start after making his return from injury as a substitute against Watford.

While several Saints players face late fitness tests, the visitors are definitely without defenders Matt Targett and Virgil van Dijk, goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and striker Charlie Austin.

West Brom have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League games against Southampton.

Saints have only once before lost both Premier League games against the Baggies in the same season (2012/13).

Saints have only scored once in the Premier League at the Hawthorns - a 90th minute penalty converted by Rickie Lambert in August 2013 to win 1-0.

West Brom have won 29 points from their 15 home games this season; their joint-best return at this stage of a Premier League season alongside 2012/13.

Indeed, the Baggies have won eight and lost two of their last 10 Premier League matches at The Hawthorns.

Tony Pulis’ side have scored 27 goals at home this campaign; only in 2012/13 (32) and 2010/11 (30) have West Brom netted more at The Hawthorns in a Premier League season.

The Baggies’ next home defeat will be their 600th in league football. Only one side has lost 600+ home games within the top four tiers of English league football since 1888 and that is Notts County (633).

Southampton are another strange side. I thought Bournemouth should have beaten them, then they went and beat Palace in midweek.

West Brom had a bad result at Watford and they’ve been up and down lately. But they’ve had a good season and they won’t want it to fizzle out. I think they’ll get back on track here.

Southampton are marginally Sky Bet’s favourites at 6/4 with West Brom 19/10 for a 10th home win of the season, while the draw is priced at 11/5.

Both sides are well odds-on for top-half finishes, with the Saints 6/4 to end up above their hosts. Shane Long heads a wide open first goalscorer market at 5/1, with Salomon Rondon still considered the Baggies’ main threat at 11/2 to net first despite his goal drought.

West Brom v Southampton is included in this weekend’s Super 6 line-up, with £250,000 up for grabs for simply predicting the six correct scores. Enter your selections here.

Butterfield: We must build on last week

Show/hide article…

The youngsters travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Under-18 Premier League, and Butterfield is keen to see his men push on between now and the end of the season.

“Again it’s an opposition that we haven’t come up against,” he started.

“So it will be similar to last week against Newcastle, and that’s a performance that we will certainly be hoping to build on.

“We felt that the boys reacted well after the Leicester defeat the week before and now it’s about replicating that Newcastle display to keep pushing their development.”

Despite creating a number of chances against Newcastle at Staplewood, Saints were unable to find a winner and had to make do with a 2-2 draw.

And although pleased with the performance, Butterfield knows his players will now want to get back to winning ways.

“The ultimate aim for us is to create a development path,” he continued.

“But I think the boys will want to put the last two games right on Saturday, especially after creating so many chances against Newcastle.

“That said, we also have to concentrate and make sure we are doing the right things at the other end – across the back four and through the midfield.”

Davis a doubt for West Brom

Show/hide article…

The midfielder picked up a knock during the second half of Wednesday night’s victory, and will be assessed over the next two days, ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit to the Hawthorns.

Puel, who is already without Oriol Romeu, as he begins a two-match suspension, said: "We don’t know the situation of the injury of Davis and we will see all this with calm.

"It’s an injury to his ankle and we will see with the doctor if he can participate.

"For the other players we will see. I have no more news on Gabbiadini and we will see also if we can take him in the squad or not.

“We have a training session this afternoon and we will see how the players are.”

Premier League predictions: Who’ll finish second, and who’s going down?

Show/hide article…

While Chelsea are on course to win this season’s Premier League title, there is plenty of uncertainty further down the table.

We asked our reporters to how the top six will finish and who will be relegated to the Championship. Here’s how they answered:

Chelsea’s title wobble proved to be nothing more than a minor tremor and Antonio Conte will comfortably secure the Premier League title next month. Spurs will atone for last season’s surprise collapse by finishing second, with the game against Arsenal on April 30 certain to be pivotal as they look to ensure Arsene Wenger is a speck in their rear view mirrors.

Manchester City should benefit from a fortutious fixture list - they only play United in the current top eight - while Liverpool will pay the price for their inability to raising their game against lesser opposition.

Sunderland have been heading to the Championship since the Christmas decorations were put away and maybe it will be a mercy killing. Middlesbrough do not score enough goals and 13 games without a win has come at the worst possible time.

Hull City have been dramatically improved under Marco Silva but away games at Manchester City, Stoke, Southampton and Crystal Palace could have a huge effect on their hopes of survival.

Opposition View: West Bromwich Albion

Show/hide article…

Saints head into the game on the back of a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace looking to put pressure on the Baggies, who sit one place above them in 8th.

And Pulis knows his side must be at their best if they are to record victory over a side he holds in high regard.

“Southampton are a fantastic model for the Premier League. They bring a lot of players through and their recruitment has been brilliant.” Pulis.

“They are a top 10 team with some brilliant players and it will be a tough game for us.

“On our day we can give anyone a game. If we aren’t on our game then we fall a little short. That’s the level we’re at.

“The team deserves a lot of credit for they’ve done so far this season, but we’re still pushing them for more.

“Our home form has been pretty good this year. It’s important for us to put in a performance and hopefully we can get a good result.”

Transfer news: One player each Premier League club should cash in on and replace in the summer window

Show/hide article…

There’s little room for sentiment in football.

It’s a ruthless business, as we will no doubt again be reminded of in the summer transfer window.

Along with the prospect of new arrivals being welcomed into a team when the market opens in a few months’ time, there’s also the issue of who could be heading out of their current club to free up funds and make room for signings.

With this in mind, we’ve taken a look at the one player each Premier League club should considering cashing in on and replacing at the end of the season.

Scroll through the gallery above to check out who has been chosen for your side.

Saints legend Rickie Lambert finding life tough at Cardiff

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Rickie Lambert is facing an uncertain future at Cardiff City.

Lambert has only featured in three games since the turn of the year, and none at all since February 11.

Today Cardiff boss Neil Warnock revealed Lambert is fully fit but he has not been good enough to warrant a regular place in his squad.

The former England international has struggled with a back problem, and Warnock said: "He is training but at the moment I don’t think he’s happy with his fitness.

"He’s going to be training hard and trying to get back into the squad really.

"He’s fully fit so it’s not a matter of him not being fit now.

“It’s just a case of, is he better than some of the others in the squad now, and I’ve felt not.”

Lambert earned legendary status at St Mary’s after plundering 106 league goals in 208 appearances for Saints between August 2009 and May 2014.

But since joining boyhood idols Liverpool for £4m, his career has stagnated.

Now 35, Lambert has only scored seven league goals since leaving Saints - two for Liverpool in 2014/15, one for West Brom in 2015/16 and four for Cardiff this term - in 25 starts plus 36 sub appearances.

Jose Fonte to be dragged into a relegation fight?

Show/hide article…

He obviously didn’t mean the 2017/18 Championship title.

Yet the second tier of English football is where Fonte could be heading if the Hammers don’t buck their worrying Premier League form.

They have failed to win in seven games since a 3-1 success at St Mary’s on February 4 - and Wednesday’s 3-0 loss at Arsenal was their fifth defeat in a row.

That win at Saints over two months ago is, ironically, the only time Fonte has tasted success in his nine league games since his £8m departure from the south coast.

In those nine games - featuring not a single clean sheet - the Hammers have shipped 21 goals.

They have let in 14 in their last six - the worst record of any Premier League club in that timeframe.

Now today’s home game with Swansea is absolutely massive.

Should the Swans win at the London Stadium, Fonte and co could be just three points off the drop zone - and that’s providing Hull don’t pick up any points at Manchester City.

That’s a far cry from January, when Fonte said after joining the Hammers: "With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight.

“I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies."

Could those words come back to haunt him?

After today’s clash with Swansea, West Ham head to Sunderland - who haven’t scored in their last six league games - next week.

Slaven Bilic’s men still have Everton, Tottenham and Liverpool to face at the London Stadum too.
